cfcf x health

HEALTH just released a very laid back CFCF remix of Get Color’s “Before Tigers.” Definitely a tune to sip margaritas to, good thing we still have some summer left. Don’t forget to check out our interview with HEALTH that was posted yesterday.

If you like your tones filthy and your vocals interpretive then there’s really no need to look further than HEALTH. Los Angeles’ experimental dream team have picked up quite a bit of press over the past few years and on the cusp of releasing their second full length album we thought it’d be appropriate to check-in. I don’t intend for this to seem romantic, but a few weeks ago I had a sit down brunch with HEALTH, minus Jake, and Jake Friedman of Lovepump United. We met the day after the band played the Williamsburg Waterfront, when I wrote this, and the day before they took off for Europe. Previous to this I spent a few days with the dudes in Los Angeles assisting their shoot for “Die Slow” in our ol’ Out Of Asia warehouse putting us already a few Tecate and Kombucha deep into a lovely bromance story…

FMLY: What is Lovepump? I see it as a family.

HEALTH: Lovepump is family, that has always been the motto.

The fact that it’s music by musicians put forth as an effort from musicians is just the way to go about it rather than an industry dictating what music is. Jake, since it started with your band Glitter Pals are there any other labels or collectives that Lovepump works closely with?

[John] No. [pause&laughter] Actually, Cityslang. Starting tomorrow we’re hitting up Germany with them.

[german gibberish and some side conversation I shouldn’t talk about]

Speaking of dicks [told you I shouldn’t talk about it], who made the Lovepump logo?

[Jake] The Lovepump logo was made by SERIPOP who are a design team in Montreal and coincidentally two of the members in AIDS Wolf – one of the first bands we released on Lovepump. Yeah, I was the model but you know what, it’s not even about being a severed penis just as much as it’s not music for your mom and that’s kind of the way it should be. [John] I would have to agree with that statement. [BJ] I had no idea there was a dick bone.

[the next ten minutes was spent talking about large animals’ dick bones, Mr. Hands, keeping it up, horse dicks, whale dicks, internet hyped dicks, dudes cutting off their dicks online, etc…needless to say we scared away the dude sitting next to us in the cafe. interview continues after the jump]

We’ve really been missing the Go! Team ’round these parts, so it’s super great to hear that they’re keeping busy. It’s also really great to hear that this “busy” is remixing none other than Black Moth Super Rainbow! Kicking it back to pre-Proof of Youth jams sporting flutes, handclaps, and infectious melodies this remix (or reimagination) comes highly recommended for Black Moth and Go! Team fans. More remixes here and below. Don’t forget to peep our lengthy interview with BMSR right here.

smmr rmxs – the faunts

Write what you know. It is the most common advice offered to young songwriters, and it’s probably the best. But in the case of Faunts’ approach to songwriting, such advice would be misguided and reductive at best. This is a group of musicians who write what they can imagine. <via>

The Faunts make beautiful music, so it’s no surprise that they have beautiful remixes. Enjoy.

radiohead in the studio

As visible in the photo above, it looks as though Thom Yorke has finally given up. Honestly, I think it’s about time because I really don’t know how he was planning on topping In Rainbows. Perhaps I should be more specific… Thom is not giving up music, but rather – as you can see – signing his soul over to the Devil [and Daniel Johnston] for a sound that will top what we heard in 2007.

Radiohead have gone back into the studio to start work on the follow-up to their 2007 album In Rainbows.

“We just went in last week,” bassist Colin Greenwood said. “It was really good. It was really noisy and chaotic and really fun.”

But the group do not have fully formed songs yet, he said.

“We’re at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re looking at all the bits and thinking, what next?”

