we are fmly

This weekend in LA is FMLY filled. Of course we have the FMLY RIDE on Saturday with a westside ride meeting the eastside ride and the new edition of FMLY RIDE Santa Cruz happening simultaneously. The theme for this ride is Cowboys (Eastside) and Indians (Westside). You can find all of the info for that here. The day before we will be creating a ruckus at the Standard Hotel in Hollywood as we team up with our pals at Dubfrequency to bring you a wild night of animal carnage. FMLY veteran DJDT will be bumping that sexy style he roles deep in and Riplee, one of the founding members of FMLY will be making his return. If you were at my birthday party earlier this year at McWorld, you saw him and DJ ALASKA, who will also be bringing the party, killing it all night long. Come dressed as your favorite animal. Word has it that the safari ride will be ending here to so prepare yourselves Hollywood! We are going to take you and we aren’t going to be merciful. It’s free to get in if you RSVP here so why wouldn’t you come!

Yo, we’re premiering a couple of new DJDT tracks today as well as announcing a remix contest for one of Robert’s other projects, The Exes. The first track to gently pull the sheet off of is an M.I.A. remix of “Jimmy” crafted by Robert that although extremely pleasant to listen to and way more awesome for the purposes of raging has this off-putting affect that I find oh so appealing. Super rad remix dude, and that’s coming from a guy that did not dig Kala.

Second new tune was made by DJDT apprentice Noah Diamond aka the long haired dude with the camera that is also named Noah. Perhaps you’ve confused us on facebook? It’s called “Buttons” and if the lil’ bro is making music this crotch-moving at 16 (17?) 15 (thanks robert) I don’t even want to think about what’ll happen when he’s out of high school and Ableton 9 is out. Stay in school, don’t do drugs, be no baby’s daddy, etc…

Now for the contest. The Exes want you to remix their music or reimagine their tunes however your heart desires. Their fav gets posted to their MySpace and you get two free tickets to any FMLY show! Send your finished product to noah@thefmly.com and I’ll shoot ‘em over to the band. Here are the acapellas:

my HARD’s gone soft

We were required to shut down Hard Summer at The Forum last night by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. They declared the event a “hazard” after seeing concertgoers jumping from the balcony to the floor, along with numerous other potentially dangerous activities. The Inglewood Police Department backed the decision of the Fire Department and assisted in the clearance of the venue.

While we, the promoters, worked with the authorities to consider other options to continue the concert, ultimately they made the decision based on the safety of the concertgoers. We are happy to report that there were no major injuries.

We are offering refunds to all concertgoers.

anticipation...

anticipation...

The last words said by Hard Officials after a heart wrenching disappointment – HARD was officially shut down by the Los Angeles Fire Department all before midnight.

As I made my way unto the night and into Inglewood for LA’s HARD SUMMER FEST, I could feel the good vibes waving in the air. Candy bracelets here, and fury boots there. The creators of HARD Fest have really built a strong community of loyal fans.

I circled the Forum on foot three to four times, finding lines and lines of people waiting to get in. Finally, I got to will call to pick up my tickets. Now, the wait to get in. In the crowds of lines that didn’t seem to be moving, I suddenly see 50-60 fans  jolt in blurred figures right past me yelling, “RUSH!” They took down one of the fences and bum-rushed the security for a quick and easy way in (I was too slow to react with them).

After an hour, “YES I’M IN. Wait, I missed Crystal Castles?” “No worries, but where’s the music? No one is dancing, everyone’s a bit uneasy, how do I get down to the floor?” -thoughts that crossed my mind after two hours of waiting for Chromeo to come on.

In those few hours, I saw how this night folded out…more after the jump

M.I.A. IS PREGNANT

M.I.A. unveiled a larger stomach at the Diesel Anniversary party last night in NYC. This actually explains a lot such as her sudden “retirement,” a cancellation of her European tour and her engagement to Benjamin Brewer. Best wishes Maya. Oh yeah, Hot Chip served as Chaka Kahn’s backing band last night, that couldn’t go unsaid.

