The aide said that guys like me were “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he then defined as “people who believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernable reality.” I nodded and murmured something about Enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create reality. And while you are studying that reality – judiciously, as you will – we’ll act again creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.
-Ron Suskind of the New York Times Magazine on speaking to an unnamed senior adviser to G.W. Bush
If there’s anyone who deserves a great big hug this summer it’s Will Wiesenfeld for the pursuit of [Post-foetus] and developing a sound which encompasses the senses of himself and closest friends. The [Post-foetus] live band including Luke Silas (Anamanaguchi, The Histories, Dracula Mountain, Nephews, etc), Mario Luna (Meals for Children, Nephews, Kingsley, Milk), Georgia Lill, Jane Kilcullen, and John Wiesenfeld opened for Fol Chen at the Echo on June 4 and luckily some very rad videos have surfaced of our personal favorite tune “Weak Will” (above) and the ever-dope “Soundlight” (below). These videos are not to be observed sitting down. Dim the lights, raise the volume, full screen, press play and inhale the essence. More Po-fo videos after the jump including a stunning perspective of “Soonest Moons.” [Post-foetus] will play FMLY’s Beach Dazed on July 28, yesterday we announced that Voxtrot will as well. More updates to come.
The week is SXSW, St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Break, which are three huge reasons to what? Road trip, or as I like to say, Bro Trip.
When the night sets in, drivers on the road wear thin, your pals pass out and you’re battling drowsiness, a great playlist is key towards making it another hundred miles or so. This week’s Flashback! Party Sequence is dedicated to the drivers traversing new territory this week. Good luck, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
To start is one of the greatest travel songs of all time, as dubbed by Wes Anderson. Hot off the Darjeeling Limited soundtrack is the Kinks’ “This Time Tomorrow,” moments this epic can only happen once per day.
Just because an epic Kinks moment can only happen once per day doesn’t mean that these memory-makers are over, we’ve got lots of eras to cover! Another awesome and universal roadtrip tune is the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today.” Yes, the song may be written about suicide, but when you compose a piece that gets as Titanic as this it really belongs to our global society for interpretation, lets just say it’s about a roadtrip that will change your life.
But, as far as road trips go, nothing beats a great time with your pals and, of course, Neil Patrick Harris.
I take off on an 1800mi road trip to SXSW in several hours, so farewell for the next week or so. Gray and Matte will continue to keep your ears occupied.
When it comes to our Los Angeles pals I feel like a mother, I’m just so proud of the music that our FRNDS are making. Santa Cruz/S.F. transplants Koalacaust are no exception, having played with Mischief Brew, Paul Baribeau, and Andrew Jackson Jihad these young men are not only living the anti-folk dream but making some of the dankest tunes around.
The dawning of another edition of LA by way of SF/SC’s Koalacaust is upon us and it comes in the form of an 11-track tale of moving on, enabled youth and unforgettable chapters with titles like “Heath Ledger” and “Caulk The Wagon And Float.”
Finding common ground between Wolf Parade and Blink-182 isn’t easy, and if they could have additionally perfected Elliot Babin’s brand of accordion-pop then we’d have an epic summer tour on our hands. Koalacaust’s stellar recordings manage to capture the spirit of their unforgettable live performances and the anxiety of wanting to hear more. The boys will release the album at their MOCA show this Saturday with Nephews, but until then FMLY would like to premiere another track, “Nubian Ibex.”
From the must-be-a-sing-a-long dynamic of “Resolutions” and “Pg 1″ to the darling breather that “Interlude” provides and the feeling of ‘I just gotta rock out right now’ that “Skyscrapers” and “Heath Ledger” never fail to offer, this entire album is rock solid with genuine balls out jams that need to be experienced by all. Best purchase you can make all year to some of the best guys, if mail is how you need to go about it then contact the band via their MySpace. For more info on Saturday’s show, visit the fbook event. In related Nephnews – pun! – there’s a mysterious LP promo vid after the jump.
‘were heer‘ is an evening music event TONIGHT hosted by FMLY reader and show-goer Dylan Rees from Venice High School and that’s where I will be tonight. What interests me about these West LA house shows is the tendency to follow festival-like procedures. I remember in my freshman and sophomore years of High School house shows were free come in and out as you please events that held ground as more of a friendly get together than an evening musical retreat. From what I’ve noticed the past few years, many of these house shows involve the same folks, but an admission fee has been established as well as a strict schedule, a flyer, a street team and a fundamental line-up which varies from week to week. This evolution is fascinating and in short I’d love it if everyone just had house shows with my favorite bands all of the time and eventually we all just opened up an orgy of a venue – Oakgrove/FMLY/Veritas/Sprawl/Family/etc, lets work in that direction instead of being so separate!
