Tactical Neon Tape Knows No Tethers + Trippy Photos!

Photos: Yours Truly (Forgive some blur, it ’twas my first time)

Dan Deacon likes to fuck with people; Dan Deacon likes to help people. The paradox lying in the previous statement might not carry weight anywhere else other than the psychosomatic world of sonic recreation that Deacon has on a leash. From one angle, the man toys with the crowd and has disregarded the contextual English language for the more fun phonetical fantasies, while from the other angle I’ve never witnessed such a communal experience – Deacon thrives on this, destroying all inhibitions and parting the sea of people like an electronic Moses – more on that later. On Wednesday April 22, the Troubadour hosted Baltimore natives Teeth Mountain, Future Islands, and Dan Deacon with his ensemble, giving the sold out crowd more than they could have ever hoped.

Premiere: Philip Seymour Hoffman Re-arranges Bromst

I just got this one in the mail from the mysterious Philip Seymour Hoffman and it really couldn’t have come at a more exciting time. By now I’m sure that most of you have picked up Dan Deacon’s Bromst and have probably either worn the vinyl out, scratched the CD from bringing it car to car or have burnt out your computer from too many repeated plays. Needless to say, the album is inspiring, captivating from start to finish and a beautiful display of what happens when you get together with your FRNDS. Wham City, FMLY has always been full of huge appreciators and we always will be.

Back to PSH, this anonymous character sent over an arrangement of four parts from three Dan Deacon tracks off of Bromst with added keyboards and vocals. The outcome isn’t necessarily a rework as we saw with PSH’s take on Meals for Children’s “Geebot,” but a new perspective on a fresh album that is worth checking out.

Philip Seymour Hoffman – B (up)
Bromst Sections
0:00 – “Snookered”
1:04 – “Of The Mountains” & “Snookered”
1:25 – “Red F”

Bonus
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Gee, bot? (reimagining Meals For Children)
Meals for Children – Geebot (live on FMLY Radio)

New Tobacco

I’m not talking about the new world flavors of Bali Shag, but NEW Tobacco to hold us over until the release of Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Eating Us in May.

Height, the hip-hop pseudonym for Dan Keech, worked with nine producers for his new album, Baltimore Highlands. The 12-track album was released in 12-inch vinyl record form this week on Wham City Records, and the CD release party is tomorrow at the Zodiac on Charles Street.

But the collaboration doesn’t end there. A dozen local and national indie musicians, including Video Hippos, Dan Deacon, Future Islands, Cex and Trey Told ‘Em, remixed tracks from Baltimore Highlands. Starting this week, the record label is releasing them two at a time for free download on its Web site.

Height toured around with Dan Deacon’s Round Robin extravaganza late last year and has become Wham City’s darling. The remix certainly takes on its own context in a way that Tobacco did for Laura Burhenn’s “Just For The Night” which can be found on BMSR’s Drippers. If this means that Tobacco is going to continue on a hip-hop path, I have great hope for the future. Enough with my early morning words, the tunes speak for themselves.

Anamanaguchi Make Pitchfork

FMLY FRNDS Anamanaguchi made Pitchfork last week, which may not seem like a big deal…but it is. Ours boys are now the third chiptune artist(s) to make P4k, the first being Crystal Castles and the second being Wham City’s Adventure. A major public triumph for 8bitcollective, Normative and 8bitpeoples it’s pretty exciting to see Luke and Peter chillin’ on Pitchfork – despite my personal quarrels with the site. Check out the real deal and give the post more hits here.

New York, Pulsewave is February 28 at The Tank. THAT IS THIS WEEKEND. All info is here and in the flyer below. If you can’t make it there will be a record release party at The Studio at Webster Hall March 6. Dawn Metropolis out on iTunes, LP and CD March 3.
