She’s worked with legendary Ry Cooder, sings with polar opposites The Bird and the Bee and Puscifer, is the sister of Robert Francis, rocks the keytar and is heading towards round two of a solo record. Know who she is yet? If you don’t you should: this lovely lady is Juliette Commagere, and she’s playing the FMLY stage at the Abbot Kinney Festival boys and girls! Her first solo album came out in 2008 and is filled with her angelic vocals and deep electric orchestrations. We’re on the edges of our seats waiting for her next album, and we got a little bit of time to chat with her about the whole risky process of “going solo.”
Juliette Commagere- Hearts
FMLY: Getting excited for the Abbot Kinney Festival?
Juliette: Yeah, I am excited. I think it’ll be really nice, you know? I’m pretty sure haven’t ever played in Venice. So it’s something new.
F: So how’s your solo stuff been going lately?
J: It’s been going really well and I’m about to start working on my second record. I’ve kinda been in writing mode and just trying to get in the right mindset to go in the studio and start the whole process all over again. So its equal parts all the pressure I put on myself and that I’m also excited.
Juliette Commagere- Overcome
F: Do you find that you like writing or performing better?

FMLY is ecstatic and honored to present our hometown neighborhood with our very own stage stage at the 25th anniversary of the Abbot Kinney Festival. We grew up attending this festival every year, Cameron’s parents once lived on Abbot Kinney and back in the day the street served as our skateboard highway for getting to the Windward Circle. We thank everyone who has made this possible, so come out and party!
If this is your first Abbot Kinney fest, it is FREE so come out and show support for the community while indulging in everything we have to offer. We will also be announcing something that we’re super pumped about as the date approaches.

You might remember our Friends Pizza! from this week’s Public Education playlist as well as Beach Dazed and the Museum of Neon Art show a while back (memory refresher here). Well the boys have just joined Manimal Vinyl’s already awesome roster for the release of their second EP in 2010. On October 5th Manimal will be releasing a digital only compilation of Pizza!’s best stuff. “The release will include fifteen remastered favorites, representing all of our official releases and including a couple of other goodies.” In preparation for this new life for Pizza! They must remove their free discography from their site on Monday, September 21. This leaves us all with one more week to grab all those years of music for free.

To really welcome Pizza! to the Manimal crew, they were added to Manimal Festival in Pioneer Town, which I was already wetting myself over, joining Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Rainbow^Arabia, Fool’s Gold, Juliette Commagere and many others. I can’t think of any better way to spend $30 and a weekend than in the desert in an old movie set listening to some of the best music LA has to offer.

It’s not easy to think about in this heat right now but next month when it’s a little cooler, it’ll be time to mozy on out to Pioneertown in Joshua Tree for Manimal Vinyl’s second MANIMAL FESTVAL! It couldn’t take place in a cooler location. Pioneertown “started as a live-in Old West motion picture set, built in the 1940s. The movie set was designed to provide a place for the actors to live, and at the same time to have their homes used as part of the movie set” [via]. The desert and this line up combine offers nothing less than a religous experence.
