I’d like to thank some of my favorite Los Angeles locals – Vibes, Pocahaunted, Pizza!, and Magic Lantern – for delivering one of the greatest shows that I’ve had the honor of witnessing and luckily being a part of. Thank you to Not Not Fun for being the best and thank you to those who were there, and followed the show to the resulting house portion of the night for Magic Lantern. Finally, thank you to the Museum of Neon Art in Downtown LA, you’re the sweetest group of folks! Review after the jump and pictures to come one day…

Fresh jams from both Wavves and Windsurf can be found on the tenth installment of the FADER/Southern Comfort 7″ series. The art is by Mario Hugo and both mp3s can be found here – Wavves below.
As Wavves, San Diegan Nathan Williams has been busy tearing up 2009 like a half pipe with his noise-drenched bubblegum. He scrawled down his lo-fi anthem “Friends Were Gone” in a couple of hours over broken drums. Windsurf’s track “Vapour Trails” contrasts nicely with a laidback instrumental groove appropriate for, say, spending the afternoon on your boat. Though what really pushes this track straight into full-on lounge is the island boogie percussion. [via]
Speaking of Wavves, it wasn’t long before his influence went south of the border, literally. Juavves has recorded this Summer’s hit, “Muy Aburrido.” Check it here.
Bill Callahan performing “All Thoughts Are Prey to Some Beast” and “Let Me See the Colts,” live from Other Music on Record Store Day.
If there’s anything that Matt & Kim needed, it was another reason for me to whole-heartedly love ‘em. After streaking through Times Square in their latest video, “Lessons Learned,” it looks like Matt was assaulted by a police officer and Kim was hit by a bus. Considering their recent appearance in Los Angeles I’m going to say those two incidents shouldn’t be worried about. Enjoy!
So this was all of ten days in the making, sorry for the wait (transcribing is a bitch). This show was held on March 25th at a local living room dubbed ‘The Pink Mailbox.’ I want to say thank you to the Homosexuals, PRE, and the Mae Shi for bringing another epic night to our nice little sublet. What follows is three drunken interviews (i patched them up to sound intelligent – more to save my ass from looking like an idiot) from
Jon from The Mae Shi / Bruno Wizard / Keex from PRE
As I sit down here on this Sunday morning, eating my granola and sipping my OJ, I find little that could describe the show I witnessed last night besides my newly discovered favorite word – Synaesthesia. Synaesthesia is defined as a phenomenon where the firing of certain sensory neurons lead to simultaneous firing of other sensory neurons – that’s smelling sound, tasting touch, or seeing colors. From the beginning of the Tubers set I felt my body shake as sound reverberated itself through a tingly sensation only furthered by the not-too-much-discussed electro pop echoes of Railcars and finally the horrifying surf sweat of Monsters from Mars.

Santa Barbara doesn’t get many good small venue bands coming through, so when No Age appeared on the concert calendar I got excited. I had been trying to catch the duo somewhere in their hometown but failed miserably each time and the welcomed relief of no two hour drives made sure this show would be worth while.

The thing about Animal Collective is it’s a labor of love. The subtleties of each song take time to pull out; though once out, the listener is transported to a place where harmony and melody follow rules not yet fully tested. This came to me after seeing “Blue Sky” for the first time (I purposely never listened to it online to get the new-song-concert-vibe from it.) Early on in the song I was lost with conflicting melodies, following the sample but trying to understand Avey’s lyricism as well. About half way through something clicked and the melodies met up in a disjunct beauty that grabbed hold of my body and transfixed my thoughts on the juxtaposed harmonies that seemingly caught up with one another, only to build through each other. This was only the fourth song of the set, a set that was delayed over a month, only allowing those who cared to build the anticipation up to the cathartic release that is known as Animal Collective.

Here are a couple of songs from Why’s live performance at the Natural History Museum. Look for an interview soon!
