Free Kisses plays Shea Stadium in Brooklyn tonight for what I’m pretty sure is her first time trekking into the States from Toronto with music in mind. We’ve put her on the spot a few times here and there for good reason, her sounds can infiltrate your good spirits and wrap them in a jacket to keep them from catching a cold. Her voice can lay a jacket eternally for your footsteps to keep your shoes, feet, and socks from absorbing the ice cold puddles which impede a day’s path. Karen is a friend through her sounds, and thankfully a super friendly person that loves some good conversation. Playing with her tonight are Shark?, Byrds of Paradise, and FMLY’s own Philip Seymour Hoffman. Shea Stadium is 20 Meadow St in Brooklyn and the show starts at 8pm.

ALL AGES // 8PM // OCT20 // *ROUND ROBIN

Whaaaat, I guess it has already been a year since we partied last CMJ with DD/MM/YYYY, Rumspringa, The Hood Internet, Ninjasonik and more of our homies in Brooklyn…but we’re back and ready to kick some ass. This time, we’re doing shit a bit differently and showing the Lower East Side what’s up. Don’t worry Bushwick, we’ll be in you like swine flu and killin’ it the rest of the week!

This year we’re doing things a little different and bringing Los Angeles to New York as well as sprinkling the night with some good pals from Baltimore, Boston by way of Toronto and of course, Brooklyn.

This is night one, our official CMJ Showcase.
Part two are guerrilla shows throughout the week to be announced sporadically.
Night three is the raddest fucking duplex party of the fall.

WE ALSO HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF FMLY SHIRTS FOR SALE. GET IN TOUCH IF YOU WANT ONE.

the breast days are behind us

I was reading the Daily News tonight to find out what went down in Central Park yesterday afternoon (while everyone was at Girl Talk in Williamsburg). Apparently Sunday was national topless day and women from all over the country were in the park to bare almost all of it for supporting equality concerning normalization of the female body. I fully support this and think it’s a rad stand, but this was news to me:

New York is the only state in the country where women can be topless legally, after a 1992 ruling in the state’s highest court. That means any woman can walk around the city at any time with no shirt on. [via]

Yes, you read that correctly. This changes everything. Oh what fun we’re going to have planning our CMJ parties…uncensored radical pictures (just to be gratuitous on the topless shots today) after the jump courtesy of Gothamist and the various photographers whose names you can find out on their site. And an advance apology to the female community for our male gaze on today’s posts. We’ll post some abs and greek god cuties this week for ya!

Tepr – Tits, Yeyo & Yum Yum
EASYBOY – Chest Swimmers (eric, i hope you see this. ha!)
The Coathangers – Nestle In My Boobies

superman arrested, batman escapes

Superman and Batman took on New York’s Finest last night in an epic Crossroads of the World battle that left the Caped Crusader in cuffs. Stunned Times Square tourists and office workers watched agog as cops struggled to subdue Clark Kent’s alter ego without kryptonite.

Ha, holy shit. Keep reading, it gets better.

independence day in new york

This 4th of July weekend’s Captured Tracks/Woodsist festival boasts an awesome lineup of bands we dig – Psychedelic Horseshit, Blank Dogs, the Mayfair Set, Gary War, Dum Dum Girls, Real Estate, Ganglians, Tyvek, Vivian Girls, and Thee Oh Sees to name a few – and comes highly recommended by FMLY. Two day passes are $25 dollars, full lineup, location, and price of each day after the jump. After the date on 4th of July is an afterparty at the Market Hotel with ONADDES (listed as ‘tentative’), The Fresh & Onlys, Pink Reason and Babies (featuring folks from Woods, Vivian Girls, Bossy).

Another 4th of July option is catching a free show in Battery Park with Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band and Jenny Lewis. A Haim sister has been on tour with Jenny so show your support! Haim will also play FMLY Beach Dazed.

Lit Fuse Bike Shop has a 1pm show with Japanther, Ninjasonik, Ghost Mall and Muhammadali. Weren’t the Death Set on this as well?

psychedelic horseshit isn’t struck by wavves

[Psychedelic Horseshit @ SXSW Brooklyn Vegan day party]

Washington Post: Vivian Girls, Wavves – why is everyone in a lo-fi band now?

Psychedlic Horseshit’s Matt Whitehurst: I have no idea. I don’t know. It became in vogue sometime in the last year due to a few figureheads talking a bunch of [expletive] on Terminal Boredom. And now it’s exploded into this thing there where Wavves is getting $30,000 to [expletive] crank out this [expletive] generic [expletive].

There’s a lot of one-person things now.

Right it’s one person with GarageBand and a few chords and like — Wavves to me sounds like [expletive] TV on the Radio. That band sucks [expletive]. It’s one of the worst bands to get popular in a long time. They [expletive] trump No Age because I think it’s worse than No Age. No Age is just like, [expletive]. It’s really [expletive].

But you’re playing at least one show with Wavves down here.

Three of them, yeah.

So how do you reconcile that?

We made “Wavves Suxx” t-shirts with it spelled S-U-X-X. We got tons of people taking pictures with us in those. People are all into it. And actually Wavves came up to our drummer and our drummer had no idea it was Wavves. And Wavves took like six pictures with Rich with the “Wavves Suxx” t-shirt on. So, you know, that little [expletive]’s probably into it or something. And is probably like, Oh, it’s like hip-hop, man!

People could know nothing about you but your band name and it would be pretty easy to figure out you’re probably not going to be indie rock superstars.

I guess not. We’d love to be but I guess we picked the wrong name for that. We should have named ourselves Wavves. We’d be rich now if we would’ve. We’re better than Wavves, he does the same kind of [expletive].

Check out the rest of the interview at the Washington Post’s site. I’m a fan of both Psychedelic Horseshit and Wavves’ tunes so this interview just caught my eye, thought you may find it interesting. For those unfamiliar with either, here are some tunes for your enjoyment.

Psychedelic Horseshit – Country Punk (live at wfmu)
Psychedelic Horseshit – New Wave Hippies
Wavves – Friends Were Gone
Anamanaguchi – So Bored (8bit Wavves cover)

Psychedelic Horseshit is on tour with Quintron at the moment and they’ll be hitting up the Market Hotel tonight with Wizzard Sleeve. Market Hotel is 1142 Myrtle Ave @ Broadway in Bushwick, BKLYN.

Wavves plays shares an AMAZING lineup this Saturday in NY with These Are Powers, Crystal Stilts, Crash Diet Crew, and (one of FMLY’s favs) Muggabears! The show is free for college students if you get to the topman store by seven tonight EVERYONE (according to a comment that these are powers left on this post). Flyer and more info after the jump.
