numb this hurt

Jon Barba – the gentle, relentless, and cathartic force behind the guise of Los Angeles’ Nicole Kidman – brought some of our mutual pals with him to Pehrspace on Monday to perform a new story, “I Don’t Want To Die.” As he says in the beginning of the video, the first part is about a girl Jon knew when he was younger, the second part is about Miley Cyrus, and the third part is about God. Our bros standing off to the side providing accompaniment are Geoff and Tyler of Pizza!.

It’s difficult for me to write about Jon’s music, he hits a soft spot internally that is painful to massage…but to acknowledge these places inside, I can only appreciate with all of the emotional energy that I can invest. Whether it be love in a variety of situations, eccentric confusion, or coping with life when it lies out of your hands, I believe it’s impossible to fully grasp the weight of these songs, let alone entire cassettes. They are each fogged windows which allow us to just take small peeks into this sweetheart’s guts, mind, heart, and presence. His output is far too great for me to keep track of, but he has a running list on his MySpace and his recent release Teen Worship (on Obeast Tapes) is one of my most treasured pieces of physical music. You can read a great piece about Nicole Kidman and FMLY’s Philip Seymour Hoffman in a Seattle newspaper, The Stranger, right here. Lyrics for “I Don’t Wanna Die” are after the jump.

tune of the night

I love acting but I don’t like all of the other stuff associated with it. The interest in celebrities, the press, the Internet, when your identity becomes mixed up in the way people are perceiving you.

pick up a copy of nicole kidman’s teen worship on cassette from obeast tapes or cd from bridgetown records. i have so many new tapes to listen to from my trip to the west coast, but i’ve found it really difficult to take this one out of the walkman.

tune of the night

Art is my catharsis of living in a world where it is hard to maintain my perceived desires from signs that serve as false prophets of meaning. We are a society stuck between the weightless efficiency technology affords and lingering hope for a religious experience in material things. We would give up our belief in ornaments, aura and art’s objecthood if we weren’t too afraid there was nothing behind the facades of meaning we’ve created. This pure place is what I allude to.

Cloud Nothings hit up the Market Hotel last night with Woods and Real Estate for what I’m pretty sure was their first show ever. Was anyone there? Tell me about it! If you couldn’t make it, Cloud Nothings play Shea Stadium tonight with Coasting! Here’s a new Cloud Nothings jams for your portable listening device pleasure. And if you haven’t already, pick up Cloud Nothings’ debut CD or cassette tape before they’re out right here via Bridgetown Records.

and the oscar goes to…

Nicole Kidman is not only one hell of an Australian actress, but the alias for one special Angelino. Jon Barba sings so close to the heart that I’m questioning my understanding of what a breast pocket really is, for if I’m not carrying my affection deep inside then what good is it? In addition to the heartful jams I’m overly appreciative to Jon for supporting my belief of honesty over virtuosity as my body trembles upon hearing his voice shake. Let the good virtue left in this world find Nicole Kidman and 2012 will surely be a period of enlightenment. Jon has quite a number of shows coming up, hit up the myspace for more info.
