So we all know the first Saturday of the month is the FMLY RIDE. In March our FMLY in Santa Cruz took to the streets in their first (and very fun) FMLY RIDE. Now on April 3rd, we will be riding with our FMLY in LA (eastside and westside), Santa Cruz and San Francisco with bands in each city and the FMLY love we all thrive from. If you are interested in starting a FMLY RIDE in your city, shoot me over an email and we can help make it a reality. Who knows! There might be some people in your city who are already working on it… You can email me at cameron@thefmly.com.
Remember: These rides are fun but they are also for us to take a different look at the cities we live in. Our urban landscape can be used in very positive ways that make everyone happier. When you are at a FMLY event, you represent FMLY. Don’t tag your name, leave trash, piss people off… This is about love and respect. If you don’t know what I am really talking about when I talk about FUN, check out this video. It does a pretty great job of explaining the principles of FUN.

Nicole Kidman is not only one hell of an Australian actress, but the alias for one special Angelino. Jon Barba sings so close to the heart that I’m questioning my understanding of what a breast pocket really is, for if I’m not carrying my affection deep inside then what good is it? In addition to the heartful jams I’m overly appreciative to Jon for supporting my belief of honesty over virtuosity as my body trembles upon hearing his voice shake. Let the good virtue left in this world find Nicole Kidman and 2012 will surely be a period of enlightenment. Jon has quite a number of shows coming up, hit up the myspace for more info.

Hollywood is not only a collective resting ground for many of Los Angeles’ homeless, aspiring actors and setting for many an awesome tale from Bukowski, but also serves as a dream factory where myths, legends and icons are produced. Before our culture industry was outsourced to foreign environments like Japan and Taiwan, it was Hollywood which developed the impossible cool and made the great depression much less depressing…well, jazz deserves some credit as well. When you walk those sticky and filthy streets, remember the holy ground which once was.
Holy Holy Hollywood fabricates a montage of dreams in the glossed-over fashion that soap operas are so fond of. Arranging easy listening melodies based on a solid structure, Andy’s stories are those which free float and develop rich branches from the emotive strumming of his guitar and expressive nature of his voice. It’s hard to talk about Holy Holy Hollywood without comparison to the sounds and vibes of the 60s and 70s, so lets just go drop acid by the Hollywood sign instead and appreciate the subtleties of folks like Andy and Jeremy Enigk.

Hey New York, I’ve got tickets for the givin’ for you to go to the Natural History Museum this Friday and catch a riddim heavy night of DJ Rupture, Matt Shadetek, Jahdan Blakkamore, Maluca, and Sonido Martines. You’ve gotta be 21+ or have one rad fake ID, so if you want to go shoot an email to noah@thefmly.com with your favorite exhibit at the Natural History museum. If you’ve never been then tell me that and I will probably just give you the tickets right off the bat. I’ll randomly pick the recipients on Thursday.

Hey, so tonight is a rare occasion where we have an event on both coasts – the best coast and the right coast, can you guess which is which?
In Los Angeles is the FMLY ride with the homies Professor Calculus, Insects vs Robots (next time) and Restavrant. You can read more about that awesome party of a day ‘n’ night right here. In Brooklyn, FMLY’s Philip Seymour Hoffman will be playing a set of new tunes off the forthcoming The Lighthouse Itself Is The Rocket (Breakfast of Champs) with our good pals Total Slacker who we caught last night at the Cake Shop. If you’re in the city, head over to the Charleston in Williamsburg tonight at 8:30. We know nothing about the place but regardless, good times are to be had with good frnds! See you somewhere.

The MTA rapid on Wilshire is one of the most heavily used bus routes in the city of Los Angeles. After staring at the 720 Timetable + Route(PDF) dozens of times, it became pretty clear that there’s no reason why the bikeways in the city can’t be modeled after where I, a cyclist, want to go on a daily basis. Not the slow, residential route, but the quickest, major thoroughfare route. I find it funny that so much money continues to be earmarked for drawing up the bestest LA Bike Plan possible, when we could easily look at the MTA maps which are most likely modeled after where people want to go.
I’m sure MTA does population density studies, why replicate all that work? Let’s put our LADOT thinking caps on. One of the reasons, I assume, is to keep cyclists away from the sacred major thoroughfare pavement that God has given to Cars. Well, I have bidness to attend to, I deserve the same or better pathway than a car, since, after all, hands down, I am the most efficient vehicle out there on the street.

If you’ve never been the FAMILY shop in Los Angeles, toss it on your list of things to do before you die. Carrying an abundance of cassettes, zines, comics, foreign films, and all else you can name including good conversation, FAMILY has undoubtedly become one of our more popular subculture hangouts ranking alongside the Smell and Amoeba – and it takes more than an article from an esteemed newspaper or blog to pull that off!
To clear the air, no, FMLY has no relation to FAMILY and it didn’t even cross our minds early on. And yes, we get that question a lot. A hero of ours, Lance Bangs – whom you should remember being portrayed by another hero, Philip Seymour Hoffman, in Almost Famous – has made a series of short documentaries concerning the music world entitled “Bangs.” In the video above (part 1), Bangs gives a close up of FAMILY and introduces the world to curator and cartoonist Sammy Harkham, David Jacob Kramer and bands like No Age and Lavender Diamond. Part 1 above, the rest right here.

Come out come out, Los Angeles! Our Anamanabros are back in town and FMLY promised to show them a good time…you don’t even want to know what the arrangement is if they don’t crack a smile by the end of the night. Showing love for the evening are LA’s own TRS-80, NEON NAVAJO and Professor Calculus! This is the homie Luke Silas’ first tour and we’re hosting his ‘you’re at home muhfuckah’ party so come dressed to get wrecked.

So I went to Rock the Bells Saturday, it was hot. Besides the fact that that statement could work the two ways I wanted it too, there’s something about San Bernardino County in general that usually brings a sepia image of downtrodden industry and smog, not to mention horrendous traffic and douchebags. So when I went to visit San Manuel Theater for the first time in 7 years with this predisposition (last time I was there I was a very young punk kid trying to see the Sex Pistols), I didn’t know what to expect. The place is nestled in a beautiful little park (Pictured below at the Paid Dues side stage). Other than the beauty of the scenery, I have a bone to pick with another aspect of this festival, read the review to find out after the jump. (more pictures too!)

“Hey all-
I can’t put into words how excited I am to announce this year’s line up for the FYF Fest (Formerly F Yeah Fest). I don’t want to write much. Would rather have the line up speak for its self. It’s gonna be a blast. Hope you can make it out.
Love,
Sean Carlson and the FYF Fest
