where have all the vowels gone?

It’s rare when a band completely stops me in my tracks, and that’s exactly what BLK JKS have done. The South African quartet has definitely been shaking up the scene ever since they performed at SXSW earlier this year. Back in ‘07, they released a vinyl-only 10″ that caught Diplo’s attention while touring S. Africa. After a bunch of shows were arranged in the states, things have absolutely taken off for them. They’ve often been compared to TV on the Radio, and Vampire Weekend; but their heavy Afro-pop guitars, hints of jazz and ethnic African music makes their sound completely unforgettable.

Back in march, they released their 4-song debut called Mystery EP on Secretly Canadian, and it’s definitely turning heads. We always like to keep our ears open for new tunes from around the world, and BLK JKS are definitely a gem. Keep your eyes peeled for these dudes, because they’re making their way up and down the coasts this summer.

discovering discovery

I always dig tunes I can dance to when I’m doing well, anything, and Discovery definitely meets all qualifications it takes to make me wanna shake my booty. Wes Miles (Ra Ra Riot) and Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend) came together and threw down some sick tracks that make you want to dance and fall in like with someone just so you can put their songs on the mix tape you made for them. At the same time. Both bands are currently on tour, so if you get a chance to check any of those shows out, jump on it!

Discovery only has three available tracks, but are definitely legit. The track “Can You Discover?” was recorded by Wes and Rostam back in 2005 and then was later used by Ra Ra Riot and renamed the track “Can you Tell?”

Osaka Loop Line is currently racking up play count “points” in itunes as we speak. Hopefully future tracks are just as good, if not better than these.

MTVu Woodie Awards In Review

[Mark Hoppus of blink-182 and +44]

Between Lykke Li and Q-Tip performing “Can I Kick It,” Vampire Weekend and Chromeo jamming, one of the All-American Rejects grabbing me, yelling “smoke weed every day” at Paramore, saying waddup to Mikey from The Cool Kids and Kid Sister throwing me the heart with her hands I couldn’t tell you what the best part or the worst part of the Woodie awards were…well actually the worst part was All Time Low, now I know where they got their name. Spank Rock made an appearance again this year performing with Santogold as opposed to last year’s Spank Rock performance featuring Santogold. The night wasn’t filled with too many surprises, but was filled with lots of Paramore (yuck!), girls in love with the “scene” and too many unnattractive acts of PDA to count. I never know quite how to describe my time at the awards with its mixed audience and genres that I can’t agree nor disagree with, so I’ll leave it at this. You can’t rock it, but you can’t knock it. For an MTV event I guess you’ve gotta give props, I’m just glad that they let Spank Rock back in after the mayhem he caused last year. You can catch the show on November 19 and find out who won best Woodie, coughParamorecough.

Esau Mwamwaya Finishes Album With M.I.A., Vampire Weekend And Others

[Esau with Ezra of Vampire Weekend]

Malawi by-way-of London musician Esau Mwamwaya is certainly a name to pay attention to in 2008. Announced via a MySpace blog by Radioclit member Johan, the album that EVERYONE has been waiting for is complete, “hopefully a good lisence deal will be in place very soon and the madness can begin!!” The album features collaborations with Santogold, M.I.A. and Vampire Weekend just to name a few, I can’t wait to hear more as the album finds a release. If you’re in London or will be tomorrow, make sure to stop by the Notting Mill Arts Club to check out Radioclit and Esau Mwamwaya live.

What I love so much about Esau are his uplifting and inspiring interpretations of contemporary music. The tracks below feature Esau singing over the beats of Architecture In Helsinki’s “Heart It Races” and M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes.” Sporting one of the smoothest voices I’ve ever heard, it’s quite alright that I have no clue what he is saying.

Esau Mwamwaya – Kamphopo (Heart It Races)
Esau Mwamwaya – Tengazako (Paper Planes)

Austin City Limits

Between Austin City Limits and SXSW, I don’t know how Austin finds time to just chill and actually LISTEN to all of this music.

Red Band Weezer Album

["This is what Vampire Weekend is going to look like in 15 years." -P4k]

So as I countdown the days until one of my favorite bands in the world release their new CD, it is becoming more and more difficult to follow the hype around it. As you’ve heard, Weezer will release their long awaited (still no contest to Portishead) and now confirmed Red Album (Interscope) on June 17, just the week before my birthday. The photo above is the first press shot of Weezer taken in 2008.

Recap of the amazing music that has come or is to come in 2008:
My Bloody Valentine, The Teenagers, Vampire Weekend, The Dodos, Radiohead, Kate Nash, Animal Collective EP, Weezer, Portishead, Saul Williams, Throw Me The Statue, etc… What are more of your favorites?

Amazing music to come in 2009:
Daft Punk.

Fleet Foxes Rule

I feel that right now, Fleet Foxes are that big small band that Death Cab, Grizzly Bear or Vampire Weekend once were. Their sound is so strong and defined that I am just sitting here waiting for the moment that they appear on SNL or some other late night show. Fleet Foxes is a band of five from Seattle and are fitting signed to Sup Pop, once homage to Death Cab and Nirvana… unfortunately not at the same time. Give them a listen, it’ll be worth it in several months time when they’re on the cover of Spin and all of your friends commend you for catching them at the beginning of their megaton wave.
