jeffrey lewis & fmly: part 1

Cameron and I had the pleasure of borrowing the way sweet Jeffrey Lewis yesterday during a recording session of some of his post-Em Are I tunes. Here’s part one of three! Below is a screenshot from part three of Jeff sporting one of our unique handmade FMLY baby masks which you can pick up at our bike ride next Saturday or at any FMLY show, I personally made this one titled “Baby Manhattan” modeling Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan. Other folks who have made masks include Cop Magnet, EASYBOY, Elliott DeCesare, Saraswathi, Cameron and a heap more pals!

new york this weekend

Supp NY! This weekend is an outstanding practice in music that we love, so lets not get around to all that’s going on but clue you in on where we’ll be.

On Friday, FMLY Presents: Masters of the Universe, a free evening of music with Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Ethan joined FMLY for SXSW ‘09 with his band Reverse X Rays and came out to Los Angeles for a FMLY backyard birthday party last summer with Peter & the Wolf. Philip Seymour Hoffman has joined us recently for Thank You Come Again, Beach Dazed, and was featured on IMPOSE today.

Party starts at 5, goes til 8 or 9. Probably a dance party following the sets.

Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele – Eight Note Run
Ethan Master Of The Hawaiian Ukulele – If You’re Acting Like A Baby (How’re You Going To Be Her Man?)
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Firing Missiles At Christmas And Easter Island
BNS
Reverse X Rays – Buffalo Machine

Saturday starts with a free performance of M. Ward, Mike Watt and Nels Cline at the Central Park Summerstage (gates open at 7) and rounds out with an APW afterparty featuring Tokyo Police Club and LA Riots. Flyer here, free with RSVP here. However, these events are repeatable which is why I’m going to be spending a chunk of my Saturday witnessing Merce Cunningham’s final piece, a site-specific work for Rockefeller Park in Lower Manhattan, as part of the River to River fest. The performance will take place at 6pm on Saturday, and again at 2 and 6pm on Sunday. Maybe hit up all three? More info here. A family movement workshop will also take place on both Saturday and Sunday at 4pm.

Slip and Slide

On Sunday JellyNYC boasts one of the most stellar shows of the summer at the Williamsburg Waterfront – a Round Robin with Dan Deacon (solo set), No Age, Deerhunter and probably some special guests. Lets just cross our fingers that this one doesn’t get rained out. Gates open at 3!

FMLY PRSNTD: Forget The Plunger, We’re Leaving It Clogged!

Big ups to our ex-Dean & Franklin crew Mr. Cracktacular, Moody Majical and Stevie Weavie for allowing FMLY to PRSNT their eviction party. We brought the Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan masses DJ sets by Mr. Cracktacular, DJ Tanner aka Your Majesty, Ryder Ripps, the recently blogged about ECK$ and a stunning beat-set by our boy cloud.. The dance with grind, shake and pop, the smell was green, and the cops were absent – all in all it may have been on of the most epic parties I’ve ever been to…and I never even left the basement! Pictures after the jump.

cloud. – How It Is
ECK$ – Bitch I’m The Boss
Your Majesty – She Isn’t The Only Thing That’s Loud (circa early ‘07)
The Cool Kids – Basement Party

Jack Littman at The Knitting Factory

On November 20 a pretty monumental event will take place. Cameron Rath and Jack Littman will play together at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood for what is anticipated to be one fucking incredible night of inspiring and passionate music. Jack’s first performance was at the FMLY Backyard Extravaganza over summer and he blew me away with his lyrics of genuine honesty and a complementing guitar. For all who were there, I was in tears when his girlfriend Kate surprised him and came back from Europe early to catch the show…yeah, it was that emotional. This isn’t to be missed, tickets are $12 and you can find out more information here.

I don’t mean to ruin any soon-to-be surprises coming from FMLY, but take a gander over here and get excited. This is only the beginning. Once again, I can not stress this enough, if you have any interest in helping out we can use you. Send an email to cameron@thefmly.com or noah@thefmly.com and just let us know what your skills are – we have work for you!

FMLY Presents el Guincho

Here’s one of the more rare el Guincho tracks, enjoy!

CMJ Week At A Glance

[goodbye blue monday, see you soon]

Thanks to all who came out for FMLY’s Breakfast of Champions. It was a beautiful day with some beautiful people and big ups to Itaru from Rumspringa for getting out of jail on time to play the show! We opened with Savoir Adore who rocked the performance art space in the back of Goodbye Blue Monday. Up next DD/MM/YYYY got everyones blood pumping with one of the most high energy sets I have seen all week. Nick Jozwiak took that vibe and created an improvisational set of loops, distortion and some of the most beautiful vibrations that have ever penetrated my ears. After Nick I performed a new set, my 30 minute Ninjasonik “Art School Girls” remix, filled with some Super Mash Bros, DJDT and the largest joint circle on this side of the calendar. Stay tuned for the “Art School Girls” video release party that I’ll be playing at. After that the night took a small break to welcome DJ Teenwolf of Ninjasonik spinning some exclusive unheard tracks that he has been working on with Blaqstarr. The Hood Internet took to the decks blasting classics for the party animals in the house. Rumspringa went on shortly after and rocked a full house of fans to their knees. I definitely learned that drinking straight Tequila on stage is badass, the fans love it and that you should ALWAYS share. The night ended with Ninjasonik who played to a crowd of first timers and in the chaos of “Tight Pants,” Cameron in an Obama mask and a surprise collaboration of Ninjasonik and Rumspringa (watch out Youtube!), FMLY’s B of C proved to NY that we can take on CMJ week…bring it SXSW!

We have plenty of surprises in store for the future including our just announced show at the Knitting Factory on November 29 with Subtle (anticon) and Zach Hill (of Hella). Subtle’s ExitingARM is a fucking fantastic album that should be on everyones shelf alongside Zach’s Astrological Straits. Both of these artists push the boundaries of their respective genres and if you haven’t seen Zach Hill yet…well you’re in for a surprise. If you were in NY this week then hopefully you caught Zach playing drums for Marnie Stern, and speaking of Marnie I insist on picking up her latest release, This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That (Kill Rock Stars) – album title inspired by Alan Watts.

In addition to November 29 FMLY is also working on a winter celebration at the Echoplex. Get ready for Snowdayz In LA (I prefer Snowdaze) featuring Daedelus, Busdriver, The Mae Shi, Rumspringa, Fool’s Gold and more to be announced.

As T.I. says, there are “Big Things Poppin’” and we couldn’t be more excited to share our favorite bands with you. We were even mentioned on the top 40 charts! If you’d like to help out and become an integral role in the FMLY we are looking for inspired writers, iMovie editors and someone who enjoys photography or videocameras to capture the live magic of these performances. If this sounds like something you would be into then please send an email to noah@thefmly.com or cameron@thefmly.com with a sample of your writing, photography or video skills. Thanks everyone, we couldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for your support.

Ticket Giveaway

DJ Hallogallo will be giving away 3 pairs of tickets tomorrow at 2 for FMLY’s Breakfast of Champions on East Village Radio. Tune in to win!
