take your pills

I got a nice little package in the mail a few weeks ago, an advance copy of the album dropping from newborn collaboration between Zach Hill (yes, ANOTHER project) and Zac Nelson (Hexlove, Trawler Bycatch): Chll Pll.  Their first album, Agressively Humble, is due out October 20. Familiar with Zach Hill, I had my doubts as to whether it could actually sound much different from other projects, just due to the sheer number of them. Apparently he left some ground uncovered, which Chll Pll seems to fill in nicely- still driving and drum heavy, but with a synthy edge that sort of, well, uplifts you. Interesting.

Chll Pll – Dick Moves

I had the opportunity to talk to Zac Nelson about the birth of Chll Pll:

FMLY: So it seems like Chll Pll is pretty new.

Zac: Yes, very new.

F: When did it start?

Z: I’d say 8 months ago maybe. We went and recorded and then I came back up to Portland and it took a few months for everything to get completed, and then a few more months for everything to get manufactured, so I’d say about half a year.

F: So how did you and Zach Hill meet and start collaborating?

We’ve already told ya how we feel about Zach Hill’s place in Wavves, but after this video just imagine Ice Cube and Chris Tucker going “DAYYYUUUUUMMMMM!

“Hula Hoop” vents the frustration that Nathan has had since hitting it hip but it’s Zach that captures every anger, betrayal and ‘fuck this’ that Nathan can’t express on his own. Terror Eyes hit up the church studio (Grizzly Bear style) to bring us this vid, and here’s Nathan’s two cents:

This is a rough live mix from how the song will be when it’s finished but once it’s done the track WILL be on the next record. Lyrically/Sonically the song will be pretty different but jam on it.

Sounds like San Diego ’00s / LA ’80s / NY ’70s to me, all the better. My only concern is that every Wavves tune seems to get better than the last and that’s what’s being loved so hard right now, luckily with Zach on drums there’s no worry about plateauing.

Wavves – Cool Jumper

hella chll pllz

We blogged on Zach Hill’s presence in Wavves yesterday, so today we’re yappin’ about CHLL PLL; vowel-less experimental pioneers aka the LWS&CLRK of ND MZK aka Zach Hill and Zac Nelson from Hexlove aka Zac(h) ATTACK!! For the folks out there that have never experienced the touch of a man, take in some “Dick Moves.” Doctors rec’d.

zach hill joins wavves

What. What? What! Zach Hill has joined Wavves. Zach Hill has joined Wavves. I’m going to say it one more time because I still don’t really get it…Zach Hill has joined Wavves.

Zach Hill of Hella, CHLL PLL, Team Sleep, The Ladies, and countless other marks on the independent music community has joined Wavves full-time which is a bit odd considering his musical experience vs Nathan’s. “Cool Jumper” already sounds like Wavves is a Zach-fronted band as laced by the recognizable ‘Hilltronics’ and a more than catchy percussive pattern. Now I’m not complaining at all because Wavves rawks and Zach Hill is a hero, but maybe now that Pitchfork has acknowledged FMLY we could get Panda Bear to blog for us. Fuck, this song is hot. Album already?

What A Week, NYC

As if seeing Little Joy at The Virgin Store and then Zomes, Fursaxa and Brightblack Morning Light (all of whom rocked my world) at Le Poisson Rouge tonight wasn’t enough; this is one fucking great week for live music! Tomorrow, well I guess tonight, you can catch Zach Hill (Hella/Marnie Stern/Team Sleep/The Ladies), Subtle and recent FMLY favs Pattern Is Movement at The Knitting Factory. If you’re already planning on going and want to know about the mentioned ‘Peer Pressure’ is that is listed to play with Zach, you may want to read his explanation.

“HELLO ! TO THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN INQUIRING ABOUT WHAT AND WHO “PEER PRESSURE” MAY BE IT’S ACTUALLY MY DRUM SET! HAHA THATS STRAIGHT TALK! IN THE FUTURE THIS MONIKER WILL MOST LIKELY DEFINE A COLLECTIVE OF HUMAN BEINGS PLAYING SONGS AND MY DRUM SET, BUT FOR THIS TOUR ITS A METAPHOR FOR THE DRUMS AND THATS ABOUT ALL I’M BRINGING AND ALL IM PLAYING. TO MAKE IT CLEAR SO THERES NO CONFUSION ABOUT MY UPCOMING PERFORMANCES I AM PERFORMING A 45 MINUTE NON STOP HEAVILY IMPROVISED RENDITION OF THE TRACK “NECROMANCER” OFF OF MY NEWEST SOLO RELEASE. THIS WILL BE ME ON DRUMS AND THE LAPTOP ON LAPTOP OR THE IPOD ON IPOD. I PLAN ON PERFORMING THE MORE SONG ORIENTED MATERIAL OFF THE ALBUM WITH A FULL BAND IN THE THE FUTURE BUT FOR MANY REASONS IT WAS UNREALISTIC AT THIS JUNCTURE. SO THIS IS HOW I WILL BE EXPRESSING MYSELF IN THE NOW ASIDE FROM THE SHOWS WERE ITS NOTED THAT I’LL HAVE SOMEONE AWESOME SITTING IN WITH ME!” [zach hill]

Tomorrow night’s awesome guest chillin’ with Zach on stage will be Marco Benevento who is a brilliant keyboardist whether you want to hear some circuit bending, post-jazz or anything in between. If not for the already guaranteed night of incredible music, come to say bye to Subtle as the collective have announced that they’re going on hiatus from this project.

