I don’t think I’ve ever been to a better vibed downtown show, the only one comparable not in IV was No Age and that’s only because you don’t need more than 10 people shouldering each other to enjoy the moment. The night panned out like a lucid dream, it was a night of spoken word caught in a web of clear guitar, of levity and unity between a crowd and it’s master, but most importantly, it was a night to remember.

Unfortunately the road has ended for
Devendra Banhart and
Natalie Portman. It was announced today in
US Weekly (unreliable source) that “Things just weren’t working out.” I was pretty into the couple, especially since I got to see NP at the
Megapuss show at the Hammer over summer. Megapuss is on a mini-tour in promotion of their album

Best Friends Forever – How BFF Breaks It Off With Movie Stars (highly rec’d)

To the juggling act of my musical situation, i have added two objects. Maybe one’s a machete, the other a chainsaw. who knows.
What I’m saying here is that I’m playing with/in two whole bands on a little upcoming tour of the west coast:
a) I’m playing a miniature fretless silicone string bass in Megapuss (aka Devendra and Greg Rogove). At least I think I am. Megapuss leaves a lot up to chance.
b) I went and joined a band called Little Joy. Its Rodrigo Amarante, Fabrizio Moretti, Binki Shapiro (of burbank), and now, it seems, myself. Little Joy leaves very little up to chance.
We just finished a record, (Little Joy and I, that is) which will be dropping (softly) into stores on November 4th courtesy of Rough Trade Records.
Megapuss has a record that just came out too.

Last night Devendra Banhart revealed his new side project Megapuss. The concept behind Megapuss is very simple. Each song takes less than 10 minutes to write and they are all fun, silly, and short. With a small turn out, there was a lot of space to sit and watch just feet away from the band. Devendra wore a belt of penises, Aziz from Human Giant with just the one penis peeking all the way out of his pants. During their set images were shown behind them including several of band members and a couple of Devendra Banhart naked. There’s something you won’t see at the Hollywood Bowl.
This was one of the most exciting nights of my life for a lot of reasons but this was probably the main reason.
