yes! please. show me music

Well fuck, it’s not very often I get excited about a band after the first listen. But I’ve fallen for Rainbow Arabia already. Think Gang Gang Dance, the Avalanches all mixed with Thievery Corp and some dub step that’s damn danceable. The following songs transcended what normality could have ever offered and danced their way past the weird all the way to epic. The new album drops July 28th, so you get all this time to just get wet waiting.

Catch them the 28th at the Echoplex and you won’t be disappointed.

Here’s a sample of what to expect. Must see music video after the jump.

Rainbow Arabia – Omar K (Ghosts on Tape remix)

Let’s just continue dancing all day today and all day tomorrow… It’s the start of a very good weekend, see you all in south central.

Past and Gone

Thanks to the Pitchfork twitter for this one. (Click to listen)

Simplicity seems to be easy to comprehend yet difficult to produce. The paradox that’s locked in that statement is comparable to the likes of the minimalist movement in visual art, holding the boxed, hued colors of precise thought and inferred beauty. This psalm uses a clear-beachy guitar to strum a rhythm that harnesses this simplicity but somehow reflects this simplicity in glorious circle of light held up by a chain of hidden snap-like links keeping time. The gentle whistle and background voice of King Khan acts as a balcony for Saba Lou – the 8 something’s voice has the nervous quality of youth, adding nicely to her clear and soulful song – Letting Saba stand tall above those who would normally tower above her.

This Will Destroy You

This Will Destroy You follows the path of Texas’ instrumental post-rock lineage. You may recognize the band from the recently released Field Studies, their split with a band I’ve mentioned here before, Lymbyc Systym. TWDY has one album and one EP under their belts with hopefully many more of each to follow. If you’re building the soundtrack to the most epic moments of your life, This Will Destroy You should certainly be on it…unless you’ve never lived.

Deerhunter at The Music Hall of Williamsburg (10/30)

Missing every show that Deerhunter is playing in your town? Well look no further than this post, unless you want to find out about MORE music I’m into, because the sweethearts over at NYCTaper recorded the Atlanta based groups’ entire show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn Friday night. Download the magic here.

edit: i’ve been told that nyctaper is down for now. i was just there an hour ago so i don’t know what to say other than just enjoy the video above. try again tomorrow?

Funk It Up

When I was growing up my dad always told me that at a party if you put on some funk, everybody is happy. I’ve always remembered this advice and it’s always worked for me. If people aren’t digging the music you are playing, throw on some James Brown and everyone will dance. I’ve often wondered though why there aren’t a ton of funk bands now. Everyone loves it and it’s fun to play. Sure I have my undying love for Erykah Badu but where is my LA funk! Finally, a couple weeks ago, I found my LA based funk fix through Itai Shapira of The Elevaters who also happens to be one of the founding members of the band. Babystone is the creation of Itai Shapira and Novena Carmel who is the daughter of funk legend Sly Stone. Apparently funk is hereditary because Novena Carmel has got the funk. With a tight band full of pushing horns, slapping bass, beautiful vocals, and soul filled drumming I can only hope that Babystone is the start of a new funky revolution.

You can catch Babystone tomorrow night at the Mint

News From Banjo or Freakout

From Spin to RCRD LBL and now handmade CDs for cheap, London’s resident cover master Alessio Natalizia aka Banjo or Freakout is living an independent musician’s fantasy. Having made the amount of consistently unrecognizable, ethereal and beautiful music it would take a stubborn existence not to fall in love with Natalizia’s composition. RCRD LBL has an exclusive track up for download, “72 (Everything Fast)” which you can download here as well as “Mr. No.” With no outlet for the 20 covers made over the past year, including Battles, Amy Winehouse, Burial, Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, Natalizia has just announced:
“After I accomplished my mission to record 20 covers I’ve decided to put them on a CD but then I realized they were too many to fit in just one cd so I’ve decided to do some (11 tracks including Archangel, All I Need, Cable Dazed, Atlas, back to Black, Cape Cod…) here and some on another CD later.
So, here’re they are. Limited to 150 copies, handmade spraypainted freakout artwork.
Get in touch if you fancy one. They are £5 each.
I’m at BANJOORFREAKOUT@GMAIL.COM”
I highly suggest getting one. You can also check out his mention in Spin mag here.

