What can be said about Radiohead that hasn’t already been uttered by someone else. These guys are our generation’s biggest band, affirmed by the continuous release of ever-evolving albums and keeping a low profile, few bands can attain the sheer respect and mystic that Yorke, the Greenwood bros, O’brien, and Selway have shrouded themselves in.
Someone once told me that ‘Never cry over something that cannot cry over you.‘ For some reason that quote rang through my ears as I stood and watched this set, wondering if these songs were crying over me, or the world in general, and if these songs were a hiccup in the logic of that quote.
This week the world has been a-flutter with the news that Radiohead might be releasing new material on Monday, August 17 after a new song seemed to appear online.
Now, eagle-eyed observers have noticed that elements of the file and code attached to the song featured the words “wall” and “of” and “ice”, and that indeed the combination of the three appeared in a mysterious poem that accomanpanied the track on back-of-the-internet-lorry site what.cd. You can find all the Wall of Ice stuff hidden in the ASCII code here.
If you therefore assume that Radiohead follow the same model as they did with In Rainbows – ie they create a website based on the title of the release – you get www.wallofice.com. And that leads straight to the WASTE shop. In other words, it looks very much like the rumours are true: there’s an EP coming with that title and Radiohead’s site is all set up to receive the orders via that site.
It would also be a massive raspberry to EMI, who are reissuing a load more Radiohead back catalogue to feed Guy Hands’ coffers in a few weeks, not to mention being entirely in tune with Thom Yorke’s hints that the band are no longer interested in going down the path of releasing full-length albums.
Read some nerd discourse about it all here. Geeks not happy about Radiohead using geek thieving technology to release records before they can get hold of them, and so on.
Listen to what might, or might not, be Radiohead’s ‘Wall Of Ice’ below: [via the quietus]
I can’t verify if any of this is true mostly because I’d rather go to the beach than sit at my computer decoding Radiohead messages…but I appreciate the hell out of the folks that do this for us! Hopefully this is true, so here’s the “new tune.” Remember our last Radiohead scare? Cryptic message after the jump.
I personally never caught on to the “Jizz In My Pants” phenomenon, so this is either way overdue or just much tighter…I’m going with the latter. Superpowerless has recently become an 8bit interest of mine, creating simple pop melodies that are fun to dance or just listen to and these videos of his are spot-on. This has definitely become one of my favorite things on Youtube, even beats the dog taking a shit on a baby.
As visible in the photo above, it looks as though Thom Yorke has finally given up. Honestly, I think it’s about time because I really don’t know how he was planning on topping In Rainbows. Perhaps I should be more specific… Thom is not giving up music, but rather – as you can see – signing his soul over to the Devil [and Daniel Johnston] for a sound that will top what we heard in 2007.
Radiohead have gone back into the studio to start work on the follow-up to their 2007 album In Rainbows.
“We just went in last week,” bassist Colin Greenwood said. “It was really good. It was really noisy and chaotic and really fun.”
But the group do not have fully formed songs yet, he said.
“We’re at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re looking at all the bits and thinking, what next?”
The new album, which will be their eighth, will again see producer Nigel Godrich work with the band. [via BBC]
If you remember last summer, then you may have that new Radiohead tune on your computer. If not, it’s an unformed melodic and gorgeous arrangement called “Super Collider.” Video after the jump, download below.
Hopefully we can all agree that Radiohead is an exceptional group of talented musicians whom we all care very deeply for. Unfortunately for us, the “music biz” and “authentic personalities” like to reach out by covering a Radiohead jam and maybe throwing in a ‘fucking’ here and there for either indie cred, youtube hits or whatever other sick idea brews within their head. An even greater misfortune is that 90% of the time it is “Creep” that is covered and I speak for a global community of fans when I say that we just can’t take it anymore. If KROQ in Los Angeles didn’t kill the tune then Korn did and if Korn didn’t then someone else did…who am I kidding, Korn definitely did.
My point is, there are so many amazing Radiohead tunes. Why do musicians choose to slay the same one over and over and over and over again? Yeah, it’s an incredible sing-a-long and everyone can find a time in their life where “Creep” was incredibly meaningful to their identity, but what about the song’s aura of authenticity? I don’t even know if I could ever even watch Radiohead themselves play creep ever again! Many more covers after the jump from Korn, Moby, Ingrid Michaelson, The Pretenders, Anni Rossi, Amanda Palmer and countless more. Most of these are very well done and I like them quite a bit, and do continue to cover Radiohead, but please choose a different song or show the tune a new light. Walter Benjamin would have a field day on this one.
Yo, hit the decks because it’s about to get wet up in ‘dis boat! After last year’s Rock the Bells where curators thought it’d be a good idea to go way of the hip-bone and add our buds Ninjasonik as well as Spank Rock, Santogold, Flosstradamus and the Cool Kids to the bill, I’m glad the fest has taken to its roots once more. Although I love our boys unconditionally and it was so dope that they had the chance to appear, I like my bells to be rocked by the voices of hip-hop liberty and I’m not so down to shell out the big bucks for artists that can be seen any other time for free in a more intimate environment. This being said, lets get down to business.
