“Beau was the first person I’d ever seen in our small scene that was going absolutely apeshit,” Siera once recalled. “I remember him picking up his amp and smashing it against things, and I just made a decision that I was going to play music with that guy. I didn’t know how or why, I just knew that I wanted to.” [via]
On Monday we noted the passing of inspiration, badass extraordinaire and now legend Beau Velasco. Today, Johnny Siera announced a viewing and memorial service in Brooklyn to take place tomorrow and Saturday. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Lets show Beau the same energy that he gave us all. Info and a video from the end of summer Bikes in the Kitchen show (Beau’s last) after the jump. I’ll def be pouring a 40 on the curb for my first time tomorrow.
Still don’t think that any tune is more fitting than this one…
R.I.P. my dear brother, friend and band mate Beau Velasco. We are all so devestated that I will keep this short. We love you and you will be missed. You affected us all so much in the most positive ways. Our lives would not be as is if not for you. We love you. For all those who wish to pay their respects we will let the details known soon.
-Johnny Siera, via TheDeathSet’s fbook
“beau was the definition of a solid guy, i don’t know what to say beyond that. he was just a really great guy and its real shame what happened.”
-Dan Deacon
FUCK. Beau, although you will be missed you will never be forgotten. The scars that we bear and our memories collectively accumulated are far too great to go untold. For those who are unfamiliar with Beau by name, he was a founding power animal of TheDeathSet. Rock until you’re a legend.
With a chaotically organized collection of EPs, remixes and compilations under TheDeathSet’s ever-expanding belts, it can get a bit confusing for everyone when it comes to determining how “Around The World” switched from Interpol antics on To, to She Wants Revenge vibes on Worldwide. Thankfully, on April 17 our pals will set the record straight with a worldwide release Rad Warehouses “to” Bad Neighborhoods, a collection of their first two EPs and remixes by Dan Deacon, Bonde do Role and more. Despite a slight change of name, the track below can be found on To and is the first single to be released from Rad Warehouses.
SXSW was a blast. The crowd was enthusiastic, the food was savory (thank you Pita Pit), and discovering new music in a live setting is definitely preferred over a computer screen. I’d just like to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to come out, we never expected to reach capacity so quickly! Also, an equal in size thank you goes out to Sneak Attack Media, Tierra Productions, UV Vodka and Hi-Lo for sponsoring the event as well as Honey Claws, Ninjasonik, TheDeathSet, The Hood Internet, DD/MM/YYYY, Fol Chen, Rumspringa, Cerebral Ballzy, The Hungry Villagers, Madi Diaz, and Reverse X Rays for playing. Big apologies to those of you who came out for Youth Group on Thursday, hopefully you were able to catch them at the Australian music showcase.
In an effort not to flood this page with photos, follow the link below the tunes to see some of the adventure.
So tomorrow we head down to Austin for our two day BLOWOUT. Pulling together pals as far out as Australia and our homies as close as Austin, we’re doing SXSW the way we want to…unofficial. Come out to HiLo for two free nights of free music, free UV Vodka, and priceless memories.
Next weekend join us at the Tricot Showroom [map] for a night of amazing music with The Bird and The Bee, Haim, The Damn Sons, and [Post-foetus] as well as a fashion show and a couple of suprises. Tickets are $15 at the door but you can save some money by getting them in advance here. Remember; When you are coming to the Tricot Showroom, you will enter through the alley. There is a parking lot on Main and 9th. Take that alley between 9th and 8th to get into the show.
The week after, we will be heading down to SXSW to throw a two night party at HiLo. The party will feature your best friends and FREE UV Vodka all night. Both nights start at 8 and go till we can’t stand up anymore.
TODD P GOES TO AUSTIN is a cultural snap-shot of America’s underground, do-it-yourself music scene featuring unforgettable live performances from Matt and Kim, Dan Deacon, Mika Miko,
The DeathSet and many more.
As record labels die, independents thrive. In the wake of Napster, MySpace and Facebook there is a generation of artists creating and performing music on their own terms. With the help of legendary DIY rock promoter Todd P, Brooklyn has become ground zero for these exciting young musicians.
Using never-before-seen footage, including material shot by the bands themselves, TODD P GOES TO AUSTIN exposes what life is like surviving and touring at the underground level. Interviews with Todd about the necessity of independent music and creativity connect the bands as they tour down to Austin, TX to appear in the DIY music scene’s answer to the SXSW Music Festival.
It’s impossible to spend time in New York and not be affected by Todd P, the man [and his interns] weaves culture into flawless seams of mosh, ecstasy, dance, spectacle and not only does it all on the cheap but all ages too! The first week I moved to NY in ‘07 I didn’t know who Todd P was, but I was familiar with the Brooklyn music scene and inadvertently made my way into quite a number of his events. When I wrote for CMJ, Todd was a panelist for a discussion on ’selling out’ and listening to him speak made a me a little angry, but I soon ‘got it’ and even quote some of his valid points in discussion. The man is a local icon and a future legend, so although I have much for-and-against Todd P I just need to give him his deserving big ups, props, respect and admiration from FMLY. Todd, you keep the dollars in my wallet, you introduce me to the most interesting people and I can’t even imagine my life in NY without Death By Audio, The Silent Barn and the ever-expanding list.
This being put out there, a movie has been made to honor his preservation of DIY ethic and hopefully bring in some fresh new faces to these intimate experiences. Trailer above.
I caught the Death Set’s welcome “home” show tonight at PopGun Booking’s Loose Nukes III party and without a doubt did not expect such a response from tri-city Brooklyn, Baltimore and Philly…it was phenomenal. Naeem Juwan (Spank Rock) showed up early and stayed all night chillin’ on stage alongside Telli Gramz (Ninjasonik). While blazing through To, Worldwide, and an inspiring remix of Daedelus’ “Fair Weather Friends” there may have been more crowd surfers than I saw at the last Matt&Kim show. Anyways, my body is in pain but my mind couldn’t be more satisfied or at ease. You can see it in their smile, the Death Set are insane.
The Death Set plays night two (March 20) of our SXSW party, FMLY: Two Nights In Austin, along with Japanther, Ninjasonik, Honey Claws, The Hood Internet and others. More info to be announced soon regarding our parties. Daedelus plays FMLY’s Booty Shaking party with Free The Robots, [Post-foetus] and Intricate Machines TONIGHT.
So for all you sonik fuckin’ ninjas out there, here’s a special treat. Ninjasonik just blessed Youtube with Ninjasonik TV where it’s all Teenwolf, New Dirty Bastard and Telli Grahmz ALL THE TIME! There’s vids of our boys in tighties partyin’ with Chicago’s Hollywood Holt, new official music videos and tons of live excitement. If you know me and Ninjasonik then you’ve seen me go balls to the wall jamming to “Negative Thinking (About Tight Pants).” Well as of a couple weeks ago there’s now an official video; filmed at the Chief Bodega with The Death Set, check out the hot, steamy magic above.
