Brando Skirts are writing that messy, fucked up, and wildly intriguing sound that changes color with every play. I just downloaded their first record, Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo, for free over at Proyekto Records and it’s definitely conjuring up those early anticon. feelings. Maybe it’s the gross weather right now, but these tunes are laying over me like a mud bath. It’s difficult to distinguish where one sound ends and the other begins, but it feels damn nice. Stoked for the record to grow on me…but I should probably take a shower first before stems start sprouting. Really, download. Here’s a taste of their newer jams, and big ups to Carter for getting in touch!

Brando Skirts – Love Song

future dad society

Future Dad Society is a really sweet group of dudes we grew up alongside in Los Angeles who have consistently been putting out my favorite jams from high school through the present. Although the tangible name of FDS is new, the bond between these bros and their relationship to the Los Angeles music scene that I grew up into was already obvious. Really stoked to see that they’ve launched a tumblr so that folks and friends can keep up with their sounds while they’re in school or just doing their thing abroad. I recommend bookmarking the site and checking back every so often for updates.

Anyways, the reason that I bring this up is to rep Luke Silas of Anamanaguchi and every other band we love. We’ve thrown word out on Knife City in the past, but now we bear some legit chiptune downloadables. Head over here to download a four track preview of tunes, and take a tip taste below. Knife City is droppin’ jams at K&M Bar in Brooklyn on Tuesday with Role Model (aka Johan Kotlinski aka the dude who developed LSDJ), 8bit Betty, and Tenfold with visuals by JYK and the notorious Paris. rsvp.

Knife City – Poor Souls

I’m also really stoked to talk about Elephant one day soon when I can give Greg’s tunes a deserving post. Really though, check ‘em out. But download his Eating Aphids EP for free right here, it’s becoming one of my favorite Winter listenables.

interview: doin’ the dinowalrus

It’s the end of 2009 and I’m jamming away in Dinowalrus‘ rehearsal space with Total Slacker. A few months earlier I was playing a show at Public Assembly with Josh, Kyle, and Pete, and now, Pete and I are standing in an empty basement of the Charleston in Williamsburg. When I think Dinowalrus I think of the night I saw them perform at Death By Audio for an IMPOSE celebration, all smiles and questionable grooving (the good kind). Writing pieces of music as if their tones and progressions can repair a piece of machinery, Dinowalrus find comfort in expressing a unique pocket of sound in Brooklyn. Their pocket stitches across district boundaries, their presence is unintentionally in all spaces. They are in a league of the imaginative, the curious, and it’s in this whimsy that a clear message can be received. If reality is based on dreams, then let’s fucking dream.

FMLY: Hey Pete, so the Dinowalrus project has been around longer than the band and its present incarnation. What’s up with that?

Pete Feigenbaum: Dinowalrus the band really started in 2007 with Kyle and Josh. I had been doing weird bedroom electro stoner metal recordings earlier on using the name Dinowalrus… probably as eary as 2004. The album shaped up in 2008 mostly.

Rad, can you tell me who covers what duties in this fierce trio?

I do guitar, bass, vocals, and synth. Josh does drums and drum machine operation, plus some occasional guitar. Kyle does bass, guitar, sampler, synth, vocals, extra drumming and clarinet.

Dinowalrus – Electric Car, Gas Guitar

going full slacker

According to Child Bite at Death By Audio this weekend, “Total Slacker are as cute as buttons,” blending together not only the most bud-heavy of beach-pop jams but the badass appeal of just being in a band and having the best time with each other. Whether they’re tearing apart the stage at Shea Stadium or hot-boxing their spray painted van, Emily, Tucker and Ross are just all-around awesome folk that want to show you how much fun it is to do what you love. After a night at the Cake Shop, we headed back to my apartment with some pals to take part in recreational activities as well as record Total Slacker’s first interview. Video accompaniment coming in the near future. Also of note and something I’ll elaborate more on later, FMLY RCRDS is hosting Total Slacker’s initial demos for free download while cassette duties will be handled by our homies over at Mirror Universe Tapes. More on that in the interview…

Total Slacker – These Condos Don’t Belong

FMLY: Hey slackers, so where are ya’ll from?

Total Slacker: [Emily:] Well, Ross and I are from Santa Fe and Tucker is from Salt Lake City. I came here a few years ago for school and then I stopped going to school…to play in Total Slacker! [Ross:] Aw, is that why? I thought you were just takin’ a break. [Emily:] Ha, yeah, an extended break. You know.

northside hits brooklyn this weekend

Brooklyn, get off of your collective summer-loving ass this weekend because when Northside calls, you answer. Boasting an obnoxious lineup of FMLY favorites such as Zomes, Anamanaguchi, Dinowalrus, Boogie Boarder, Discovery, Ducktails, Woods, Grooms (ex-Muggabears), Daedelus, the Coathangers, Pet Ghost Project, John Vanderslice, Bill Callahan (smog), Drawlings (Abby Portner), Ponytail, Michna, The Dodos, and just about every other band that isn’t playing Bonnaroo, it would be foolish to not venture outside of your apartment and marvel in the thriving music community that Brooklyn has yet to relinquish. I will be hitting up as many shows as my bike will get me to and interviewing as many folks as I’m not left speechless in front of so if you have questions for any of the artists mentioned above then email them to me at noah@thefmly.com. And yes, I will be declaring my affinity for every one of the Coathangers so please no emails on that subject. Visit the Northside site here, purchase your badge here, and then peep the schedule here.
