dust off the cobwebs

Big ups to BJ Rubin, currently of Puttin on the Ritz, for sharing a one day classic that is sure to warm your heart and all else if the sun hasn’t gotten to it already. I see BJ at a good number of great shows as he’s usually the guy standing right by me talking to the band and until stumbling upon his blog (that has a .org?) it seemed like he was friends was everyone, now it’s confirmed, he is friends with everyone. Thanks for letting me grab some shade from your umbrella at Fort Tilden last weekend man. And an extended thanks for this early CD.

As you may not have guessed, with the good word of his pal Rob Barber BJ has tossed up the earliest of High Places demos around. This couldn’t have come at a better time as High Places produce groovy summer loving sounds and with their recent move to Los Angeles to begin recording their second album we’ve become pretty antsy for unfamiliar places.

“We wanted to do a band we thought was noise music, rooted in punk, but that somehow had a smile on it’s face. We wanted to be super loud and weird, but we wanted to be at emotional odds with all the other loud noisy bands in Brooklyn. I guess being punk, or going against the grain to us meant to try to approach experimental or noise music in a densely shrouded warmer pop based approach, but still being weird and loud. Come to think of it, I guess that still is the impetus for us as we begin to write our sophomore album. But we still like to break the rules.” (Rob)

Head over to Pukekos to read more of Rob’s early High Places memories and download the 6-song demo. You should probably bookmark the site as well, it’s certainly one of the strongest music-based sites out there as BJ is friends with a large percentage of folks whom we love and tends to get a direct word out from them. Again, big ups dude.

Tonight in LA

The day is finally here. High Places is TONIGHT at The Echo. It’s going to be a sweaty euphoric dance party and if you aren’t there, you will regret it. Next time High Places rolls through, it might not be so intimate. Tickets will be available at the door or you can get them here.

Intricate Machines

This is a band that understands that force feeding pop is not always the best route to take. Intricate Machines brings something new to dreamy pop bringing in more subtleties. Every time I listen to their IM EP I start to notice more and although they remind me of a lot of other bands (Radiohead, Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Beach House) they bring a lot more to the table. If you are looking to chill out, watch a day at the beach with old film or have a montage drive through the forest where you think about your life, throw on some Intricate Machines. You can check them out at their two free upcoming LA shows.

Cred Report: Lucky Dragons

[High Places, Soft Circle, Lucky Dragons and Hawnay Troof collaborative acoustic set in a creek bed next to a crater. Berkeley/Oakland Hills, CA. via]

I realize I’ve never given out mad cred to some artists who seriously deserve it. Lucky Dragons are without a doubt pushing boundaries within their realm of dronish computer trance. If that doesn’t make sense it’s chill because it’s incredibly difficult to describe the sounds heard on Dream Island Laughing Language. To take an easy route they could be dubbed “a West Coast version of Brooklyn’s High Places” [via], but that’s not creative, that’s not original and unique, that’s High Places and not Lucky Dragons. Where’s the magic of originality and the air of expression that Luke Fischbeck deserves!? On his – now their – eighteenth release, which to be fair was officially released in May via Marriage Recs, these Lucky Dragons get more compression, more organic and more badittude making for one creatively crafted experimental release. I’m proud to say that Sara and Luke reside in Los Angeles and put on some incredible shows that I caught over summer. They’ll be going on a full tour of the US in January and February and it’s up to you to book it for them! If you want to see Lucky Dragons in your town, playing your house and sleeping on your floor then contact them asap and tell ‘em FMLY sent you: angryclouds_k@yahoo.com

“Live, Fischbeck breaks down the barrier between audience and band by conducting his concerts as workshop-style situations. “Complement Song” (2006) implores audience members to compliment each other. The Make a Baby project (2005– ) generates sound based on skin-to-skin contact: via conductive sensors knit into tapestries or handheld tubes and wired to his computer, Fischbeck “meaningfully interprets” frequencies sent through participants’ physical interaction into a series of digital feedback loops. As audience members surround Fischbeck or hold hands to stay connected, determining the crowd’s visual organization, he also distills these signals into animated representations of human motion that appear on a screen as colorful moving patterns. Microcosmic realizations of the artist’s stated desire for a world “free of irony,” the sincerely cultivated, loving environments Lucky Dragons creates with every project empower the individual, reminding listeners of our ability to effect change in other social arenas.” [Trinie Dalton, via]

To make this short and sweet, Lucky Dragons, we’re lucky to have you.
Catch ‘em December 6 at the Echo Curio in Los Angeles and December 11 and 12 in NY. Tour dates can be found here as well as information concerning releases and other interesting tidbits.