Odd Nosdam Live, anticon news

If you’ve had a hankerin’ for some live Odd Nosdam then look no further. We’ve been hooked up with a 14-minute cassette tape gone digital of Odd Nosdam playing in Oakland with BRE’R. The first seven minutes is BRE’R leaving the second seven for Odd Nosdam, which like his work in cLOUDDEAD will leave you cringing for more. As Odd says, “enjoy the noise.”

New Yorkers, keep an eye out as more information is posted concerning Anticon’s Decade of Debt party at the Knitting Factory December 18.
Everyone, go to Odd’s MySpace page NOW and listen to his remix of Black Moth Super Rainbow’s “Forever Heavy” and The Notwist’s “Sleep.”

‘Tis The Season of Dub

As the weather gets colder and the skies go grayer music points to an epic and dark climax, dubstep. As much as I love dubstep year round there’s nothing quite like walking in a brisk night with a pair of dank headphones blasting Burial or any of Skream’s fantastic mixtapes. A big thanks to Bare Files for hosting so many records and mixes – just follow this link to a South London lover’s anthology of exactly 2,951 mixes made by the likes of Kode9, Plastician, Skream and every other innovator of the genre. If you like what you hear then head over to Bare Dubs and purchase some great vinyl. Here’s a pretty historic moment in Dubstep:

Rock Paper Noah23

“this whole new album is my crossover sellout album”

Like Gym Class Heroes releasing The Papercut Chronicles, Noah23 is a unique voice in hip hop at a crucial point – the crossover sellout album – but what does this mean? Lucky for Noah23 aka the Guelph oracle aka Captain Clark aka Fuzzylogic aka Fulleffect this means more fans and with the coming of 2012, possibly a more enlightened planet to appreciate these tunes. The Ontario native’s latest record, Rock Paper Scissors, dropped on September 23 via his own label, Plague Language, and although it hasn’t received nearly as much press as it should the album has successfully turned heads. Bringing together spot-on cultural references, quick beats and a smooth, warm aesthetic, Noah23 has delivered a very sharp underground hip-hop record that Canada can be damn proud of (along with the rest of his work, notably Quicksand). Nearly an entire album of guest spots ranging from Cadence Weapon to Jim Guthrie I am very enthusiastic in recommending this album, and keep an ear out for a Matrix sample. Check out Noah23’s MySpace here.

New Coconut Records Record, Davy

Ladies and Gentlemen:
I’m excited to write that I just finished recording my new record
It’s called “Davy”

Here is how the kids are reacting to it so far.

More to come,
Jason

Future Declaration

There’s no need for repetition as we all witnessed history tonight. The streets of New York are flooded, cars are honking and the pedestrians are cheering and screaming. Congratulations America.

An album which I’ve been looking forward to came out today and that is Little Joy’s self-titled debut which was recorded in Echo Park, Los Angeles by the elegant Noah Georgeson. If you’re searching for an easy hook on the band, everyone’s favorite Strokes’ member Fabriozio Moretti can be found on just about every instrument along with the infinitely talented Binki Shapiro and Rodrigo Amarante. The production quality is familiar to that of Vampire Weekend’s (production, NOT music) self-titled debut earlier this year and the sound is great to fit into a mixtape with Seu Jorge – although I hope we don’t have a case of the hype-it-till-it-dies bug on our hands. It’s so difficult to choose which song to share, so here’s two.

Will Wiesenfeld, [Post-foetus], Geotic

[Post-foetus] is a regular name on the blog, so I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce what has been happening from the camp of Will Wiesenfeld. After taking some time off to complete The Fabric and go balls out with Nephews, Will has come back in full force via Youtube, Geotic and iTunes. If there has been more recent activity that I’ve missed please leave that information as a comment.

First up is “Gentle Breeze,” under the moniker Geotic.
Will says, “An hour-long track to help you fall asleep, relax,
or whatever else it is you like to do when you listen to this type of stuff.
Enjoy.”
Geotic – Gentle Breeze (via rapidshare)

The Fabric is now available on iTunes. Purchase, review, tell your friends about it and talk about it on your own blog!

You can watch Will creating beauty and setting standards via Youtube.

Finally, [Post-foetus] is coming at us as a full live band featuring Luke Silas (Anamanguchi, Nephews, Dracula Mountain, Yes Means No, The Histories, etc), Mario Luna (Meals for Children, Nephews, The Histories, etc), John Wiesenfeld, Georgia Lill, Jane Kilcullen and of course, Will Wiesenfeld.

I apologize for this mess of a post, have a nice weekend and to echo Cameron, please vote on Tuesday.