MF Doomed

MF Doom fans rejoice for Doomed has dropped. The 156MB mixtape prominently features the man in mask’s verse from De La Soul’s “Rock Co. Cane Flow” over Diplo’s Clash sample made internationally known by M.I.A.. C’mon guys, lets here some originality! Download here.

"Paper Planes" on Drums

I’m not sure if this is a Youtube sensation yet, but I keep seeing videos of this same kid drumming to everything from Underoath to M.I.A.. Here’s his video for “Paper Planes” making this around the 400th version available online.

Esau Mwamwaya Finishes Album With M.I.A., Vampire Weekend And Others

[Esau with Ezra of Vampire Weekend]

Malawi by-way-of London musician Esau Mwamwaya is certainly a name to pay attention to in 2008. Announced via a MySpace blog by Radioclit member Johan, the album that EVERYONE has been waiting for is complete, “hopefully a good lisence deal will be in place very soon and the madness can begin!!” The album features collaborations with Santogold, M.I.A. and Vampire Weekend just to name a few, I can’t wait to hear more as the album finds a release. If you’re in London or will be tomorrow, make sure to stop by the Notting Mill Arts Club to check out Radioclit and Esau Mwamwaya live.

What I love so much about Esau are his uplifting and inspiring interpretations of contemporary music. The tracks below feature Esau singing over the beats of Architecture In Helsinki’s “Heart It Races” and M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes.” Sporting one of the smoothest voices I’ve ever heard, it’s quite alright that I have no clue what he is saying.

Santogold at Virgin

[thanks Rafe Baron]
Alright, so I’m in love with Santogold, I believe in Santogold, I want to be Santogold’s best friend…if M.I.A. and Rose hadn’t both taken that position. After catching Santi’s set at Coachella I was blown away by her charisma and the expression within her voice – it is as if she has an endless range that can extend as far as ears can hear. Last night at the Virgin Store was absolutely no different, her beautifully written world influenced pop was the perfect touch to a Tuesday night. Performing much of the same set that she did at Coachella, Santi was filled with an energy as if she had never let anyone hear these songs before. “I waited a really fucking long time to release this album,” she tells a starstruck crowd, “but it was all worth it, dance!” You can catch Santi and the crew on tour in England come May – if you’ swing from that part of the ocean.

NYC Show News

Forgive me if any of this information is incorrect – I’ve just waited 40 minutes for a subway, had a bit to drink and danced for hours at Studio B to Health and Crystal Castles. In the news…

Columbia has announced their annual spring concert, this year it will be The National and Grizzly Bear. As a plus and minus, “The Bwog” has claimed that from a very official anonymous source they have heard the concert will take place indoors (laaaaaaaame) for $5 (tight!!). If you were at the annual Fall concert with Vampire Weekend and Clipse, that’s what’s in store – good bands, shitty obnoxious Justice obsessed DJ as filler.

If you’ve been in NY for a while then you should be familiar with the McCarren Park Pool, a legendary historical pool that has been empty for a couple of decades. Well…the pool is being filled but this hasn’t stopped the concert flow! M.I.A. and Holy Fuck have signed on as the first confirmed acts this summer to take place on June 6. Tickets go on sale March 29.

Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.

Fantasy DJing

Alright, so I’ve been thinking and at this particular moment I’d say that my three favorite remixers are Diplo, DJ Sega and XXXChange although I’m positive that I’m leaving some very important people out. In addition to that I’d say that my DJ hero would be Franki Chan and Diplo in second. If there was a fantasy DJ/remix artist site then that would be my all-star line-up. In honor of this friday night with Anamanaguchi playing all weekend long, I’ll give you something that we all love – a little M.I.A. “Paper Planes” action with a remix by DJ Sega.
