Head over to Impose for Labeled – a great piece, interview, and breakdown on Los Angeles’ Not Not Fun. Most recently, FMLY held a psychedelic night of funk, pop, and dancing at the Museum of Neon Art with Vibes, Pocahaunted, and Magic Lantern of the Not Not Fun crew; it’s safe to say that we’re head over heels for NNF. The link to the piece is above where you can also download a Not Not Fun compilation for Impose including FMLY favs Ducktails, Peaking Lights, and more great tunes.

Peaking Lights Are Made For Cassette

I built most of the things we use. My set-up is a very primitive form of a modular synth. Each of those EQ’s are actually oscilators and the sliders on them do what the keys on a piano would do though with more range. The stuff that Indra has- the twirling light is a drum machine made out of an old sonar for fishing and that white thing on the top of her box is a cassette wired with a massacred keyboard to produce loops and rhythms. The record player that’s spinning is hand cut from an old record, also use locked grooves on some. There are a lot more things in the mix too. I just finished building a three-head tape delay… though that’s new.

Peaking Lights have the right credentials for NotNotFun, and in addition are dream cast onto Night-People, A.R.F, and Fuckittapes. Interweaving the sounds of empty space with repetitive hooks, newlyweds Indra Dunis and Aaron Coyes have a combined experience that take most a lifetime; some of the projects they have been involved in are Numbers, Dynasty, Black Label, Spacecobra, Heart of Snow, Unborn Unicorn, Omen Compass, Faceplant, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Loach Fillet in Mummers EYPE, Jooklo Duo, a recent recording session with Muraga Booker and the both of them also have a hand in Rahdunes.

The sounds created under their PL moniker shows much more of their character than it does any particular message or theme. I’ve copy&pasted a great article after the jump for those who enjoy. Peaking Lights played the Cake Shop with Indian Jewelry last year, videos here.

I’m having trouble uploading tracks that are longer than 4:30, so thank you to Raven Sings The Blues for hosting “Owls Barning” and “All The Good Songs Have Been Written.” Please check out the MySpace, and pick up Imaginary Falcons on cassette here (only 150 made) or LP here. For a glimpse at the homemade from criagslist setup, click here.

You God It Kind Of Vibes

Sweet sweet news from Not Not Fun Records. There’s a bit of a NNF supergroup a’brewin called Vibes that may include Amanda from Pocahaunted – we’re a little head over heels for the NNF gals if you haven’t noticed. Their debut cassette release, You God It, is intended “for all lovers of soul, soul funk, funk, funk rock, classic funk, and outsider funkadelics.” Chris from GvB explains it best as “garage soul jams” for those with a taste for Ducktails, Pocahaunted or Sun Araw. 100 copies were made and are already sold out, but with some sleuthing you may be able to find a copy. For more information I suggest checking out Raven Sings The Blues.

According to the Not Not Fun homepage, a book entitled Spooky Face is in the works. The front page to the website is a picture drawn by Diva Dompe (blackblack) and looks like a great discovery that you may find at the Smell or Family Bookstore one day. Also, NNF’sters need a place to crash during SXSW. If you have a place in Austin with extra room then hit Amanda up at amanda@notnotfun.com, or go here for all the info.