For further anticon happenings, the collective has just released the flyer for their Third Annual Ten Year Anniversary. This year’s party will bring you Themselves (doseone & jel), Yoni Wolf aka Why?, Odd Nosdam + Jel, Sole, Alias, Buck 65, pedestrian + DJ Thanksgiving Brown. This incredible night is December 18 at The Knitting Factory and you can buy tickets here.

On Thursday PopGun Booking has a great event at Glasslands. DJ Kid Color will be on deck with music supplied by Anamanaguchi, The French Horn Rebellion and Savoir Adore.

Friday brings us the best way to end the week – Stars of the Lid, Hammock and Jocelyn Bonadio at Le Poisson Rouge. Purchase tickets here.

If you’re in the mood for a much cheaper week then you can see Peter & the Wolf multiple times. Tonight Red will be at The Studio at Webster Hall, Wednesday he’ll be at Union Hall and Saturday he’ll be at The Silent Barn. Chances are he’ll be playing house parties in Brooklyn each night which will lead into next week perfectly with a Brooklyn house show by none other than Pat the Bunny aka Wingnut Dishwasher’s Union. Head over to the Peter and the Wolf MySpace for ALL NEW MUSIC from his new record including a completely redone version of “Safe Travels.” You can also purchase the record [pictured above] once you’re there.

MoveOn.org is being gracious and giving away Shepard Fairey designed Obama victory stickers [pictured above]. Head over here and get yours.

Now I couldn’t send you off to bed or work or school without some jammin’ tunes to listen to for the day so here’s a little somthing special. Odd Nosdam recently posted some beats to download for free, he made them 2002-2003 and has attached the title CIRCUS faux PREZ beats!. He also posted a sweet mixtape, get ‘em both below.

CMJ Week At A Glance

[goodbye blue monday, see you soon]

Thanks to all who came out for FMLY’s Breakfast of Champions. It was a beautiful day with some beautiful people and big ups to Itaru from Rumspringa for getting out of jail on time to play the show! We opened with Savoir Adore who rocked the performance art space in the back of Goodbye Blue Monday. Up next DD/MM/YYYY got everyones blood pumping with one of the most high energy sets I have seen all week. Nick Jozwiak took that vibe and created an improvisational set of loops, distortion and some of the most beautiful vibrations that have ever penetrated my ears. After Nick I performed a new set, my 30 minute Ninjasonik “Art School Girls” remix, filled with some Super Mash Bros, DJDT and the largest joint circle on this side of the calendar. Stay tuned for the “Art School Girls” video release party that I’ll be playing at. After that the night took a small break to welcome DJ Teenwolf of Ninjasonik spinning some exclusive unheard tracks that he has been working on with Blaqstarr. The Hood Internet took to the decks blasting classics for the party animals in the house. Rumspringa went on shortly after and rocked a full house of fans to their knees. I definitely learned that drinking straight Tequila on stage is badass, the fans love it and that you should ALWAYS share. The night ended with Ninjasonik who played to a crowd of first timers and in the chaos of “Tight Pants,” Cameron in an Obama mask and a surprise collaboration of Ninjasonik and Rumspringa (watch out Youtube!), FMLY’s B of C proved to NY that we can take on CMJ week…bring it SXSW!

We have plenty of surprises in store for the future including our just announced show at the Knitting Factory on November 29 with Subtle (anticon) and Zach Hill (of Hella). Subtle’s ExitingARM is a fucking fantastic album that should be on everyones shelf alongside Zach’s Astrological Straits. Both of these artists push the boundaries of their respective genres and if you haven’t seen Zach Hill yet…well you’re in for a surprise. If you were in NY this week then hopefully you caught Zach playing drums for Marnie Stern, and speaking of Marnie I insist on picking up her latest release, This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That (Kill Rock Stars) – album title inspired by Alan Watts.

In addition to November 29 FMLY is also working on a winter celebration at the Echoplex. Get ready for Snowdayz In LA (I prefer Snowdaze) featuring Daedelus, Busdriver, The Mae Shi, Rumspringa, Fool’s Gold and more to be announced.

As T.I. says, there are “Big Things Poppin’” and we couldn’t be more excited to share our favorite bands with you. We were even mentioned on the top 40 charts! If you’d like to help out and become an integral role in the FMLY we are looking for inspired writers, iMovie editors and someone who enjoys photography or videocameras to capture the live magic of these performances. If this sounds like something you would be into then please send an email to noah@thefmly.com or cameron@thefmly.com with a sample of your writing, photography or video skills. Thanks everyone, we couldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for your support.
