It’s become somewhat of a cliche in these times to try and be unique, to a point where everyone that deviates from anything considered normal is a ‘Hipster’ and anybody claiming not to be is still labeled as one. But nothing is normal and nothing is unique… Anymore (or was it ever?).

pining for a party

After FMLY PRSNTS: BWR TH NVSN w/ Anamanaguchi, TRS-80, NEON NAVAJO and Professor Calculator there may or may not be a caravan heading north to Big Sur. The cause: Mexican Summer’s Party In The Pines with Gang Gang Dance, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Dungen, Woods, Kurt Vile, Vietnam and the list goes on a bit longer. Seriously, what the fuck. This sounds like the best party ever. Mexican Summer rocks. More info here.

We are so f’ing excited for FYF Fest. The annual festival will be helping out state parks this year since our government won’t. More over, you can get there for free!

First of all, if you don’t live in LA, you have the chance to win:

2 Nights at a nice hotel.
4 VIP passes
4 tickets to see the pride and joy of our city, the Dodgers on Sunday, September 6th.

All submissions should be sent to FYFcontests@gmail.com and include your full name, phone number and address. The winner will be picked on Friday, August 28th. Runners up will receive VIP tickets to the festival. Doesn’t matter where you live or your age. This contest is open to all.

The second contest includes saving our state parks. Even if you don’t decide to enter this, you should still take part because it is very important. Isn’t that what this is all about anyway?

“On July 28, the Governor signed the state budget.  It contained an additional $6M cut to state parks, bringing the total General Fund cut for this budget year to $14.2M. It is expected that this will result in the closure of more than 100 state parks.

This contest is in conjunction with the California State Parks Foundation and is about contacting your legislative representatives and the Governor to let them know how much California’s state parks mean to you. We are putting together some amazing prizes for those who draft and submit the best stories of their time spent at any of the 279 state parks across California. The grand prize winner will receive a gift bag consisting of records and CDs by the artists performing at the event, a huge care package including backpacks, watches, magazine subscriptions etc. And four VIP passes for the festival. 10 Runner ups will receive passes to the festival.

This is how you do it:

1) Click this link to get to the take action center on the California State Park Foundation’s website: http://ga3.org/campaign/budget072909
3)  Submit the letter
3) Forward the response letter that automatically gets sent to you to FYFCONTEST@GMAIL.COM and you are automatically entered in the contest.
4) For an extra special prize customize the letter and talk about the most fun you have ever had at a state park and send it with your entry letter.

The winners will be announced on Friday, Aug. 21st. So submit your memories and tell your Representatives to KEEP OUR STATE PARKS open.

We need to act now as the list of over 100 State slated for closure will be announced after September 1st!”

welcome to woods

The fog is dense, mostly along the tips of the grass which tickle your ankles. Socks do no justice and shoes will only encourage the fury, travel insists on the bare. Echoes sprout like pine and meet death like cones, questionable but please don’t ask. Woods persist in spite, in loyalty, in morality. Rising from the density, making clarity of the echoes. Through headphone, through megaphone, through market, and through hotel. Death Rattle. Twisted Tongue. Military Madness. In the distance you have room.

Wavves of Adulation

After a slew of 7″ releases (notably Beach Demon / Weed Demon) the time has come for San Diego’s Nathaniel Williams, aka Wavves, to go the way of the LP. Serving bedroom-produced helpings of crusty beach pop on his sophomore album Wavvves (De Stijl Records) due out February third, you can’t help but want to hit the ocean…even in these sub-twenty February days. Before you throw on your North Face swim gear, lets recap: Wavves (two v’s) is releasing Wavvves (three v’s), the follow up to last year’s self-titled debut Wavves (two again). Got it?

There is never a moment of clarity in this nearly 30-minute intimate jam, but Williams offers plenty of vivid moments. “No Hope Kids” calls upon catchy falsetto-vocal hooks fusing characteristics of The Beach Boys to the more contemporary noise-driven sounds of Los Angeles’ No Age while “So Bored” offers childhood reminiscence in a familiar way that will surely make its way onto playlists and mixtapes all year, “Those feet were tired, as my hands get bored, went jeans to shorts, I’ll do no chores, I’m so bored.”

Wavvves, calls into question the future of rock ‘n’ roll: Will the evolving sounds of today’s youth pull towards the vintage appeal of Pet Sounds, or stray towards the experimental whether it be dosed with Animal Collective or Deerhunter. While many tracks are undoubtedly meant for those sunny beach-crunk-and-a-blunt days, others are purely distorted for distortion’s sake (“Killr Punx, Scary Demons”). As Impose Magazine’s Blake Gillespie so delicately put it, “every track pushing into the red is never going to save rock ‘n’ roll.” Williams has the attention of the blogosphere on his shoulders and with the start of his first US and European tour there is no bigger question on everyone’s mind than if Wavves can live up to his tidal buzz in 2009, or only leave a ripple.

I caught Wavves yesterday at the Underground Lounge with Woods for Barnard’s day of music and must say that after speaking to Williams and seeing him play, I am not only impressed by his talent but his character. He should be landing in Ireland in the next few hours to begin his European tour, I wish him the best and if you have the chance I urge you to catch him live. The music becomes much cleaner, upbeat and offers more sound variability than his albums do. It’s like watching vinyl come to life.
