a clearer mind

Pat Vamos has the midas touch and it’s very much appreciated when it ripples on over to our side of the pond. Taking Swimming In Speakers‘ adorably crafted “Serve Them Well” and pairing their sweet tooth for pop aesthetic with some lip-smacking “Apocalyptic inline skating fun in the tradition of Solarbabies, Prayer of the Rollerboys and those fucking scary things in Return to Oz,” aka rad shit that was probably in a public domain archive, we finally have the chance to experience one of our favorite bands in a whole new sense. So excited about this video, FMLY x SiS = BFFs4lyf3! Swimming In Speakers play their first show ever on September 26 at the Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn with Pet Ghost Project (flyer here)!

With Alopecia came a slew of promo videos telling the story of a few stalkers and their quest to make it Yoni, so with Eskimo Snow just six days away from release it’s about time we get some visual stimulation from our boys in the Bay! Directed by Andre Hyland, Blond Chili and Why? this first of a ten-part series introduces the public to Why?’s new manager – for your own sake do not look too closely. Shout out to Shaun!

Why? is hitting the road in just over a week. Tour dates after the jump.

why goes to paris

Folk-lore hip hop lovers Why? recently played at the Colors Music Estival in Paris and our buds at Grandcrew.com caught their whole set! You can move through from song to song too. Why? will be releasing their new album Eskimo Snow on September 22.

not feeling patriotic makes you really not wanna learn, pack up little gram bags like you’ll never have a turn

Whether they realize it or not, Serengeti & Polyphonic’s “My Patriotism” may be one of the most truthful songs to college students I’ve heard in some time. Who are we, what can we do, and how can we ever begin to apply our growing existence towards a larger picture? With anticon. label-mate Why? lending a hand to the remix, a rather obscure tune with great plucked strings, an accordion and plenty of other fun sounds has now developed a space left for the listener to fill with their presence, a gap to experience the speech between flows and beats. This piece can certainly draw comparison to the Boards of Canada remix of Why?’s “Good Friday” in terms of its spaciousness, but isn’t intended to reach those tribal-funk grooves.

dig your week

Yeah, we love Why?, yeah, we love Black Moth Super Rainbow, and yeah, we love Broken Social Scene. The only thing that would really make this week a bit more rad is if Animal Collective released a new live tune or remix. Black Moth Super Rainbow have exposed their Grindhouse vid for “Twin Of Myself.” If you caught the group live (or will be in the near future) then you’ll recognize the latter half from their projected visuals. Peep that bloody mess above. Remember when we interviewed Tobacco?

P4k is all over Yoni’s crotch, and I don’t know how I feel about it. I guess they’re building him up to be one of the great voices of our generation and I think the entire act is a bit conceited on their part. That’s not going to stop us from loving to fuck out of Why?, cLOUDDEAD, or Hymie’s Basement and it’s certainly not going to keep us from posting this gorgeous new Why? track, “This Blackest Purse.” More melodies, crooning and mustache fetishism, less getting pussy from disinterested bitches. I’m calling Eskimo Snow as album of the year right now…it’d certainly be appropriate as Alopecia was our number one from ‘08. Also, be careful when googling images for Yoni Wolf as the world’s ugliest vaginas can and will appear in ways you’d never want to see them. Remember when we interviewed Why??

In other news, the Broken Social Scene we know, love and miss with Emily (Metric), Leslie (Feist), Amy (Stars), Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning and the rest of the gang reunited in Toronto on Saturday. Here are Youtube videos for you to kill the rest of your day with. Welcome back homies. Saturday’s live video of “Almost Crimes” after the jump.

eskimo snow

Title track off of the new album played during a Yoni Wolf solo set, everything he plays on a Rhodes is just captivating. There’s also a great takeaway session and more on Youtube and live tapes here and there if you don’t feel like waiting around until September.

anticon. propaganda

from the desk of anticon:

In conjunction with Dublab’s Matthewdavid, Anticon’s Shaun Koplow (sodapop) hosts a free 21+ weekly music night on Fridays at the Hyperion Tavern in L.A., from 10 until 2 a.m. Two weeks ago, “Calling All Kids” featured special DJ sets from Doseone, Jel, Thanksgiving Brown and Pedestrian. Last week, Thavius Beck dropped by, and THIS FRIDAY, Yoni Wolf of WHY? stops in.

