*FIRST 100 COPIES ON CLEAR VINYL* The long awaited vinyl version of Liz Harris’s debut solo album. Gorgeous whirpools of vocals and tape noise make this one of the most magical records you could possibly imagine! [via type records]
We don’t keep our feelings for Grouper a secret, in fact, I sent an email to Liz Harris a few days ago letting her know what she means to the FMLY. As you can peep from the excerpt above, Harris’ debut solo album Way Their Crept has been reissued. It’s not as often as we’d like that we’re struck with an awe of originality, yet Harris consistently leaves us baffled as her sounds express traits so minimal, yet so psychedelic, yet so ambient; her albums find no common ground but express a range of styles. “Beneath the whirlpools of ambience and tape hiss there is an untouched beauty waiting to be discovered. “ You can currently catch Grouper on tour with Animal Collective. Download Way now through Sunday here for $2.99.

Considering that many members of the FMLY are in college and we’re nearing finals, it’s important to create a playlist to keep you up during those all-nighters. I won’t divulge what is on my personal playlist coughfalloutboycough, but here are some excellent tunes to keep you up and atom for whatever it is you’re up studying for…not like it’s 2:00pm here or anything and I still haven’t passed out. Instead of going way of posting awesome sleep related tunes like Grouper, Bonobo or early Arcade Fire, this is more of an uptempo grouping of songs to pass the time until sunrise.
We Never Sleep, We’re Not Weak Mixtape
Matt & Kim – Don’t Slow Down
Flying Lotus – Sleepy Dinosaur
Height With Friends – Standing Up Asleep
The Joggers – Wicked Light Sleeper
Milk – The Battle of Sleeping Tonics
No Age – I Wanna Sleep
of Montreal – At Night Trees Aren’t Sleeping
Rafter – Sleazy Sleepy
Santo and Johnny – Sleepwalk
Simian Mobile Disco – Sleep Deprivation
Voxtrot – Fast Asleep
Snakes Say Hiss!!! – Turn Me On
Rumspringa – Minds Awake
Volcano, I’m Still Excited! – Two Exclamation Points

Grouper and City Center, modern practitioners of the ethereal, have released a limited split 7″ suitable for the collector of motive driven pieces. Over time I’ve become absolutely entranced by Liz Harris and her persistence in subtlety which really shines through on “False Horizon,” no pun intended. Enchanted vocal canons overlaying the current of an insistent strumming leave me comfortable in disease, or just thankful for the inspiration that so many draw from Portland. Support Grouper, purchase here. You can catch Liz on April 26 at the Smell and in May when she tours with Animal Collective.

Moving onto a more lo-fi romantipop is Rosemead, CA’s Night Control. Curtis Christopher Smith’s first official full-length falls along the lines of Ariel Pink gone way of Jason Schwartzman and proves that it doesn’t take years of direct exposure to Wes Anderson for “blissful and serene noise pop” to happen. Pick up Death Control here via Brian Levine (ex-Bipolar Bear) and Paul Kneejie’s (still Bipolar Bear) label, Kill Shaman.

Coming from Los Angeles the ’snow day’ is nothing but a mythical being that I could only one day wish to experience. Well, March 2, I just want to wish you and the world a happy snow day! Classes here in New York are cancelled leaving me with nothing to do but catch a few more z’s and present a mini-mixtape of relevant tunes that I really enjoy. A special track in here is from one of FMLY’s closest FRNDS, Timothy Rabbit, who you may know at the bassist of The Morning Benders. We’ve known Tim since ‘05 and are so proud of him, keep it up, wherever you are on tour! Also of note is satanstompingcaterpillars, lasting from 2000-’03 consisting of Tobacco and Power Pill Fist, three albums were released – the last of which contains several songs that would go on to become Black Moth Super Rainbow. Explosions In The Sky’s “Snow and Lights” would have been a great addition, but I take it you all have those notes tattoo’d by now, crazy kids…
Electric President – Snow On Dead Neighborhoods
Timothy Rabbit – It’s Always Snowing In Iceland
Grouper – Wind and Snow
satanstompingcaterpillars – Black Snow (pre-Black Moth Super Rainbow)
Let me drop some music on you that I’ve been feeling this past month.
Grouper is the sole project of Portland’s Liz Harris. It’s a gift when you can take a sound and make it your own the way that Harris has developed her own unique brand of shoegaze – think Beach House or a non-vegan and less minimal Pocahaunted. You can pick up a copy of her third and latest album,
Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill,
here.
Grouper – Fishing Bird (Empty Jutted In The Evening Breeze)
Grails came at me from left field recently, having never heard this Portland instrumental group should be a crime! Arranging arena rock anthems with a slew of interesting concepts and instruments, Grails is the next band to tell your friends about. Throw them on a tour with Holy Fuck and you’ve got yourself a match made in heaven.
Grails – Reincarnation Blues

I’ve been dipping into Yoni Wolf’s Why? tunes pre-anticon and am amazed in the difference of instrumentation and overall tone which his albums have come to represent. This is not a great example of Why? music at all, which is precisely why I’m posting it. If you want to listen to Yoni go off on some Octopus Project or Explosions-like jam, by all means download this track. Add Yoni on MySpace
here.
Why? – The Swingsets Dead

If you take a look into the mass archive of Animal Collective b-sides and rarities you’ll find some pretty trippy tunes, yeah, even trippy by AC standards. Here’s one that the whole family can have a good time with.
Animal Collective – Must Be a Treeman
