I fell in love with Lymbyc Systym last year after the homie Ben Danger burnt me Love Your Abuser just in time to get excited for the release of their Field Studies split with This Will Destroy You. We’ve spoken about them here and there over time so no need to fill you in with the boring ‘I’m such a fanboy’ details. Just know that Shutter Release is out on November 3 and that if you’re not down then you probably do look fat in those jeans. Here’s a new tune!

If you’ve ever caught Deerhunter then you’ve certainly seen the eye candy standing next to Moses, and I’m not talking about Bradford…this time. The boy’s name is Lockett and Lotus Plaza is his game, filling the heads of America’s youth with auralgasms and landscapes that are quite painful not to experience tangibly. Lockett broke out a performance last night in the ATL at Eyedrum and ohhhh myyyyy looooord these sounds are uplifting. Long story short: download below. Thanks Deerhuntblogger.

tunes of the night

The aide said that guys like me were “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he then defined as “people who believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernable reality.” I nodded and murmured something about Enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create reality. And while you are studying that reality – judiciously, as you will – we’ll act again creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.

This Will Destroy You – The World Is Our

This Will Destroy You

This Will Destroy You follows the path of Texas’ instrumental post-rock lineage. You may recognize the band from the recently released Field Studies, their split with a band I’ve mentioned here before, Lymbyc Systym. TWDY has one album and one EP under their belts with hopefully many more of each to follow. If you’re building the soundtrack to the most epic moments of your life, This Will Destroy You should certainly be on it…unless you’ve never lived.

This Will Destroy You – The World Is Our

Lymbyc Systym

My friend Ben recently turned me onto brothers Mike and Jared Bell of Arizona/Austin/Brooklyn (?), who are currently making music under the name Lymbyc Systym. Daytrotter describes LS as, “sounds like prophecy ringing in from the timbers, smoking in from the highland fires and buzzing in as if it was a well-meaning tattle-tale, giving it to us straight, but also with inflections and adornments that we’d comment upon later to our close friends and family members were all very lovely touches.” The term post-rock is reaching a boundary because I don’t feel correct brushing them under that umbrella. LS use their share of glitched out vocal samples, but what really makes the music is the contrast between a low frequency bass and glockenspiel versus drums and piano. Weaving different textures of track in one ear and out the other Lymbyc Systym are surely heading down envious roads, especially with their awesome album art. Having opened in the past for Her Space Holiday, Crystal Castles, The One AM Radio and The Album Leaf it won’t be long before they stroll through your town, if you happen to be in Austin January 31 then make sure to catch LS at Bass Concert Hall with our heroes Broken Social Scene.
