Responding to several requests I have dug up an old copy of this 2005 Deerhunter CD-R. It features only me and Moses and is very experimental in nature. This was during our “tape phase” when we would often play shows as a duo (or as a trio with colin) playing only tape machines and vocal loops.
Tracklist:
1. Bright and Early (8:30)
2. Cicadas (3:56)
3. Rotation (8:03)
4. But I’m A Boy (6:54)
5. Three Dolphins Melting into Orange Wax (4:20)
6. Snow Dogs (2:12)
7. Dogs are Cool (3:41)
8. Homorobotic (3:54)
9. Cordless (2:05)
10. When I Taste Blood (2:53)
Recorded live to 2-track cassette machine at Moses’ old house on North Ave & Ponce
“Mastered” at the Old Notown building on my dad’s ancient PC using Soundforge,
Scans of all original artwork from the Notown Xerox Machine included.
Whoaaa, thanks Bradford. Download Carve Your Initials Into The Walls of the Nightright here. And a fun fact, Burial uses Soundforge for his tunes. That shit is archaic.
I just really had to get that damn eye ball off the first post. It probably scared some people away… There’s no other reason for this weird mix of tunes…
Supp NY! This weekend is an outstanding practice in music that we love, so lets not get around to all that’s going on but clue you in on where we’ll be.
Saturday starts with a free performance of M. Ward, Mike Watt and Nels Cline at the Central Park Summerstage (gates open at 7) and rounds out with an APW afterparty featuring Tokyo Police Club and LA Riots. Flyer here, free with RSVP here. However, these events are repeatable which is why I’m going to be spending a chunk of my Saturday witnessing Merce Cunningham’s final piece, a site-specific work for Rockefeller Park in Lower Manhattan, as part of the River to River fest. The performance will take place at 6pm on Saturday, and again at 2 and 6pm on Sunday. Maybe hit up all three? More info here. A family movement workshop will also take place on both Saturday and Sunday at 4pm.
On Sunday JellyNYC boasts one of the most stellar shows of the summer at the Williamsburg Waterfront – a Round Robin with Dan Deacon (solo set), No Age, Deerhunter and probably some special guests. Lets just cross our fingers that this one doesn’t get rained out. Gates open at 3!
As I said before when looking at Psychedelic Horseshit and Wavves, it’s always interesting to hear about the relationships between musicians and watch how they form. Funny enough, it seems like everyone has an interest in Wavves including Bradford Cox. Fortunately, this one is drama-free. “Weed Demon” can be found on the latest Atlas Sound micromix on the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound blog that we love so much. Tracklisting after the jump, it’s a dope one as usual. Click that blog link a couple of sentences ago to download the mix.
Here’s a track from Deerhunter’s forthcoming Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP, due out June 8 on Kranky. Next to Microcastle, “Rainwater Cassette Exchange” has a misty doo-wop vibe and the potential to become a pretty epic live tune.
Missing every show that Deerhunter is playing in your town? Well look no further than this post, unless you want to find out about MORE music I’m into, because the sweethearts over at NYCTaper recorded the Atlanta based groups’ entire show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn Friday night. Download the magic here.
edit: i’ve been told that nyctaper is down for now. i was just there an hour ago so i don’t know what to say other than just enjoy the video above. try again tomorrow?

It’s a great weekend in shows for not such a great weekend in weather – in the mile and a half or so it takes me to bike to school my clothes soaked up enough water to drip for a good few hours. Anways, here’s what’s up.
Tonight Care Bears On Fire are playing tonight at 92YTribeca
Soft Circle and Eric Copeland (of Black Dice) are playing at my fav place to be, The Cake Shop
Dream Bitches, The Naked Hearts, Bunnygrunt and Utah Rangers are playing Glasslands
Drive By Truckers and The Hold Steady are holdin’ it down at Terminal 5 (where Girl Talk will be playing this month? wha?)
Bad Brains are chillin’ at Irving Plaza
Smashing Pumpkins (ex-good Smashing Pumpkins) are playing their mainstream brand of psychedelia at the United Palace Theater
Friday&Saturday Now don’t get me wrong, there are loads of great shows this weekend including Asobi Seksu, Conor Oberst, Deer Tick, Health, Islands, Muggabears, Mountain Goats and Kaki King which you can check out here. However, I’ll be saying fuck it to all that great music in an attempt to catch two days of Deerhunter playing with Times New Viking and Vivian Girls just to name drop.
I’ll admit that I was one of those guys who downloaded Deerhunter’s Microcastle illegally when it first leaked and although I haven’t yet heard the official and fully mastered version I can say confidently that Deerhunter has released one of the best albums of the year…and that’s not even counting the bonus Weird Era Cont.
Today saw the release of this gem and I insist that Deerhunter friends and foes give it a chance and show some love. Microcastle is broken in four parts, you’ll notice that every four songs the aesthetic changes and a new theme is developed which unifies the album at the end. The most beautiful thing about this record is not only frontman Bradford Cox’s sacrifice of his craft to Deerhunter but the duality that this album plays as either ambient or focused and provoking. Like Tobacco’s Fucked Up Friends I find this to be a perfectly crafted album; listen for a surprise visit from Cole Alexander of the Black Lips on “Saved By Old Times.” Enjoy and come to your own opinions, lets have a conversation about the progress of the band from last year’s Cryptograms.
Animal Collective’s Geologist created a beautiful 42 minute mix for tourmate and bud Bradford Cox’s (Deerhunter/Atlas Sound) blog. It’s definitely a unique mix of Thin Lizzy, The Mamas and the Papas, J Dilla and more; a great playlist to wake up to. Read the post and check the tracklist here. For further Animal Collective studying, here’s a Panda Bear mix and here’s an Avey Tare mix. Catch up with the gang Deakin!
If anyone has The Byrds’ “Dolphin’s Smile,” please let FMLY know. It’d be nice to have a mp3 of just that tune. Related, Deerhunter’s new album, Microcastle, has leaked six months in advance to its release.
Not related, but interesting. iTunes has made the single of the week, “Blind,” by Hercules & Love Affair. Go read the user reviews, they’re absolutely hilarious.
