surf’s up, beach dazed!

The events which transpired on Saturday were incredibly important to our development as a FMLY. All involved pushed to the limit and certainly over the edge, those who attended were fantastic and respectful guests, and the sounds that were shared thread so deeply into our understanding of community rhythm it is RIDIC! Endless thank yous go out to RipLee, ‘REALLY, very’, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Best Coast, Haim, [Post-foetus], DJDT, Pizza!, Evan Voytas, Busdriver, Voxtrot, and RJD2 – without your contributions towards our shared experiences the energy created Saturday could not have been accomplished.

A collage of unified movement was arranged by DJDT (pictured and video’d above), throwback sing-a-longs were dished out by Voxtrot’s lack of a keyboard leaving them no choice but to hit up the early EPs, and with [Post-foetus] came the attention and silence of a night for no waves can command more entrancement of an audience than Will Weisenfeld’s imagination…and more than a few jokes about how shit sucks dick.

My inability to stop moving left me catching bits and pieces of the day, but my high point was certainly watching Evan Votyas manage his cassettes directly in the sun followed by Best Coast regulating the sweet summer vibes indoors. Big ups to the Ice Cream Man for capturing so many hearty faces, Noah Diamond for recording the most epic DJDT video, and every supporter of Saturday.

We’ll be posting more photos and video as they appear, but for the moment here is a quick visual recap of Beach Dazed. Thanks for the awesome experience. For more photos and probably some of you and your pals, please refer to the Ice Cream Man, No Electro and King Diamond Kid.

beach dazed tickets on sale now

Big ups to Alex Ito for this first edition of the Beach Dazed flyer. We’ve known Alex for about five years now and come August he’ll be joining me in New York while attending Pratt. And as you can see our FMLY baby is growing up, next thing you know it may be traversing space.

Tickets for Beach Dazed are on sale as of today! They are currently $25, but the price will be raised as we approach July 18 so purchase them now. For every ticket bought a tree is planted, and these tickets are also made from hemp. We have some pretty sweet special guests to be announced and a secret headliner that I’m so fucking pumped to see – I’ve only caught a DJ set of his, and we all know that doesn’t do the man justice.

Beach Dazed is a twelve hour event taking place at Out of Asia on July 18. The Ice Cream Man will be stopping by with free ice cream and we’ll be partying it up all day with slip ‘n’ slides, water balloon fights, a pool, local artists, great food, ky wrestling (fingers crossed), and a ton more everything tba that is sure to make a splash in yo’ summer so don’t forget to rep your favorite swimwear!

Some FRNDS coming out for Beach Dazed include Voxtrot, Railcars, [Post-foetus], Pizza!, Haim, Alligators, an 8bit DJ set by Your Majesty and many others. Get your tickets here and RSVP here.

Voxtrot – The Start of Something
Railcars – There Is Ice; It Is Blue

voxtrot trots to los angeles

Voxtrot will be coming to Los Angeles on July 18 to play FMLY’s Beach Dazed along with some other homies that we adore. If you’re unfamiliar with Voxtrot the band has become a go-to name in the current Austin music scene and to critic acclaim is certainly a top popper on the indie charts.

On March 22 Voxtrotter Jared Van Fleet announced via Twitter that his days with the band are over, but we have given praise to his tough decision for this reason: when I spoke to Jared in 2007 regarding his solo project, Sparrow House, he noted that “Voxtrot has been my life for the past five months, so I haven’t had any time to make more of my own music.” We wish you the best Jared.

Being said, Voxtrot will appear at an Anamanaguchi show in NY for a DJ set on June 26 and then in LA for Beach Dazed on July 18.

Voxtrot – The Start of Something
Voxtrot – Fast Asleep
Sparrow House – When I Am Gone
Sparrow House – Foxes (Sighing Like A Furnace)
and some bootlegs and rarities you may not have…
Voxtrot – Heaven (Talking Heads cover live on KEXP)
Voxtrot vs Massive Attack – Massive Mothers
Voxtrot – Raised By Wolves (covered by The Oxford Blues Acapella Choir)

Belaire Tours

Remember Voxtrot? Apparently bassist Jason Chronis (top right) has been double-dipping into another band since ‘05, Belaire, and it looks as though the balancing act has paid off. Bringing their pop-infused electronic jams across the country, Belaire is on the verge of some serious blog love. If you’re in New York, go check out Belaire as they open for wordsmith Jeffrey Lewis at The Cake Shop. I don’t have any mp3’s to share, but please take a listen to Belaire’s MySpace and watch the music video – created by bandmember Danny Reisch’s little sister – for “You Really Got Me Goin’” below. If you like what you hear, check out friends of Belaire, Bear Claws, and enjoy their lighthearted minimalist folk music that Austin, Texas produces so well.