The new album, which will be their eighth, will again see producer Nigel Godrich work with the band. [via BBC]

If you remember last summer, then you may have that new Radiohead tune on your computer. If not, it’s an unformed melodic and gorgeous arrangement called “Super Collider.” Video after the jump, download below.

there’s a ghost in me who wants to say i’m sorry

I’ve gotta give it up to the Toxic Avenger for this Ladytron remix. Compressed to leave the vocals skimming the surface of this awesome beat, Toxie has given us a new dancefloor jam that I can’t wait to rock out to! I’m a big fan of Ladytron and this is like the first time hearing “Destroy Everything You Touch,” an instant classic. Throw on your dancing shoes and get out of the house tonight. It’s Saturday and there has gotta be a DJ spinning this track!

For fans of Toxie who are going to see him sometime soon, make sure to smoke the guy out. He works very hard and certainly appreciates the gesture.

Just when I thought that I could get back to finals Peter sends me an email saying dude with a psychedelic horseshit ton of u’s. Enticed, I opened it to find bewilderment in an Anamanaguchi remix! How do you remix an 8bit tune? I haven’t the slightest clue, but Ary remixed Peter on “Helix Nebula” a while back so maybe I’ll get an email in another half-hour with a breakdown of how it goes down. The driving beat sounds a lot like an old Glass Candy tune, but I don’t know the title. If you’re motivated enough I can tell ya that it started out The Hood Internet vs The Pack mixtape. I’m also all about the “mountain.” As some of you know, ‘guchi drummer boy Luke Silas has a project called Dracula Mountain that we’re big fans of – “Danger Mountain” now adds to this Lightning Bolt inspired resume. Check out Makeup and Vanity Set right hurr.

The New West Indian Girl

Probably the most remixed band in LA, West Indian Girl never disappoint. While in the sudio recording a new EP that is “laced with a bunch of attitude and dipped in a vat of darkness”[blog], they have put out a new music video for “Back to You (Republic Tigers Kenn Jankowski Remix)” off of the 4th on the floor remix CD.If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s definitely worth checking out. There are some real jams.

Flashback! Party Sequence

So here at FMLY we’re beginning a new edition to the blog, the Flashback! Party Sequence. The exclamation is part of the name because I really want to add the emphasis on the nostalgic elements of this section. Anyways, it’s the Friday after Valentines Day and everyone just wants to get their groove on to some good tunes, so tonight is a specialty. I have a fondness for DJ Sega and taking into account that Nevermind was the first CD that I ever owned (owned, not bought), here is a jam for the party at your place later tonight.

DJ Sega – Smells Like Teen Spirit

Hood Internet Goes “100 Million”

Alright, so to be perfectly honest I have no idea who the fuck Birdman is but I’m definitely digging the name…I think I saw him on a Lil’ Wayne video once? Anyways, I haven’t heard the original version but I loved the XXXChange one so much that when I saw that our friends over at The Hood Internet had mashed it up with Daft Punk’s friend, Sebastien Tellier, I had to check it out. Long story short, this mash has made me a fan of Birdman and Sebastien Tellier, especially Tellier’s cover art, damn…

Black Vinyl Mirrors

The world of indie and electronic – that I like to call electrindie – has once again joined forces to combat a song that has definitely dominated my stereo for the past year. The Arcade Fire in all of their innovative promotional madness have recently announced a remix “contest” for their first single, “Black Mirror.” The song tracks have already been isolated for you and are being hosted by rorrimkcalb.com where you can also find the incredible new interactive video for the song directed by Olivier Groulx and Tracy Maurice. Maryland’s Oh Snap!!, who we learned about from JoeeIrwin on IHEARTCOMIX the other day, was quick on the game and has already posted his remix which you can check out on his MySpace.

Here are some of the isolated tracks, forgive me if I don’t know exactly what the instrumentation is.

Arcade Fire – Black Mirror (acapella)
Arcade Fire – Black Mirror (drums)
Arcade Fire – Black Mirror (i have no idea what this is)
Arcade Fire – Black Mirror (guitar, violin and keys)
Arcade Fire – Black Mirror (very eerie reverb)
Arcade Fire – Black Mirror (orchestra)
Arcade Fire – Black Mirror (full song)
