Busy P (Ft. Murs) – To Protect & Entertain (Crookers Remix)

The Streets – Blinded by the Lights

This past weekend saw the Bay at it’s best — and by best I mean it was like being cuddled up between two gigantic breasts and peacefully bounced to sleep, all the while looking up at this face that was far beyond any sort of physical beauty.

skeet skeet street street (day 1)

Street Scene was everything I ever wanted in a women and more. She was a well put together, classy, yet a bit messy and bitchy at times. She danced, she smoked, she relaxed, and she was fucking HOT. There’s nothing that I could want that she didn’t give me (besides maybe road head), yet at the same time I was let down in the most measurable way I think it turned me off of her; the epitome of blue-balls.

Friday was PERFECT. I couldn’t have asked for a better day. It started off hot as hell with some world tunes from Extra Golden. Then came the killing of some time wondering about the wide arrange of different stages and vendors.

2009 virgin mobile festival

I don’t know about you, but I’m about to Craigslist Rideshare my way down to Maryland. Girl Talk has yet to sample Blink-182, and my speculation is that it’s because he holds them as high as we do. If there’s any chance that Blink and Gillis can team up it’s here, and we’re not missing it. Girl Talk x Barker FOR THE WIN!

Breakbeat Heartbeat – Feeling This (Blink-182 remix)

WARREN, NJ, June 24, 2009 Speculation and predictions that have filled blogs and discussion boards can be put to rest. The Virgin Mobile Festival is returning, but with a catch. It’ll be free.

Virgin Mobile USA, creator of one of the largest and most critically acclaimed music festivals in the U.S., announced today that it would host the 2009 Virgin Mobile Festival on Sunday, August 30, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., free of charge. All tickets will be given away, and previous Virgin Mobile Festival ticket buyers and Virgin Mobile customers will have the first crack at securing the 35,000 tickets.

The move celebrates both a giveback to music fans in a bad economy as well as an effort to solicit donations to homeless youth agencies in need around the country via The RE*Generation, Virgin Mobiles charitable arm. Most sponsors, including premier sponsor Kyocera Communications, will be building awareness for the cause in their marketing efforts around the festival.

“Instead of focusing on layoffs or the state of the economy, we want to focus on concrete ways to provide assistance to those in need”, said Dan Schulman, CEO, Virgin Mobile USA. “People need outlets to both lend a helping hand and to escape and relax, for free, even if just for one day. We want to throw some good news in the mix”.

The 2009 Virgin Mobile FreeFest will be hosted on the beautiful, 40 wooded acres of Merriweather Post Pavilion. The grounds and facilities of Merriweather will be expanded to accommodate the multiple stage and dance tent set-up from prior Virgin Mobile Festivals. Those scheduled to appear at this years FreeFest include Weezer, Blink-182, Franz Ferdinand, and Public Enemy, Jet, The National, Girl Talk, The Bravery, The Hold Steady, St. Vincent, Wale, and Taking Back Sunday, as well as dance tent favorites that include HOLY FUCK, Pete Tong, Danny Howells and Lee Burridge.

A very odd lineup, peep the website for more info.

more blends please

Super interesting blends and mashups floating around out there. First up is Dead Prez remashed with David Banner by DJ Eleven. Taking suit to the chill vibes that were brought out by the Hood Internet orchestrated Grizzly Bear vs Dead Prez, Eleven views the classic from an attractive and curious perspective.

DJ Eleven – Bigger Than Hip-Hop (Dead Prez vs David Banner)

Girl Talk performed at Yale not too long ago and a bootleg has surfaced. As always with his live recordings, the sounds just make you wish you were there for the extended eargasmic portions of audible cheesecake. Download the entire performance at Free Culture.

Girl Talk – I’m Ill

Our boys over at The Hood Internet just posted another solid mash, this time of The Pharcyde vs Casiotone For The Painfully Alone.

ABX – Passin’ My White Jetta By

In other news, we’re still waiting on the mythical second album by the Avalanches.

a (girl) talk with gregg gillis

Where hasn’t Girl Talk been the past three years, since the explosion after Night Ripper, the man, Gregg Gillis, has left his Biomedical Engineering job, released another album, and toured all over this small world of ours. So to celebrate this celebrodome status, we thought we’d get a couple words in with the man himself. – All photos via J. Caldwell, Thanks!

One thing that really came to me – more as a blinding epiphany than anything else – was how this fame has undermined my respect for the man. Everyone seems to be doing “mash-ups” now, but one thing that holds true to Gillis that is often overlooked (or oversimplified, as I did in the interview by saying mash-up instead of sample) – he doesn’t mash anything, he cuts, shortens, speeds, and splices samples into a soundscape that’s comparable to any sample based artist. In the interview he brings up the Avalanches, which got me thinking. There is no difference between the two, only the Avalanches (as well as DJ Shadow [also discussed] and Amon Tobin – Foley Room + more) manage to create a non pop enfused album, with more sound effects instead of songs, whereas Gillis manages to sample a good percentage of U.S hits, forever being mislabeled as a mash-up artist. The following is a lesson in all things Gillis, Enjoy.

