a different way to be

It’s about 20degrees in my bedroom, so I roll with dense covers and heavy sheets. Kinda like this railcars interpretation of the Cranberries. No explanation necessary, I’m on a float at 3:18. Trying to see this live asap!

Speaking of railcars covers, Aria is trying to recreate Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love and needs your help. Hit up his Kickstarter for more info.

“8-bit music is definitely the punk of electronic music.” – Ary Warnaar, Anamanaguchi

BWR TH NVSN is currently underway and to celebrate the homecoming of Luke, Ary and the ‘guchi bros I’ve arranged a lil’ mixtape for ya’ll with some of my favorite 8bit covers, tunes and a special track from Anamanaguchi. I’ve found that over the past few years many folks raging hard at Anamanaguchi shows, myself included, haven’t the slightest idea of what 8bit music is or even realize that there is such a larger picture – we just love what we hear and need more. For those who have heard these infectious sounds and are craving a fix, those who just came home from our show tonight or those who just love to fuck around with 8bit this is for you. By searching the blog you can see that I’ve put these together in the past hoping that one person out there finds something new to love, but with today’s collection I don’t think that’s an issue. Enjoy the hell out of these tunes, I rock hard to ‘em.

To celebrate, here’s a tune from the Anamanaguchi vault. It’s an old demo currently being revamped so look out for it at live shows and hopefully on their next release!

blink in eight bits

We talk about 8-bit tunes a lot on this site, most of them falling under the category of bitpop. For reference, here’s the Wiki definition of what bitpop is.

Bitpop is a type of electronic music, where at least part of the music is made using old 8-bit computers, game consoles and little toy instruments. Popular choices are the Commodore 64, Game Boy, Atari 2600 and Nintendo Entertainment System.

Everyone seemed to love that Blink-182 vs Jay-Z mash a few days back so I thought I’d put together a taste of BlinkBit! To give you some personal history, Blink-182 is my favorite band of all-time and even though Animal Collective, Daft Punk, and Black Moth Super Rainbow among others are the loves of my life no one can ever touch the holy grail trio that is Blink. This holds true for a good part of us FMLY bloggers and if you’re “feeling this” the same way then rad.

On Buddha, Blink unveiled their cover of the Screeching Weasels’ “The Girl Next Door” which is definitely a favorite tune of ours. Malaysian 8-bit dance party, mikrochip no32, has been kind enough to hit us up with a cover of Blink’s “The Girl Next Door” that I can’t stop rocking out to. Listen to this and more rad mikrochip no32 tracks via 8bitcollective.

“Feeling This,” the first single off of Blink’s last album was definitely one of the hottest music videos I had ever seen at the time – I’m sure a few girls threw themselves in jail to get a taste of that. The UK’s Breakbeat Heartbeat has provided an awesome RMX/CVR of Blink’s “Feeling This” and has even more great tunes on his page which I highly recommend checking out.

And finally, I present to you “The Rock Show” like you’ve never heard it before. Big ups to ColeTrain for putting together this totally awesome remix/cover, we can’t get enough of it!

attn musicians: please stop covering creep

Hopefully we can all agree that Radiohead is an exceptional group of talented musicians whom we all care very deeply for. Unfortunately for us, the “music biz” and “authentic personalities” like to reach out by covering a Radiohead jam and maybe throwing in a ‘fucking’ here and there for either indie cred, youtube hits or whatever other sick idea brews within their head. An even greater misfortune is that 90% of the time it is “Creep” that is covered and I speak for a global community of fans when I say that we just can’t take it anymore. If KROQ in Los Angeles didn’t kill the tune then Korn did and if Korn didn’t then someone else did…who am I kidding, Korn definitely did.

My point is, there are so many amazing Radiohead tunes. Why do musicians choose to slay the same one over and over and over and over again? Yeah, it’s an incredible sing-a-long and everyone can find a time in their life where “Creep” was incredibly meaningful to their identity, but what about the song’s aura of authenticity? I don’t even know if I could ever even watch Radiohead themselves play creep ever again! Many more covers after the jump from Korn, Moby, Ingrid Michaelson, The Pretenders, Anni Rossi, Amanda Palmer and countless more. Most of these are very well done and I like them quite a bit, and do continue to cover Radiohead, but please choose a different song or show the tune a new light. Walter Benjamin would have a field day on this one.
