total recall!

I love arranging these Flashback! Party Sequence posts so much it’s a shame that I can’t get myself to do it regularly. In previous throwbacks we’ve heard from Coolio, Boys II Men, Baby Bash, Blackstreet, Ginuwine, etc…so put down the Girl Talk because here’s a new batch of tunes for you DJs to say, “hey, i should put this in my set.” Welcome to my sixteenth installment, see you on the other side.

4 Non Blondes will forever be a bar band, “What’s Up” being the tune that some tipsy hipster drops 4 true quarters on. Thankfully, that hipster has dope taste…at least better than this George Clinton ‘do that Linda Perry has going on – but with a voice like that who gives a shit! Ironically 4NB founding guitarist, Shaunna Hall, became an official member of George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic in 2007. Everytime I hear this tune I can’t help but sing-a-long to one of the more tasteful throwbacks in my repertoire.

A Goofy Movie was one of my favorite films growing up and a large part of that was for the precise song. Powerline’s “Eye To Eye” is undoubtedly paying homage to Michael Jackson and is one of the most successful examples of this next to the Simpson’s “Happy Birthday Lisa.” If this song wasn’t a part of your childhood then I am deeply sorry, especially for your absence of Pauly Shore.

Trio’s “Da Da Da” was one of my favorite songs on the radio during the ages of 3 through 10 and you know what, it still would be if DJs played more than Billboard’s top100. Goes from the most boring to confusing video ever at the 1:22 mark, killing the waitress will never kill the jam!

Powerline – Eye To Eye

Flashback! Party Sequence

[please don't drink and drive]

The week is SXSW, St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Break, which are three huge reasons to what? Road trip, or as I like to say, Bro Trip.

When the night sets in, drivers on the road wear thin, your pals pass out and you’re battling drowsiness, a great playlist is key towards making it another hundred miles or so. This week’s Flashback! Party Sequence is dedicated to the drivers traversing new territory this week. Good luck, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

To start is one of the greatest travel songs of all time, as dubbed by Wes Anderson. Hot off the Darjeeling Limited soundtrack is the Kinks’ “This Time Tomorrow,” moments this epic can only happen once per day.

Just because an epic Kinks moment can only happen once per day doesn’t mean that these memory-makers are over, we’ve got lots of eras to cover! Another awesome and universal roadtrip tune is the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today.” Yes, the song may be written about suicide, but when you compose a piece that gets as Titanic as this it really belongs to our global society for interpretation, lets just say it’s about a roadtrip that will change your life.

But, as far as road trips go, nothing beats a great time with your pals and, of course, Neil Patrick Harris.

I take off on an 1800mi road trip to SXSW in several hours, so farewell for the next week or so. Gray and Matte will continue to keep your ears occupied.

Flashback! Party Sequence

The time has come for yet another Flashback! Party Sequence and judging by the reception from last weeks I’m glad that you’re all enjoying it so much! Remember to download, mix and have an awesome weekend of nostalgia.

First up is a song I’ve been rockin’ for a decade now and that’s Hole’s “Celebrity Skin.” Yeah, Courtney love is sooo 90s, but that’s where we’re aiming! Special Girl Talk track from Unstoppable up for download as well for those whose collections begin at Night Ripper.

Second is Boyz II Men’s classic “I’ll Make Love To You.” Always an on-point track to close a night off to, it’s a shame that this r&b staple hasn’t become more of a DJ anthem…but I really shouldn’t be giving away all of my secrets like this.

Next up is actually a track that makes it onto the list of my favorite songs of all time, and that’s Baby Bash’s “Suga Suga.” Please don’t comment on the previous statement, but lifelong memories are attached and that beat is just so dank…this song will def be played at my way-in-the-future wedding.

Does anyone remember Coolio? I actually caught him live a few years ago, it was awesome to say the least. If you’re familiar with Pachelbel’s Canon then chances are you’re a music student, and if you’re a music student then chances are you’re aware of Pachelbel’s Canon in Vitamin C’s “Graduation” and Coolio’s “I’ll C U When U Get There” just to name two popular relevant tracks. To learn more about Pachelbel’s Canon in D in contemporary music there’s an awesome and hilarious Youtube video of Rob Paravonian going through his own personal history with the song incorporating some great examples of musical borrowing. Check it out after the jump.

Hole – Celebrity Skin
Boyz II Men – l’ll Make Love To You
Baby Bash – Suga Suga (feat Frankie J)

Flashback! Party Sequence

So I’ll admit my irresponsibility when it comes to the Flashback! Party Sequences of the past month, but that will be no more! This week I have a track so hot you’ll be glad that it has taken so long to reach your ears. As “long-time” FMLY readers know, I’m a great lover of Diplo – he’s the greatest in the game. Recently he dropped a Bmore Tribe Called Quest remix entitled “Brew Barrymore” that has been my night-timing anthem of the past couple of weeks. As usual, my only complaint is of the track’s briefness, so I’m including an extremely badass remix by DJ Kue of Rage Against The Machine’s “Bulls On Parade.”

