ninjasonik & mishka present…

Between revamping live staple “Bars,” grindin’ and gettin’ a little wet all up on Major Lazer’s “Hold The Line” (blogged about) and remixing TheDeathSet’s “Negative Thinking” for at least the fourth time I have no choice but to continue displaying heavy public affection for our Brooklyn homies of Ninjasonik. Big ups to MИWKA for the release of Darth Baño, a well-timed and stealthy release by Telli “Bathroom Sex” Federline featuring some very legit guest verses by Spank Rock, Hollywood Holt, Blaqstarr, Johnny Nelson, Zakee Kuduro, Theophilus London, Cadence Weapon and other greats with production in the decks of Teenwolf and pals like Curses, Roofeeo, The Blanco Brothers, and way more.

The best news, it’s free. A message from Jah here. Download the mixtape here. Learn more about Mishka here.

Ninjasonik – Bars (Produced by Teenwolf)
Ninjasonik – Hold The Line (Produced by Major Lazer)

ps. “my eyes” is seriously a new side of spank rock’s lyricism. damn that feels good.

Thom Yorke Is DOOM’d

Initially, the combination of the Radiohead frontman and the metal-faced villain, seems incongruous. Upon closer examination, it’s perfectly natural: two insular, brooding weirdos, whose music reflects a constant, centrifugal tension with the world around them. [via]

It can’t be easy being Thom Yorke. You’re one of the most desired men on the planet by some of the most interesting men and women. Your hair never quite looks the way you want it to. You’re pasty and English but Spank Rock and DOOM are what fuels you, rap is daily substance towards getting through to the next one. Thom Yorke, we love you.

The Death Set At Loose Nukes

I caught the Death Set’s welcome “home” show tonight at PopGun Booking’s Loose Nukes III party and without a doubt did not expect such a response from tri-city Brooklyn, Baltimore and Philly…it was phenomenal. Naeem Juwan (Spank Rock) showed up early and stayed all night chillin’ on stage alongside Telli Gramz (Ninjasonik). While blazing through To, Worldwide, and an inspiring remix of Daedelus’ “Fair Weather Friends” there may have been more crowd surfers than I saw at the last Matt&Kim show. Anyways, my body is in pain but my mind couldn’t be more satisfied or at ease. You can see it in their smile, the Death Set are insane.

The Death Set plays night two (March 20) of our SXSW party, FMLY: Two Nights In Austin, along with Japanther, Ninjasonik, Honey Claws, The Hood Internet and others. More info to be announced soon regarding our parties. Daedelus plays FMLY’s Booty Shaking party with Free The Robots, [Post-foetus] and Intricate Machines TONIGHT.

Dan Deacon, Thank You, Future Islands, Secret Guests, These Are Powers and USAISAMONSTER will be at The 1896 tonight for the Crooklyn vs Bmore Battle – I’m betting you’ll be seeing Ninjasonik there as well and possibly Spank Rock. I can’t make it because I’m DJ’ing tonight, but give double dee my regards and I’ll see you at the Cake Shop tomorrow night.

The 2008 MTVu Woodie Awards are upon us and it’s time to vote. This year’s nominations include No Age, Simian Mobile Disco, Vampire Weekend, Santogold and more. You have until the end of the month and then some so there’s no rush, voting goes down here. The video above is me, my roommate, some friends and some strangers on stage at last year’s Woodie Awards with Santogold, Spank Rock, Benny Blanco and XXXChange for Spank Rock’s “Rick Rubin,” I later introduced The Shins and met Annie Lennox as well as Tom DeLonge…the Woodies are an interesting night.

Kid Sister vs. Amanda Blank

So 2008 has been dominated by two female rappers, Kid Sister and Amanda Blank. They each have strong ties to the “indie music community” as Muscles would put it and they’re each quite talented…but who really is the best?

Name!
Kid Sister – born Melissa Young – is a name that a lot of people can relate to, but who is Kid Sister really? Well she’s J2K from Flosstradamus‘ Older Sister which clears up why he performs with her, remixes her, and makes cameos in her vids. Kid Sister may not be the most bangable name in the world, but it’s a name with morals and you gotta respect that; family comes first with her.
Amanda Blank’s real name is Amanda Mallory…what? Two first names? It is pretty fucking cute though and Amanda Blank just flows so easily off the tongue.
Winner: AMANDA BLANK – when you’re with a girl you don’t want to constantly be thinking about your Kid Sister.

Crew!
Kid Sister is J2K’s sister (not to be confused with JFK of MSTRKRFT). She is dating A-Trak who is Kanye’s DJ as well as brothers from Dave 1 of Chromeo.
Amanda Blank rolls with Spank Rock and her old pals from Philly and Bmore.
Winner: Kid Sister – if her booming career turns into a dud she has plenty of cushion to fall back on.

Appearance!

[Kid Sister at Coachella]
[J2K hollerin' at Amanda]
Winner: Well the winner is obviously Amanda Blank, she’s bringing the sexy back into dirty. I’m not sure if her and J2K are still dating, I’m sure that they are. Weeeiiiirrrdddd crossover, right? Anyways, Kid Sister was much hotter as a blonde in my opinion.

Videos!

Kid Sister: Beeper (feat. The Count and Sinden)

Spank Rock: Loose (feat. Amanda Blank)

Winner: Yeah, I do think that Loose is a much better video, but it’s not Amanda’s and she, believe it or not, has no official videos of her own. I’m gonna have to give this one to Kid Sister.

I’m not even going to begin to analyze rapping style from both women, so this is where we end our contest. But who will be crowned the queen? Well…looking back at the scoreboard it looks as though we have a tie.

The Winner Is…

SANTOGOLD! She’s beautiful, smart, witty and check out her rap stylings in Spank Rock’s B.O.O.T.A.Y. along with Illivia.

If you don’t agree with the outcome, please attend Rock The Bells this year and let me know what you think.

A few last notes…

So there have been a couple of things that I’ve failed to report on today assuming that I didn’t need to. Then I realized that there is ALWAYS need to!

Lil’ Wayne’s Tha Carter III is set for release in June. The cover art features Weezy F. Baby as a…baby? Yeah, it’s actually a Lil’ Wayne baby photo. Expect this to be in the running for album art of the year – it is on our end.

FMLY fav, MC Spank Rock, has been hospitalized. If you went to Coachella hoping to find Naeem more fucked up than ever and ready to grace an audience with his over-the-top hypersexualized dance-hop like I was, then you were sadly disappointed to find that he had been replaced with a 30 minute Devlin and Darko DJ set followed by a 20 minute Amanda Blank set – both of which you could easily see on a nearly weekly basis in NYC. What happened is that Naeem was rushed to the hospital only an hour before he was scheduled to appear, “you know Spank Rock is always ready to party but this time the party got him,” says partner in crime and apple of my eye (along with Santogold), Amanda Blank. Whatever happened to him must be serious because he underwent some type of surgery on Monday and is still in a Palm Springs hospital. Our thoughts are with you Naeem, you’ll be pounding Smirnoff and blowing rails onstage again in no time!

Best Rock the Bells ever?

Bob Dylan Wins Pulitzer, Studio B Grows Garden

Bob Dylan won rock music’s first Pulitzer Prize.

“This year’s Pulitzer Prizes in honored two musical innovators who tend to reject categorization: A special citation went to singer-songwriter Dylan, and the annual music award went to composer and Los Angeles native David Lang.” [Chicago Tribune, thanks BV]

and…