Back to tonight, here is the info:
Dylan Rees’ home can be found at 3483 Barry Ave., 90066 in Los Angeles…Mar Vista to be exact. It’s $5 to get in, but alcohol and drugs are not allowed – this is to ensure that the show doesn’t get shut down by the cops so if you’ve gotta drink, smoke, snort or shoot up then keep it in the car. Actually, don’t. FMLY does not condone in car drug use or drug use for that matter; if it ain’t medicinal then it ain’t for us. Rees has also requested that no one fuck with his fireplace. Here’s the lineup and schedule for the night:
I’ve been physically absent from the LA scene for a couple of years now, but I can place a FMLY guarantee that Geotic, The Histories and Nephews are well worth driving in from Silverlake or Echo Park to see. Nat Love (aka Deadwood Dick) posted their first song on MySpace this week, check it out – featuring Luke Silas (Nephews, Anamanaguchi, Histories, etc) on drums it sounds just like Nephews minus an intense Will Wiesenfeld driven bass part. See ya’ll there.
This line-up really couldn’t speak to us more. I believe this will be Mario Luna’s (Meals for Children, The Histories, Nephews, etc) first show as Kingsley and I’m not sure what Family of Ghosts is, but my best guess is something to do with The Histories. Make sure not to miss this and check out the artists below.
Speaking of The Histories, Reid and Maxwell have thrown up a new song, “Like Lions,” on the Reid and Maxwell MySpace. Both approach vocals differently in this tune; Reid’s falsettos are stronger than ever and Maxwell’s voice…well I can’t even describe the transformation it’s taking. As with the the rest of their work, check it out.
Don’t forget that [Post-foetus] is playing the FMLY House Show tomorrow in Echo Park. More info to the right of this page.
Recently blogged about Philip Seymour Hoffman has dropped a live open practice. “For an entire week we jammed in my apartment using a Hello Kitty toaster, pots&pans, fender telecaster w/ the pod xt, acoustic guitar, midiman oxygen8 keyboard and an m-audio trigger finger…of course with recreational drugs and whatever could spontaneously be used as an instrument. I pressed record on my mac and here are the raw sounds which we made. Over the past few days I have done minor editing which includes looping the guitar, adding a couple of affected vocal tracks and distorting the electric guitar into a continuous running sound.”
Finally, I’ll be landing in Los Angeles this week and I’m staying until the 20th, so if anyone wants to talk new Animal Collective or just chill then drop a comment or email.
What! FMLY was on the Prefix site!? Nice! Anyways, I’m just gonna plug a show that should really speak for itself. Railcars (Aria C Jalali) is playing a show in LA at The Smell with our beloved Nephews. I’m not familiar with Knight Rider or Felt Drawings but I’m assuming that they are just as rad. If you’re in town and don’t make your way here then I will personally prevent you from buying the new Animal Collective. Face that reality!
With Halloween a little over a week away, I’ve decided it’s time to carefully consider my options of what to do on Halloween. There are a lot of tantalizing options. Here’s what I’m considering:
First of all FMLY favs Rumspringa are playing a Helluva show. Halloween Downtown starts at 8 and goes till I can’t dance anymore. Also I get $10 off just for dressing up on Halloween and it would give me a good reason to check out BOXeight.
Little Radio is having a truly ghoulish night where Autolux among others will be playing. There is also a haunted house (?!) and a costume contest. Knowing Little Radio, there will be plenty of surprises as well.
The bands that inspired the start of FMLY will be playing as some of their favorite bands featuring Nephews as Jimmy Eats World, and members of Yes Means No, Dracula Mountain and Bro Nameth.
With such great options, I’m just not sure what to do.
A while back Nephews played on FMLY Radio. Now you can download those recordings for free off of Little Radio. Just click here to take a listen and download.
As you may already know, Nephews played a live set on FMLY radio last week. For those of you unfamiliar with Nephews, they are a three piece instrumental band from LA known for their high energy shows and mystery. They are the body on American Football with the balls of Hella.
A couple of the recordings from the performance are up on their myspace and Split the Dribble is up for download! Check out Positive Stack as well. Their other recordings aren’t great quality so if you really want to rock out listen to the Little Radio live recordings and go see them live.
Nephews played a live set on FMLY Radio (Little Radio) this morning, if you missed the show you can catch the mp3z when we post them. My memory is a bit shot, but the post-rock outfit played about a four or five song set that I more than enjoyed. From the song that started it all, “Chess Teacher,” to the newest of new, “Sorefinger Road,” Nephews played a powerhouse set of cutting edge music. If you did tune in and heard Luke’s proposal of “Drug Lips,” let the band know what you think through a MySpace message.
New Nephews everyone! FMLY post-rock outfit Nephews have added a new track to their MySpace, “Sorefinger Road,” which was recorded live at The Knitting Factory. You can stream the track on the band’s page, right here.