Diplo – Brew Berrymore
Rage Against The Machine – Bulls On Parade (DJ Kue Remix)

BONUS:
If Lost is your favorite show on television, then this is for you. FMLY FRNDs over at The Hood Internet really know how to keep mashups interesting and the downtime between seasons of Lost exciting. Check out the Youtube vid for MC Luscious vs. Lost.

Have a great weekend!

Flashback! Party Sequence

So I’ve officially and publicly caught the Usher bug, I can’t get enough “Love In This Club.” Add this shit to your playlists and wait for the Your Majesty remix of the remix. Check ya l8r and happy Flashback! Party Sequence!

Usher – Love In This Club (Jeansbjorn Remix)

Up-To-Date! Party Sequence

So for this week’s Flashback! Party Sequence I’d like to choose a more contemporary song, Walter Meego’s “Girls.” XLR8R really turned me onto this group and especially this particular song (although the entire album is of the same quality). So download and enjoy this at Silent Rave Night! Don’t like new music on your Flashback! Party Sequence Friday? It’s chill, this is a special circumstance.

Flashback! Party Sequence

What more do you need in a Friday than a back to back to the future Fucked Up Friday and Flashback! Party Sequence? Maybe some more FMLY!
This week’s party starter is an aged song to the familiar but still as hot to all. The Thermals are THE ultimate party band sans remix whether you love or hate ‘em, although I’ve never met a h8r. Add this diddy to your playlist of the night for instant euphoria.

Flashback! Party Sequence

Another Friday, another Flashback! Party Sequence. Well this week is an extra comfort song, a little throwback to a better time…the beautiful Enya. Remix this wannabes!

Enya – Fire and Ice

Flashback! Party Sequence

So I don’t want to give away any FMLY secrets, but Your Majesty is working on a new mixtape which is being put together with the theme of prom in mind. Here’s an original version of a song that you may just find somewhere on it and is also this Friday’s Flashback! Party Sequence! If you live in L.A., don’t forget to go to the Troub tonight for Meals, Histories and Canon. Sorry things are moving slower around here, my internet is on the fritz and SXSW has been eating up a lot of time.

Dutch pop stars are the best.
Vengaboys – Boom Boom Boom Boom

Flashback! Party Sequence 3

Three Flashback! Party Sequence posts in a row!? Noah, you must be losing it!

No my friends, I am not losing it, I just love to party and I would hope that you do as well. Actually I was going to save this track for next week but I couldn’t keep it from you guys too long since I’ve seen it popping up around the blogosphere. Anyways, if you’re familiar with the work of CFCF then you must either be a fan or a real connoisseur of electronic music because he isn’t a name very easy to come by. I have not yet heard a CFCF track that I didn’t like making this one no exception, in fact, this might be one of my favorite electronic tracks. If you’re a child of the 90’s and a collector of new millennium music such as myself, this will be exactly what you want to hear. CFCF “covers” the 90’s hit track by OMC, “How Bizarre.” I have so many good memories tied to this song it’s impossible not to like it. If you’re familiar with Schneider TM’s remake of The Smith’s “The Light 3000,” there is a very similar production style.

Flashback! Party Sequence 2

So here at FMLY we aim to please everyone multiple times, meaning if one person isn’t happy then none of you are happy. An anonymous commenter expressed their dislike for my childhood flashback remix and I fully encourage more readers to do the same, otherwise I’ll just end up posting not fun music. So lets do this Flashback! Party Sequence Friday right!

Of course, I’m not going to completely undermine myself and post a safe track like Basement Jaxx or nine Daft Punk tunes. No way, that’s not my style. This african baile funk remix has a very homemade non-produced feel and I would completely expect and hope that this was made in a bedroom. The quality of the track isn’t high enough to add to your bangin’ Friday night DJ set at Club Cool but you can certainly bump this around friends and I promise you they’ll go ape shit over it.

Afrikanner – Barney African Remix

If this song doesn’t meet your desires, I’m very sorry, because it more than met mine when I first heard it. If you would like to have a song that you made or you think that others would like featured on next week’s Flashback! Party Sequence, please email it to hi.noahklein@gmail.com with a 100 words or less description. Whoever sends the best song – judged completely on a matter of my opinion – will receive a couple of goodies in the mail. Please no Justice or Chromeo / 90s music remixed is highly encouraged.

Flashback! Party Sequence

It’s Friday and you know what that means…another Flashback! Party Sequence! Wo0!

So who loves the 90’s!? Well if you raised your hand then today is your fuckin’ day bro! Growing up my favorite movies were Indiana Jones and The Shadow – but today we’ll be focusing on Mr. Jones because tonight you’ll all add this into your DJ sets and think of me. It’s a remix of the Indiana Jones theme that to my best guess what made in Latin America because it has a very grassroots baile funk feel. If you know who made this, let a brotha know. Or if you speak Spanish, then maybe Artista Desconhecido actually is the name? Aiight, rock out and reminisce!

Artista Desconhecido – Indiana Jones

Also, if you go to The New School and live in Loeb Hall then watch out when you take the elevator tonight. I heard Your Majesty and DJ Ecks are gonna be spinnin’ some hipster top 40oz up in that elevizzy!
