jeffrey lewis & fmly: part three

Here it is, the final portion of our chill sesh with Jeffrey Lewis in October sportin’ quite the history lesson. Thank you to Jeff and his brother and Schwervon! for being so accommodating and sweet. At the end of the video you can hear Jeff’s brother in the other room recording vocals on some way new and unheard tracks that we can’t even comprehend right now.

jeffrey lewis & fmly: part 1

Cameron and I had the pleasure of borrowing the way sweet Jeffrey Lewis yesterday during a recording session of some of his post-Em Are I tunes. Here’s part one of three! Below is a screenshot from part three of Jeff sporting one of our unique handmade FMLY baby masks which you can pick up at our bike ride next Saturday or at any FMLY show, I personally made this one titled “Baby Manhattan” modeling Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan. Other folks who have made masks include Cop Magnet, EASYBOY, Elliott DeCesare, Saraswathi, Cameron and a heap more pals!

Music Musick and Muzak

“round the world like a yo-yo walk ya dog fetch. connect four, spectacular in a scrabble session. paper airplanes turn your jenga into 9/11. we stay hungry just like hippos. counting monopoly money, we’re fuckin’ rich yo.”

Noah23 recently gave an album of rarities from this year away via MySpace. Here’s the mediafire link and I highly recommend the download. Noah23 continues to fascinate me, especially with his open admittance of how drugs affect his music and his unusual hippie upbringing [for a Canadian]. His cultural references are spot on and for those who haven’t began listening to his music I suggest you do so.

Don’t forget to pick up a copy of Rock Paper Scissors from thecatacombz.com or hold off until the vinyl is released. There are some really sick beats and flows, but I’ve still gotta recommend Quicksand to any fan of modern versatile hip-hop.

An album I never talked about this year is Dosh’s Wolves and Wishes released in May via anticon. With contributions from Bonnie ’Prince’ Billy, Andrew Bird, Fog, Odd Nosdam and the usual suspects, Mike Lewis and Jeremy Ylvisaker. A FMLY review of the album will be up relatively soon, but if you haven’t had a chance to check out the album it makes a great holiday gift. Visit the DoshFMLY website here and pick up some cheap CD’s, vinyl and other goodies.

Don’t forget to listen to Alice’s Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie today. After all, it’s Thanksgiving!

And lastly, Jeffrey Lewis has made a history of Rough Trade video that I highly recommend. Check it out!

FMLY isn’t really that Thanksgiving festive, but we certainly enjoy a great homecooked meal. Have a great dinner everyone and if you get something out of it then more power to ya. I’ll be a bit outside of New York City in Warwick romping around in the forest if anyone wants to come join. Don’t forget to RSVP to our event we’ve overwhelmed you with HERE.

Belaire Tours

Remember Voxtrot? Apparently bassist Jason Chronis (top right) has been double-dipping into another band since ‘05, Belaire, and it looks as though the balancing act has paid off. Bringing their pop-infused electronic jams across the country, Belaire is on the verge of some serious blog love. If you’re in New York, go check out Belaire as they open for wordsmith Jeffrey Lewis at The Cake Shop. I don’t have any mp3’s to share, but please take a listen to Belaire’s MySpace and watch the music video – created by bandmember Danny Reisch’s little sister – for “You Really Got Me Goin’” below. If you like what you hear, check out friends of Belaire, Bear Claws, and enjoy their lighthearted minimalist folk music that Austin, Texas produces so well.

Jeffrey Lewis On Crass

Maybe you’ve seen the Jeffrey Lewis stickers around Williamsburg? Well, if you’ve been curious as to who this christmas colored mystery man is, he is one of you. Lewis is an anti-folk artist from New York fitting into a genre somewhere between The Moldy Peaches and Why?. Actually, he has collaborated with Kimya Dawson and gone on tour with Adam Green, both of The Moldy Peaches. If you’re having a slow Tuesday, but some Jeffrey Lewis and the hours will just fly by. His most recent release is an album entirely of Crass songs rewritten to fit his anti-folk style. Crass is an old British punk band whose lyrics still ring true today.