The current Rock the Bells lineup for 2009 is:
Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley
The Roots
Common
Big Boi (Outkast)
KRS-One
Slum Village
House of Pain w/ all original members
Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli + Hi Tek)
Tech N9ne
RZA
Raekwon
Sage Francis
Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5′9,” Crooked I)
M.O.P.
Chali 2na (Jurassic 5)
Necro
Eyedea & Abilities
Evidence
Psycho Realm
Mystic Journeymen (Sunspot Jonez + Lucky I Am)
Mickey Factz
Tabi Bonney
Hosted by:
KRS-One
Supernatural
Murs
Pete Rock
The festival will take place in Toronto, Washington D.C., Boston, New York, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Vancouver. Each stop will feature 25 acts on two stages, a vendor village, surprise performances and more.
I caught KRS-One when he hosted the East Village Radio Music Festival last Summer and although, of course, it isn’t the same vibe as catching the roots hip-hop hero back in the day – probably due to the amount of Girl Talk fans in the audience wanting to “whoop whoop” – he is still THE man. I’m wondering if Bert and Ernie will make a special appearance for M.O.P. (as shown in the video atop). Big ups to our homies at the Tape for attending the press conference and emailing us immediately about the news.
The YYYs “Zero” has now been remixed by MSTRKFRFT, N.A.S.A., and Animal Collective. The first two mentioned are below while we wait for Deakin’s take to appear on the single’s 7″ as a b-side. If you’ve ordered the record from Insound already then you’ve got a collectible freebie coming to you.
I received a mysterious email from France today letting me know about some remixes I may like and let me just say Etienne, thank you. Much like the stunning Amplive Radiohead Remixes and imaginative Flying Lotus reinterpretation, Three Leaves And A Head take “Nude” and “Reckoner” into a new context that reintroduces the fan to In Rainbows. Now I’m a picky guy when it comes to remixes, especially concerning Radiohead, but my jaw was literally floored after watching these remixes correspond the the official videos. Honesty, I feel as though Etienne’s interpretation takes on a better relationship with the video whereas Radiohead’s tunes seemed more autonomous. Highly recommended to ‘head fans and those looking to join the club – also recommended for connoisseurs of the ambient.
A craigslist ad was posted today by Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead asking for help in making voting robots to win Los Anjealous’ Best LA Concert of 2008 contest. I say shame on you Radiohead. Shame on you for hating on our national treasure Aziz Ansari and shame on you for trying to cheat this contest. Check out Aziz’ blog where I found out about this horrible tragedy.
Well apparently when I wasn’t looking The Cool Kids signed to XL; home of Radiohead, Ratatat, The Teenagers, etc… Anyways, their brand spankin’ new mixtape That’s Stupid dropped earlier TODAY for FREE. Get on it, seriously! The tape is hosted by none other than L.A.’s Mondo Fresco from Power 106. Don’t forget to catch Mikey and Chuck this summer at Rock the Bells in a city near you!
Beck’s first new single, “Chemtrails,” has been released from his still untitled Danger Mouse produced LP. You can listen to the track over at Beck’s website or Beck’s MySpace.
Also, Radiohead has completed the first leg of their American tour. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews and am crying a bit inside since I’ll have to miss them once again this tour. Their Dallas setlist was as follows and the photo above was taken by David with GvB.

Wow, it was quite a crazy holiday weekend, but if you happened to be in New York City then it was quite a hot one as well! Lots of work is coming up as this week IS Coachella week, one of the busiest times of the year for FMLY. Today I would just like to quickly mention that Grizzly Bear will be on Conan O’Brien tonight followed by M. Ward and Zoey Deschanel’s lovely She and Him tomorrow all building up to Radiohead on Wednesday…yeah, Radiohead.
One of the biggest bands in the world, Radiohead, will make an exclusive appearance on NBC’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” Wednesday April 23 (12:35-1:35am ET). The band – who made their network television debut on “Late Night” and were O’Brien’s first-ever musical guest in 1993 – has recorded an exclusive live performance from their critically acclaimed and record-industry-paradigm-shifting release “In Rainbows” to air on O’Brien’s contribution to NBC’s “Green Week” of environmentally conscious programming.
Recorded live in London, Radiohead’s performance of “House of Cards,” represents an ongoing effort by the socially conscious band to act in the greenest manner possible. By opting to record this exclusive performance rather than fly over for a one-off appearance, the band – as frontman Thom Yorke notes in the introduction to their performance – avoided leaving a carbon footprint equivalent to driving one’s car for a solid year.
Other guests on “Late Night’s” “Green” show are a bit more literal – “Robot Chicken” creator and actor Seth GREEN and “Today” show travel editor Peter GREENberg.
Alright, so I don’t really understand this video, but does anyone really understand Animal Collective? I’d like to think that an in depth look at the music and lives of the group will be written in a few generations as AC is looked at with the same passion that we look at figures such as Radiohead and Bob Dylan (being Panda Bear). AC will play Coachella, and more AC news in the post directly below this one. I’ve had the Water Curses EP on repeat since I received it and it is yet a new level for Animal Collective, they somehow managed to raise their own bar even further.
