after a brief hiatus, if i ran the zoo returned tuesday at five p.m. to audibly celebrate fantastic cmj experiences. with no badge and barely any cash, i was able to go to all the shows on my wishlist (thanks to killer unofficial shows and piano’s+cake shop having the nicest sounding free parties every day)! below are some super special highlights of pals we got to see play/hang with/meet for the first time and others we missed but were also making sweet jams in the city that week. more pictures and fun times after the jump!

Like, we mention Steve quite a bit on this website…as among multiple outstanding projects such as Science Center with Alberto Hernandez of Viernes [and a thousand other bands], Palindrone with pals Emily Reo and Levek, he also quadruples as Emily’s guitarist in living translations. His production is flawless, but he’ll tell you that he’s embarrassed by a crackle you might hear right there or a ratio of delay to sustain that you missed three seconds ago. His textures are completely unique, but he’ll mention a piece of Lao folk music that will blow your mind. Hand Steve any type of device and he’ll show you the most gorgeous and intricate developments of noise that can be extracted from it.

Technobox is the one man ragermeister from Orlando, the guy I’d like to be stuck in an elevator with, and hey waddya know, he plays drums in 1991 as well! Kevin Beasley aka Kevin is Beastly crafts some perfect sequences of bits, bleeps, and oh yeahz to get four on the floor and any party ballin’. Now I know where Dan Deacon’s spunk went when he broke his arm [jaykayz double dee, you'll always rule this heart]. Welcome to Florida, home of Disney World, Tiger Woods and gatorade. But that’s not all – as the rest of the world is beginning to discover, we also have music. Some pretty rad music, too. In fact, I heard that Florida is the new Portland. It was then debated whether or not Portland is the new Portland, but whatever the answer may be, Florida is the new something. This is convenient, because Florida will likely fall into the ocean soon. As the interpreter between Florida and the rest of the world, I offer you this mix, this grapefruit tree and some SPF 15.

Ascending the lessons we learned from IDM in the 90s, Orlando’s Dark Sea Of Awareness surpasses the intensity of his name with delightful ambient ballads and a strong support of good taste of pop sensibility. The sounds of the energy flow in batteries charging are evident throughout DSoA’s 10track self-titled release, and his live shows are no less than transcending whether they take place in your pal’s living room or inside of a bike shop. Though powerful enough to move a mass of observers, these jams are subtle in their introversion and although I recommend taking them to a park with your buds on a sunny day I first advise taking this record on a bike ride – and make sure to bring your good headphones. Ringing a delicate balance in the weight these sounds carry, listen loud and let your mind absorb nostalgic rich tonality circa the field and [the real] m83.