In other WHY? news, the band has contributed a new song, “Eskimo Snow (sock hop version),” to a limited CD/LP compilation benefiting Sudanese refugees. Tiny Mix Tapes Vol. 1: Darfur, released by the webzine of the same name, also includes contributions by good folk like Mount Eerie, Jim O’Rourke, Dan Deacon and Xiu Xiu. Cop it here. Album art above.

Finally, half of the lineup for ATP’s annual UK fest, “The Fans Strike Back,” is decided by votes from ticket-holders. Well, this year’s request list is in and WHY? came in at number five just below Bonnie Prince Billy and TV On The Radio. The band was voted in last year, so this bodes well.

Canvas shoes and Ray-Bans.. It’s WHAT’S UP!!!

SXSW, live in the parking lot

Not like we have enough great stuff from Portland, OR (i.e. Menomena, the Decemberist, YACHT, etc.), I got the pleasure of coming across one of Obey Your Brain’s newer additions, What’s Up. At a first encounter in Austin’s SXSW, we got a little preview of this uncanny trio at an off-by thrift store show. There, they opened up for FMLY FRNDS dd/mm/yyyy and Reverse X-Rays plus more, but when they came on, Cameron and I got to groovin’. This is the experimental music that you so much need. It’s sort of the way you want to wake up in the morning and the way you want to live throughout the day. It keeps me up, like any upper cannot.

Being a short-lived band collectively (formed in early 2008), we see that they are already causing a riff in our music scene by joining a label alongside acts like WHY?, Dan Deacon, Dntel and more.  The way they perform is also a sight to be seen. The bassist remains sturdy at his bass, while both the drummer and guitarist pull out arms from nowhere to play their synths. This only adds the best of textures to the sound, performing not only as a “rock group, but also a production entity.”

Lucky for us all, they’ve got a record on the way to debut titled Content Imagination which is due out on May 19th of this year. And here’s your sneak peak to the album!

anticon. anniversary, cLOUDDEAD reunion

Last night was the celebration of a decade since the recording of the Deep Puddle Dynamics album that officially began anticon., and no one throws a better celebration than a group of close friends. From seven until midnight the respective collective-heads performed 25minute sets of music spanning their entire career; it was wild, it was nostalgic and when it ended some reaallyy thought that the night was over and left. As amazing as the beginning of the night was, nothing is comparable to what happened after a brief intermission. Now I’m a little shaky on my earlier anticon. days, but what we saw for an hour was the collaboration of every artist who performed that night. Deep Puddle Dynamics performed, minus slug, Greenthink may have done a little something, Alias dipped into his older catalog and Buck 65 just tore the night apart with another kickass set. This all was leading up to something very special which took a lot of audience encouragement, and that was the reunion of cLOUDDEAD. However, the reunion didn’t last forever and the nourishment a screaming audience was provided with were Ten gems, “The Teen Keen Skip” followed by “Dead Dogs Two.” As Odd Nosdam, Doseone and Why? Murder walked offstage there was applause, there was screaming and the woman standing next to me was in tears…this lasted for nearly 20minutes igniting the entire anticon. crew to come back onstage and freestyle to say goodbye. I have no doubt that Youtube videos will surface in the next week.

I also wanted to give some info on Yoni’s solo set takin’ it back to the old school Why? days. Armed with his Rhodes piano and a chorus of an audience Yoni played some sing-a-long songs off of Alopecia, then introduced us to what he has been working on for his next album and closed with…I honestly don’t remember, but it was early, it was beautiful and you all should have been there.

Just for some personal feedback, I love cLOUDDEAD an immeasurable amount and have no words to express what seeing them was like. All I have to offer is that if you were there last night, something very special happened. Stories behind the mysterious group was revealed such as how songs adapted their titles and how certain lyrics came to be. I just want to throw out a huge thank you to anticon., the Knitting Factory and all who attended last night. You all were great, and if you attended and are reading this – I was the asshole yelling for cLOUDDEAD at the end of Odd Nosdam’s set. You all laughed at me and said it wouldn’t happen but what now muthafuckas!
