a toast to your health

Listen up, boys and girls, and try not to wet your pants: HEALTH just dropped their new album Get Color yesterday, and you better move quick to get your hands on some of this.  Just when we thought they couldn’t get any better, they toss out this gem of an album that is less gritty electhrash and more trapped in a hot cave of psychadelic paranoia with your heartbeat reverberating about the walls, shards of diamond raining from the roof, and clockwork locusts buzzing just around your peripheral.  Now don’t you worry, they havn’t gone soft on us or anything; its still all madness and frenzy in there, just with a new enlightened perspective on things.  Check out when we interviewed them.

Are you sitting on the edge of your seat now?  Are you dying to see what the skinny-jean-vibrating, ear-drum-busting live experience is all about?  Well then lucky you, because they happen to be playing the Troubadour tonight; I would be there in a millisecond had my scholarly obligations not been so cruel as to prevent me from attending, but do me a favor and go melt your mind tonight, for my sake.

dinosaurs in love… 6/23 @ the troubadour

Dinosaur Jr. – Green Mind
Crystal Antlers – Vexation

There’s something about a love affair that’s beyond comprehension. A true love shows itself in such a blinding epiphany that it’s impossible to deny, yet equally difficult to define. The love can be in the form of emotional, physical, metaphorical, or a combination of the three.

After witnessing the love affair between three men and their instruments, my ears are still ringing with the unobstructed clarity that rattled through their canals; clarity in knowing, clarity in understanding, clarity in the form of virtuosity which can only be obtained when one person truly loves.

The love that emanated between J Mascis with his guitar, Lou Barlow with his bass, and Murph with his drums told a story which ran deep enough to loose even Henry Rollins (Whom attended and rocked out harder than the young kids crowd surfing). It was a story of sorrow, repulsion, and unanswered questions, caught between walls of guitars and finding solace in the comfort of adoring fans.

I had gotten to the Troubadour just as the opening band had gotten on, the band being Long Beach’s Crystal Antlers – I hadn’t inspected the bill besides knowing Dino Jr. so this caught me by surprise and added to the love. Safe to say the Antlers killed it, I was so enthralled by both acts that I myself didn’t get too many good pictures, thank god I met someone who did.

Tactical Neon Tape Knows No Tethers + Trippy Photos!

Photos: Yours Truly (Forgive some blur, it ’twas my first time)

Dan Deacon likes to fuck with people; Dan Deacon likes to help people. The paradox lying in the previous statement might not carry weight anywhere else other than the psychosomatic world of sonic recreation that Deacon has on a leash. From one angle, the man toys with the crowd and has disregarded the contextual English language for the more fun phonetical fantasies, while from the other angle I’ve never witnessed such a communal experience – Deacon thrives on this, destroying all inhibitions and parting the sea of people like an electronic Moses – more on that later. On Wednesday April 22, the Troubadour hosted Baltimore natives Teeth Mountain, Future Islands, and Dan Deacon with his ensemble, giving the sold out crowd more than they could have ever hoped.

Yes, the rumors you’ve heard were all true and ongoing. The Get Up Kids have reunited on tour to spread their commemorates of  their album, Something To Write Home About’s, 10th year anniversary. To capture the album’s full entirety, they will be playing the album from start to finish, exact-a-mundo-ly the way it was recorded. Indeed, I am a big long time fan of the pop-punk originators, and will be at this sold-out show taking place at the Troubadour tonight FOR SURE. Send your jealous thoughts to randy@thefmly.com.

Rumors have also been solidified that the group is RE-RELEASING this album on vinyl or with a DVD and photobook. How pleasuring…

Speaking of pleasuring, Los Angeles locals, Miniature Tigers, will be fingering and tickling our ears as the opener tonight. I mean, what more can I ask for out of a night? Except for the possibilty of ‘ronas & lime and quesadilla burgers to top it off.

OLÈ !!

The Morning Benders

Last week I saw the Morning Benders at the Troubadour and the Echo and was absolutely blown away. If you ever have the chance to see these guys live, do. They are definitely a band to look out for this year.
Anyway, here’s a little interview/live acoustic song from one of my favorite bands.
