da bears @ fmly's out of asia warehouse // cred: wes mitchell

When I caught Wavves at the Market Hotel a couple of months ago I met a dude who works at an American Apparel in San Diego. The first thing I said do him, “What! Do you know Da Bears!?” And guess what, he did! Da Bears are one of the most meaningful locals bands to me personally for several reasons, (1) they are always down to party no matter what the location, circumstance or condition (2) they have a badass band van (3) they’re some of the sweetest dudes, and band bros, and have helped us out on several occasions by just offering their presence.

Da Bears have a couple of new tunes for download on their MySpace, so head over there and give them some love! But if you’re in a rush, we’ll be hosting them on FMLY as well. Catchy hooks, mean progressions and darling vocal melodies are what I love best about Da Bears, hope you dig ‘em as well!

Da Bears – Sword In Hand
Da Bears – Regal Begal
Da Bears – Quiero Que Me Quieras (new jam)
Da Bears – The Earth Still Spins (new jam)

and after the jump is a memorial video to beau velasco from japanther and the death set.

are our faces each the same

I held my breath as everything around my body froze, I continued to fly. Upon my face meeting the street every nerve tightened and every muscle twisted. A white chalk that were my teeth left a residue upon St. Marks and as I sprawled my body across the heavily populated sidewalk all that this city could do was step over me. Nothing broken except for trust, nothing gained except for spirit.

thank you, come again

Saturday saw our day long 7/11 celebration Thank You, Come Again featuring a bunch of Los Angeles locals and Da Bears from San Diego. It was rad, we took our shirts off, and instruments from the harmonica to the ukulele to two accordions were in full effect. Turned out to be a perfect summer day among friends, bummer if you missed it. Pictures after the jump. Way more pictures here, thanks to Jim Hori for taking ‘em.

get down my dirty street

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I just got into Los Angeles relatively iTunes-less and a bit sick – I’m sure you understand. Tonight is our party with Jogger and friends and friends of friends, so make sure to come out and rage if that’s what you’re into. We’ll have a bar set up, I’m DJ’ing along with Riplee, and everyone playing is going to be stellar. Yeah, that’s right, stellar is the new dope. Come out, have a drink, meet some cuties, and choose your own adventure. For those who come early tonight we will be handing out $10 vouchers for Beach Dazed that will give you reduced admission, so if you plan on coming to both events then it’s pretty much like tonight is free. Cool, huh?

[Post-foetus] – Migration (live on FMLY Radio)

Now tomorrow is a very special event as I’ve asked many of our FRNDS to come play acoustically in a park located in Santa Monica. The event is free, will go from 2-8, there will be ultimate frisbee, it’s 7/11, and I expect nothing less than a magical evening with some of my favorite musicians.

Lets meet in Mary Hotchkiss Park on 4th Street and Hollister in Santa Monica (just off 4th and Ocean Park) at 2pm. Ultimate frisbee will begin at 2:30 sharp and bands at 3:30. The order from first to final is Jack Littman, Jessica Gerhardt, Riplee + Philip Seymour Hoffman, Djavon (Blackwater/Headhunters), Apple Orange, Hank May, Calculator, Da Bears, Koalacaust, Voice On Tape. Of course, this lineup is subject to change, and I really hope to see ya’ll there. Have any questions? Leave a comment or shoot me an email. RSVP here.

Koalacaust – Indian Summer
Hank May – I’m Going Home Tonight
Apple Orange – Be Well

da bears’ cowardly cobra set free

It’s summer and nothing feels greater than just laying in a hammock with a nice tall can of PBR. The breeze blows your hair into your face as you near napping and the smell of neighbors’ bbq will surely supply the tastiest of dreams. A faint noise appears from your home, it seems as though someone threw on some early Unicorns; the drums are sped to the point where you can’t tell if they’re man or machine and with such playful nasal falsettos there must be some type of party going on indoors. You continue on the brink of napping until curiousity overwhelms your sense of audibility and this music must be experienced fully. Upon entering home it isn’t the Unicorns, and it isn’t pre-electronic of Montreal…it’s Da Bears!

On Thursday, May 28 FMLY will present our first event of the summer: Respect The House Party. Among the playahs will be San Diego’s Da Bears, a grizzly-pop band that we just can’t fucking get enough of! Seriously, it’s like someone dipped these guys into a cotton candy machine and the result was a combination of all of our favorite sounds; bells, kick-ass drums, embracing melodies, get on the dance floor riffs, and I can continue if ya’ll wish. Da Bears have been sweet enough to allow FMLY to post their new record Classics Never Die / Cowardly Cobra for download in its entirety. If you like what you hear, buy the album for $8 here or at our house party next Friday! Big ups to Daniel Atkinson for allowing us the use of his home, respect the house party.

Da Bears – Classics Never Die / Cowardly Cobra

Also playing Respect The House Party are our good friends Head Hunters, Blackwater (Djavan of Head Hunters), DJDT, and FMLY DJs Your Majesty & Rip. We’ll have more names to announce soon. Entry is $2, PBRz are $2 and we’ll have plenty of other goodies for the party. RSVP here.

Timothy Rabbit at The Smell

As an alumni of Santa Monica High School, Timothy Rabbit is not only a pride of West LA, but a dear friend of the FMLY. Having played many of our first events back in the day, it’s been exciting to watch Tim transition from Los Angeles, to the Bay, to becoming comfortable with his sound and now playing bass as a part of The Morning Benders.

On April 4 Timothy Rabbit will hit up Downtown’s DIY darling, The Smell, for a night of “poption” (pop-action) with Franklin For Short, Enid The Dowl, Moses Campell, and an awesome surprise, Da Bears.

Tim records bedroom pop tunes concerning sweet feelings for friends, lovers and memories. If you’re the romantic or nostalgic type then try not to look Tim in the eyes when he plays, you may fall in love. Highly recommended for fans of Matty Pop Chart or The Histories.

The fbook event is here.
