As if this lazy Sunday couldn’t get any better, Kimya Dawson just tossed up a MySpace bulletin with more videos than I know what to do with from her recent show with Daniel Johnston. Kimya began the Olympia Free Choir – an all ages, no experience necessary and no audition choir – and they were present to back her on the tune that made me initially fall in love with Baribeau’s music, “Ten Things.” More videos after the jump including Dawson backing Johnston on “True Love Will Find You In The End” and Johnston playing drums on Dawson’s “Being Cool” which may be the most powerful live experience ever to transcend Youtube. Critics toss a lot of shit to the Dan Johnston live experience, but these videos genuinely prove that the only pieces of unappreciative hipster trash at these shows are the critics themselves for being so condescending towards the intimate connection that Dan creates. Oh, and my internet is up to speed (for now) so forgive my excitement which will certainly lead to an excessive amount of posts.
In the case of Daniel Johnston, some things do last a long time. His influence upon music of the last couple of decades is undeniable, his cult following is equal to that of the Lakers, and his genuine spirit although evolved over time has not once been tainted of its authenticity. Here are a couple of tunes for you to enjoy that derive specifically from “Some Things Last A Long Time” and have been an influence upon your FMLY.
Our feelings for Beach House are well known and Victoria Legrand’s vocals in this piece envelop you in the warmest of blankets, kiss you on the forehead, and lay you on a bed of sand as to pleasure you with mild discomfort.
We haven’t talked about Noah23 in a minute, but this track is still one of my favorites. We spun it on Public Education Sunday evening and for those of you tuning in and feeling the Daniel Johnston sample, here ya go! If Noah23 is the future of hip-hop then I’d like to be around for at least another few hundred years. The lyricism of this track still grips me like the topside of a skateboard, mad props to the embedded Dan Johnston references that I’m still picking out.
With the traditional continuation of chick flicks coming out around Valentine’s Day I thought I’d make a relevant and unique mixtape entitled, “I Love You, Man.” Also with this title at this time I figured we’re bound to collect accidental site hits. Ranging from Matty Pop Chart to Antony and The Johnsons there will definitely be some familiar tunes, but hopefully something new for everyone. Who knows, if this helps someone out this Valentine’s Day then it has done more than intended. Have a good week, and welcome to the new FMLY.
