I like electronic music. That’s a very superhero-ey thing to like, I suppose, isn’t it? I like avant-garde music in general. Cage, Stockhausen, Penderecki, Andrew Lang, Pierre Henry. Terry Riley is very good. Oh, and I’ve heard some interesting new music from Jamaica…a sort of hybrid between electronic music and reggae. It’s a fascinating study in the new musical forms generated when a largely pre-technological culture is given access to modern recording techniques without the technological preconceptions that we’ve allowed to accumulate, limiting our vision. It’s called dub music. – Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias

Nerd out with me for a second: I finished reading Watchmen a hot minute ago and it gave me the perfect excuse to throw together some super electronic jams and kick off this week’s end. Boys Noize will be playing at The Mighty in San Francisco on Saturday. I’ll be there. You should come. We can bust out some (polite) superhero dance moves.

Record Store Day at Fingerprints

Who is excited for the second annual record store day!? This is from the Fingerprints newsletter, definitely go check out FMLY FRNDS The Bird and the Bee and a band we’re super into, Crystal Antlers. For national record store day info click here, and for a list of participating stores click here.

The Bird And The Bee – Again And Again

——
Guest List (required for entry) for all the following in-store performances is now open. No purchase required, limit of 2 lists and one guest per person (but Fingerprints will open them wider next week, if any still have room.) Call Fingerprints at (562) 433-4996 asap to be added to the guest list.

Noon – Crystal Antlers: Indie buzz doesn’t get much louder than that being enjoyed by Long Beach’s own Crystal Antlers. They have the prestige that comes with being the last band to release an album on Touch & Go, and if you’re T&G, it’s a great swan song; their sound is a blend of psyche, garage, and prog elements with a seemingly endless supply of energy. Crystal Antlers are currently on tour opening shows for The Cold War Kids. As an in-store, it’s gonna be one for the books.

5:30 pm – Bird & The Bee: Bird & The Bee is Greg Kurstin and Inara George, both who’ve had pretty strong runs on their own, but who bring things up to a new level together. Greg has worked with Lily Allen, Beck, Flaming Lips, Red Hot chili Peppers, and who was the Geggy in Geggy Tah. Inara released her solo album All Rise on Everloving Records and got a lot of KCRW attention. She’s also brightened the last couple Idlewild albums with her guest appearances. Together they’ve taken their mutual love of classic jazz and added in a bit of their love of Hall & Oates, and he result is dry lightning; They’ve toured as openers for Lilly Allen, had their songs featured in Grey’s Anatomy twice (!), and gotten their tune “F*@king Boyfriend” featured in the movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Sex and the City. It’s gonna be great and it’s their only show scheduled this summer.

7:00pm – Matt Costa: What more is there to say about Matt besides the fact he could be our mascot; he’s an amazing songwriter and performer, he’s local, and he’s one of the first people we think of when it’s time to throw a party (maybe that makes him more hero than mascot, but he’s so much more down-to-earth than our other heroes that it sounds weird). Anyway, Matt’s between records, but he’s still sneaking a show in every once in a while (including a sold out HOB-Anaheim show on the 25h) but he’s been very gracious about coming in to party with us once again. Slipping him into the closing set is gonna be the perfect way to wrap up a day long celebration.

FMLY On Your Body

FMLY On Your Body is coming up and it’s time to get your tickets in advance! If you’ve missed our Facebook spam and our hints within posts the past few weeks, we’re presenting a fashion week event with The Bird and The Bee, Haim, [Post-foetus] and The Damn Sons.

The Bird and The Bee were recently on Ellen, the Jimmy Kimmel Show and will be playing Carnegie Hall on March 7. Haim are a trio of sisters – 16, 19 & 21 – who continue to just impress me with their talent, motivation and spirit. They were recently mentioned on MTV’s Buzz Worthy and a part of this amazing LA based group can be found playing with indie folk heir Jenny Lewis. The week of On Your Body, The Bird and The Bee will be performing live on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Haim will be on FMLY Radio and [Post-foetus] will perform on KXLU.

As you can see from the flyer, tickets are $15 at the door and $10 in advance. Facebook event is VOSS Water, presentations of upcoming fashion lines and models to gaze at for ages – so bring your A game! Also, check in for ticket giveaways and such…maybe even a chance to have dinner with your favorite FMLY writer?

The Bird And The Bee – Again And Again

Don Diablo 2k9

“Don Diablo has officially become the most (over?) hyped dj/producer of 2009.” [via]

So where do I begin with Don Diablo? Well…he’s Amsterdam-based and his parents named him after Captain Beefheart, so if you’re not downloading his music already then I don’t know how else to hook you. He takes beat, ties a string around it, jerks it around in the water for a bit, lets the fish nibble on it and what comes back is not what went under, but a pearl…made of gold. I came across Diablo on the dancefloor, I don’t hide my passion for select Walter Meego tracks so when a new remix of “Girls” drops I am on that like your younger sister on Twilight. To get to my point, it’s never too late in the night for a dance party – this one’s on me. Speaking of on me, take a moment to RSVP to our next event, FMLY On Your Body featuring The Bird and The Bee, Haim and [Post-foetus].

Wordpress is giving me trouble uploading tracks larger than 1.3MB, which is pretty much everything I would like to post. If anyone is knowledgeable about this situation and can help out just shoot me an email, noah@thefmly.com.

Natural History Museum’s First Fridays

First Fridays are back at Los Angeles’ Natural History Museum! Tonight brings The Bird And The Bee duo with our D.C. pals Jukebox the Ghost. Dublab DJs in the African Mammal Hall include The Phatal DJ and DJ Michael Stock.

This year’s series overview
This year Charles Darwin turns 200 and his world-altering On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection turns 150. Often considered one of the two or three most important – and misunderstood – texts published in the sciences, The Origin of Species is also one of a handful of scientific works that has reverberated beyond science, shaking the foundations of art, literature, philosophy, religion and society. This season’s First Fridays celebrate “Darwin Year” through entertaining and fascinating conversations with six of the world’s foremost authors and experts on the life of Darwin, the science of evolution, and the revolutionary impact of the man and his work.

Get To Know Coachella, Pt. 2

So you don’t know all of the bands that are playing Coachella but you’re totally psyched about going? No problem, that’s what we’re here for. And even if you’re not going to Coachella, it doesn’t hurt to learn about some fresh talent. Today, we’ll learn about Los Angeles’ The Bird and the Bee, who are relatively unknown amongst the people that I speak to despite their million MySpace plays and being signed to a major label.

The Bird and the Bee are a core duo of Greg Kurstin and Inara George, however, when they are on the road the duo becomes an ensemble of seven. Kurstin is a producer and keyboardist who has worked previously with Beck, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lily Allen. George is a professional singer and met Kurstin while she was recording her debut album. The two dug each others style and decided to create a jazz-influenced electro-pop project. They have been featured on Grey’s Anatomy twice, an iPod commercial that never aired and a remix of one of their songs soared to the number one spot on U.S. Club Dance Charts in December 2006. Their new EP, One Too Many Hearts (Blue Note), was released last week on Valentine’s Day.

This has always been my favorite song of theirs, Inara’s voice is just so smooth. Forgive the download however, we are out of bandwidth for the next week so I will be uploading songs for download onto Mediafire. It’s a pretty simple site but if you can’t figure it out just leave a comment saying so.
