Every show we take on we make sure we have pride for the bands that play. They are not just bands, but they are our friends and a part of theFMLY, McWorld has been the best example of this. We’ve had the privileged of sharing our shows with some incredible musicians, formal and informal. Sometimes a show will come together with some of FMLY’s closest members and that’s exactly what will happen on March 25th at McWorld. If you haven’t seen any of these bands live, you are in for a great surprise. Time to bring the party. Thanks to Geoff Geis for the great flier as usual.
Wake up one morning to the smell of smoke, look out the window and everything once known is set ablaze. The skies bleed red as the ocean melts into the populous. Steel crumbles beneath the ground into the lava while the remaining folks in your position share the common memory that is your collective destruction. Boogie Boarder have stolen my heart. Lyke omg it’s lyke 1f Wavves (Juavves) was in that band Ponytail or s0mething.
Seriously, I saw Boogie Boarder at the Impose party last weekend. Wow. One of the single raddest bands I’ve seen all year. Get on this now (that’s what she said). Before you hop onto that board, warm up with a new hood jam and one of their best yet. Beastie Boys, meet Matt & Kim. Video of Beastie Boys featuring Nas at Bonnaroo after the jump.
Super interesting blends and mashups floating around out there. First up is Dead Prez remashed with David Banner by DJ Eleven. Taking suit to the chill vibes that were brought out by the Hood Internet orchestrated Grizzly Bear vs Dead Prez, Eleven views the classic from an attractive and curious perspective.
Girl Talk performed at Yale not too long ago and a bootleg has surfaced. As always with his live recordings, the sounds just make you wish you were there for the extended eargasmic portions of audible cheesecake. Download the entire performance at Free Culture.
SXSW was a blast. The crowd was enthusiastic, the food was savory (thank you Pita Pit), and discovering new music in a live setting is definitely preferred over a computer screen. I’d just like to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to come out, we never expected to reach capacity so quickly! Also, an equal in size thank you goes out to Sneak Attack Media, Tierra Productions, UV Vodka and Hi-Lo for sponsoring the event as well as Honey Claws, Ninjasonik, TheDeathSet, The Hood Internet, DD/MM/YYYY, Fol Chen, Rumspringa, Cerebral Ballzy, The Hungry Villagers, Madi Diaz, and Reverse X Rays for playing. Big apologies to those of you who came out for Youth Group on Thursday, hopefully you were able to catch them at the Australian music showcase.
In an effort not to flood this page with photos, follow the link below the tunes to see some of the adventure.
Here’s a FMLY secret, we’ve found a new addition to the best FRND category and her name is KE$HA. You probably know Kesha from the Flo Rida track “Right Round” where she sings about giving head and just having an all-around wholesome time. FMLY spent Friday evening and night as Kesha’s date to the Avalon and we couldn’t be more excited for the journey she is set to embark on; FMLY offers 100% of our support to the most awesome pop star of the 00’s. Kesha doesn’t just sing about sex, drugs and getting her freak on, but she actually gets down and dirty and has a sense of humor that the average sex symbol just doesn’t understand…plus she doesn’t just dig, but loves vinyl. Expect remixes from Switch and Diplo, a collaboration with Three Six Mafia and a solo record to drop towards the end of ‘09 via RCA. Production credits include Dr. Luke and Max Martin, if they sound familiar it’s because they sorta make the music for Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Pink and Britney Spears, no big deal.
So tomorrow we head down to Austin for our two day BLOWOUT. Pulling together pals as far out as Australia and our homies as close as Austin, we’re doing SXSW the way we want to…unofficial. Come out to HiLo for two free nights of free music, free UV Vodka, and priceless memories.
Leave it to Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O to tell a story through visuals. The art rockers teamed with director and fellow New Yorker Barney Clay for the video for band’s new single, ‘Zero,’ off their March 10-due album, It’s Blitz! The concept? The world is your stage, metaphorically speaking. “The visuals had to be well paced with the slow ecstatic build of the song,” Karen O tells Spinner. “It made sense that the visuals would take you on a journey and keep you on the move — no sitting still for too long in the city landscape of bright lights, dark alleys and glittering streets. ‘Zero’’s sentiment is to revel in being you — you’re a zero so screw it! It’s the underdogs, the rebels, the outsiders that have always captivated me growing up so I decided why not flaunt that side of myself in the video.”
As for Karen O’s favorite video of all time? “It’s a tie between Chris Cunningham’s ‘All is Full of Love,’ for Bjork, and ‘Thriller!’” Here, here. [via spinner.com]
Who would’ve thought that Beirut (in this case, Realpeople) would have become such an on-point beat? The Hood Internet, that’s who. Peep this awesome Ghostface Killah vs Beirut mash, HIGHLY rec’d. Don’t forget, The Hood boys will be holding down the decks between bands at night two of FMLY: Two Nights In Austin (Because One Night In Paris Wasn’t Enough). Check out an awesome online flyer and RSVP HERE! If you missed FMLY’s review of March of the Zapotec / Holland, catch up here.
unrelated: i’ve interviewed a folk hero of mine, tobacco / black moth super rainbow, and just wanted to give you all a heads up on more to look forward to. to be posted within the week.
Next weekend join us at the Tricot Showroom [map] for a night of amazing music with The Bird and The Bee, Haim, The Damn Sons, and [Post-foetus] as well as a fashion show and a couple of suprises. Tickets are $15 at the door but you can save some money by getting them in advance here. Remember; When you are coming to the Tricot Showroom, you will enter through the alley. There is a parking lot on Main and 9th. Take that alley between 9th and 8th to get into the show.
The week after, we will be heading down to SXSW to throw a two night party at HiLo. The party will feature your best friends and FREE UV Vodka all night. Both nights start at 8 and go till we can’t stand up anymore.
So it may be a little sad that I’ve noticed this, but Lil’ Wayne’s new mixtape art is inspired by a character from Tekken 5. I hope that Weezy is a fan.
In Hood Internet news, the mashers of musical cheese have put together one of their most spot-on tracks featuring Department of Eagles and Britney Spears. I’ll let you be the judge.
