You heard Bethany! Show at the Smell in LA tonight with Best Coast, Pearl Harbour, Harry Merry (in town from Holland) and Native Fauna whom I have nothing but good vibes for. If you have $5 and a night with no plans let this be a strongly recommended suggestion.

church live

Big news that I’m so pleased to announce. Church’s Song Force Crystal will see its proper release August 4 on a collaborative effort from Sohitek and Tender Loving Empire! As I’ve shared before, I caught Church at a birthday party in Brooklyn during their 28 state all-we-have-is-this-van tour and it was no less than epic. I’m talking if Grizzly Bear could get an analog dance party bumpin’ kind of epic. Like if there was a national holiday for bacon dogs kind of epic! Sorry vegans…

FMLY has hooked Church up with a party at the Smell on October 4 with our homie Railcars. Hit it up! More tour dates in seven states after the jump. And if anyone is in Portland Church is throwing a free album release party on August 2. Info right here.

War Paint and EXITMUSIC TONIGHT

Our very talented dark friends EXITMUSIC will be playing their last show in LA for a long while. If you are in New York, you can catch them at The Cake Shop on June 21. For those of you that don’t know them, listening to EXITMUSIC with your eyes closed is like breathing in a coldsweat nightmare that creeps through your soul.

EXITMUSIC – The Decline of the West

Timothy Rabbit at The Smell

As an alumni of Santa Monica High School, Timothy Rabbit is not only a pride of West LA, but a dear friend of the FMLY. Having played many of our first events back in the day, it’s been exciting to watch Tim transition from Los Angeles, to the Bay, to becoming comfortable with his sound and now playing bass as a part of The Morning Benders.

On April 4 Timothy Rabbit will hit up Downtown’s DIY darling, The Smell, for a night of “poption” (pop-action) with Franklin For Short, Enid The Dowl, Moses Campell, and an awesome surprise, Da Bears.

Tim records bedroom pop tunes concerning sweet feelings for friends, lovers and memories. If you’re the romantic or nostalgic type then try not to look Tim in the eyes when he plays, you may fall in love. Highly recommended for fans of Matty Pop Chart or The Histories.

The fbook event is here.

February’s Amazement

The Amazements bring soul to the art-rock party that will leave you floored. With catchy titles such as “Time Anus” and the rough, but very listenable cut of “Steel Mill,” I’m looking forward to hearing some higher quality recordings from these Los Angeles folk. The most clear comparison to draw would be a mix of tequila folk-rockers Rumspringa with the heart and soul of Bmore’s Ponytail…plus featuring art that looks like one of the Garbage Pail Kids only helps The Amazements enter the realm of ‘definitely worth checking out’ at The Smell or Pehrspace in the next month. “Steel Mill” video below.

Railcars and Nephews at The Smell

What! FMLY was on the Prefix site!? Nice! Anyways, I’m just gonna plug a show that should really speak for itself. Railcars (Aria C Jalali) is playing a show in LA at The Smell with our beloved Nephews. I’m not familiar with Knight Rider or Felt Drawings but I’m assuming that they are just as rad. If you’re in town and don’t make your way here then I will personally prevent you from buying the new Animal Collective. Face that reality!

Nephews – Dakota Fanning

If you’re down with this music, then I highly recommend Raccoo-oo-oon

Japanther, Back In CA and New Album

“i love you no matter where you spend the night. you can always come back to me, because i’m nothing and you are everything…”

So the new Japanther album, Tut Tut Now Shake Ya Butt, dropped last month via Tapes Records – also home to BARR. But the most exciting news regarding the release is the west coast tour following! You can catch Brooklyn’s finest tonight at UCSD and tomorrow at surprisesurprise, The Smell! If you’re in Fresno or Oakland they’re also coming your way so make sure to check out the MySpace page. Japanther and FMLY BFF’z Ninjasonik will be arriving in LA in just a couple of weeks, more info to come as that approaches.

Seriously, just come.

No Age Release Nouns

It’s 3:30am, I haven’t eaten and my computer screen is blacking out.
However, I felt compelled to inform the readers of FMLY that L.A. powerhouse group No Age has received a 9.2 from Pitchfork. This puts No Age along the likes of Radiohead and Jens Lekman.
For such a long time I’ve felt a camaraderie between myself and those who don No Age shirts whether it be at Coachella, a show, the street or in class. It will be a sad day to see that magic of the few, the proud and the many vanish.
If you haven’t caught onto the No Age wave then grab your board now before this beauty goes megaton… I’m talking Vampire Weekend status. Also, if you haven’t been to the infamous Smell venue in Downtown L.A., get to it now before it becomes legitimately American Apparel hip. Coincidentally the AA headquarters is just minutes away.

No Age – Eraser

Also out: Portishead’s Third, Animal Collective’s Water Curses EP and some other great music that I’m sure you’ve downloaded leaks of months ago. Who has heard the new Coldplay? Personally I’m more of an Usher fan.

No Age

No Age, not to be confused with No Kids, is one of my favorite bands emerging from the Los Angeles music scene along with Health and of course the FMLY and extended FMLY bands. If you’re part of the L.A. DIY/art scene you may also remember Randy Randall and Dean Spunt as 2/3 of the noise-band, Wives. No Age has been on tour with Liars for a bit now who were previously on tour with Interpol, so if you’re in Los Angeles make sure to catch them at the El Rey on the 22 because you’re definitely in for a great show and if you’ve ever caught them at The Smell then you know exactly what I’m talking about. After releasing five decorative vinyl-only EPs on five different labels the band finally signed to sub-pop – also home of The Go! Team and old Death Cab For Cutie whose new album Narrow Stairs is dropping May 13 on Atlantic, just had to plug – they released their self-titled debut LP. You can read their blog here. Could I have mentioned any more bands in this post? Probably.

No Age – Neck Escaper
