If you’ve never been the FAMILY shop in Los Angeles, toss it on your list of things to do before you die. Carrying an abundance of cassettes, zines, comics, foreign films, and all else you can name including good conversation, FAMILY has undoubtedly become one of our more popular subculture hangouts ranking alongside the Smell and Amoeba – and it takes more than an article from an esteemed newspaper or blog to pull that off!
To clear the air, no, FMLY has no relation to FAMILY and it didn’t even cross our minds early on. And yes, we get that question a lot. A hero of ours, Lance Bangs – whom you should remember being portrayed by another hero, Philip Seymour Hoffman, in Almost Famous – has made a series of short documentaries concerning the music world entitled “Bangs.” In the video above (part 1), Bangs gives a close up of FAMILY and introduces the world to curator and cartoonist Sammy Harkham, David Jacob Kramer and bands like No Age and Lavender Diamond.