Girl Talk – Let’s Start This Party Right (Secret Diary)
Girl Talk – Cleveland, Shake (Unstoppable)
Girl Talk – Smash Your Head (Night Ripper)
Girl Talk – Pump This Party (Girl Talk Murders Seattle)
Girl Talk – Here’s the Thing (Feed The Animals)
Grizzly Bear – Knife (Girl Talk Remix)

Flashback! Party Sequence

Back in the day when FMLY began I had a piece every weekend called Flashback! Party Sequence – this is when misplaced !’s were all the rage. These posts are for every party in the country, every mixtape yet to be made, every mixtape that has been made and everyone who goes weekend to weekend trying to get a little lovin. I enjoy putting these together, hopefully you enjoy rockin’ out to them, so lets get back into the pre-2000’s!

First up is a little Pharoahe fuckin’ Monch, back in ‘99 when Internal Affairs dropped, holy shit. All I gotta say is press play and ‘get the fuck up’!

Girl Talk undoubtedly gave new life to Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” dubbing it over “Flashing Lights” and “15 Step” honors. Now that at least a verse has been ingrained in the minds of young America it’s safe to call this track a dance floor freak out, you’ll at least know who the real hip-hop heads are when a few start spittin’ Dre.

To end this week’s Flashback! Party Sequence is “Pony” by Ginuwine. Say what you will about the guy and his ‘too-on-point-to-be-straight’ dance moves, but there was a time when nothing got a two person bedroom party pumpin’ like a little Ginuwine. I was in elementary when this tune came out, so how do I know this? I made conversation with the bus driver from Westwood all the way to Crenshaw – her fingernails looked just like the mountain from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Seriously though, who needs to rap over Daft Punk when you have a sick beat like this.

tracks
Pharoahe Monch – Simon Says
Blackstreet – No Diggity (feat Dr Dre)
Ginuwine – Pony
BONUS:
Klaxons – No Diggity (Blackstreet cover)

I’m listening to the radio and it was just announced that Obama has declared that there shall be no interference with Medical Marijuana Dispensaries. If you were in Los Angeles during the later part of Summer then you hopefully heard about Blackwater raiding Organica (across the street from Costco) just hours before a San Diego court declared it illegal on a state level. Thanks Obama! If he has put this into effect federally then in the back of his head there must be some type of nation-wide plan for the decriminalization or at the very least dispensaries. RiP: A Remix Manifesto

In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.

The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.

A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at , for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

Which side of the ideas war are you on?

Noah’s Top 5 Albums Of The Summer

Hey guys and gals, I thought that it would be nice to share the top five albums that I’ve been jammin’ out to this summer and hopefully Cameron and Sophie will follow with similiar posts. Now if I didn’t party too hard all summer then I’d have the good sense to say that Air France, Talkdemonic and Syclops are my top three summer albums, but unfortunately I don’t so you’ll have to wait until the end of the year to see those babies again.

5. My summer began with an obsession over L.A. based band, Pocahaunted. Their dark and primal sounds remind me of an earlier less-poppy Animal Collective and I’m a big fan of slow progressions when there are haunting vocals involved. I’m honestly a little confused when it comes to records that Pocahaunted has either released or appeared on, so I’m going to call upon their entire discography for this one.
Pocahaunted – Sweat Lodge

4. Who can deny The Cool Kids their Bake Sale kumuffins? Certainly not me. I was lucky enough to catch Mickey and Chuck at The Key Club in early June – just a month after catching the guys at Coachella – and I’ve been dropping lyrics in conversation just to make myself “A Little Bit Cooler.”
The Cool Kids – A Little Bit Cooler

3. After an intense reclusive period in my life where all I did was talk about and listen to Animal Collective, what better way to ease back into a normal social world then to dive head first into El Guincho? None, that’s what. If you haven’t hopped on the train yet, it just arrived at the station for ya. El Guincho’s smooth spanish stylings will without a doubt make their way into all of your summer playlists, and with great timing as usual our pals over at The Hood Internet have posted a kick-ass mash of El Guincho and Pitbull.
ABX – Anthemillas [via zSHARE]

2. I love Ratatat. I always have and, unless I hear that they’re fucking underage girls like so many others, I always will. LP3 easily makes it onto my list of albums that everyone needs to party to this summer.
Ratatat – Black Heroes

1. As a guy that has DJ’d enough parties to understand the highs and lows I’ve gotta shoutoutoutout to the biggest crowd pleaser around, Girl Talk. Feed the Animals has been in my car non-stop since its release a couple of weeks ago and I’m absolutely loving every second of it. If you haven’t already, download the entire album for FREE off of his MySpace.
Girl Talk – No Pause

So there it is! I couldn’t be more excited to hear more music coming from Esau Mwamwaya, Clipse and others. I’m also going back and listening to No Age’s Wierdo Rippers in a whole new light. What have you been rockin’ out to this summer?
