cop magnet is…maxwell velocity

Donning his laptop like Thor’s hammer, Cop Magnet Is…Maxwell Velocity gives a small peek at what’s to come this year from the mind of Cop Magnet. Seriously, this dude drops non-stop hits. Hitting the future of mainstream pop music before it happens, we expect some ludicrous shit in the near future like a tape on Mirror Universe and a way too legit Young Money megaremixtape. Pick up the tape over at BoC records, and to celebrate we’re posting a Cop Magnet jam that was literally made yesterday. Can’t wait to put this on repeat driving to SXSW.

Cop Magnet – totonono

rule enough

The Craters dropped their 10-track Breakfast of Champs cassette debut, Teenage High School, yesterday and I’m way enthused on it. From what I’ve heard so far the tunes strike a sense of familiarity, forming these new beats and catchy vocal melodies that feel like something I’ve been bobbing my head to for years. It feels really great, like turning psych pop into something your parents might actually dig. You can pick up some of their older tunes from Cooling Pie Records for free or by donation right here or cop our recommended Teenage High School from BoC right here. Keep up the great tunes, Boston!

boc004: psh – the lighthouse itself is the rocket

Somewhere between chilling alone in his bedroom, excavating forgotten memories, and hypnotic deep sleeping, FMLY’s own Philip Seymour Hoffman has taken an adventure into a realm of experimental folky goodness.  While listening to this New York based artist’s debut cassette release the lighthouse itself is the rocket (Breakfast of Champs 2009) it becomes unclear whether you are awake or asleep.

Side A begins with a terrifying lullaby, cooing the listener into a dream-like state whose nightmares are drenched in psychedelia, pot smoke, and pure love, while side B holds lazy beats and puffed out half grooves that make it impossible not to nod your head.  Lyrically the album reads as half-baked poetry, and while sometimes he may sound like a motivational speaker, the clearer message is that this weirdo folkster is merely offering a shoulder to rest our heads on when times get tough.  Without love from friends and family this record would not be possible, and don’t think PSH doesn’t know this.  Signing off at the end of the record almost places him in your room with an acoustic guitar, a pitch shifter, and an old goosebumps mask, performing an intimate show just for you.  From west to east and from all around the world, everyone is a part of THE FMLY and Philip Seymour Hoffman has opened his heart and soul to reveal just how haunting and beautiful this life can be.

What this PSH record lacks in dense layering and intricate melody is gained in intimacy and honesty, each song an impressionable vignette of post-teenage sentience.  Starting today, you can pick up this 30-minute cassette release from Boston’s own Breakfast of Champs Records for just $4 plus shipping.  Also, keep an eye out for the Mirror Universe Tapes compilation out December 5th, featuring a new original track by PSH, and music from Toro Y Moi, Easyboy, and a dozen other equally fantastic artists!

under the counter jumpoff

DROPA is a beat menace out of Boston, as one of the initial releases I guess you could say he’s stirring the Breakfast of Champs crew’s brew. Shifting pitches like out of country bank accounts, the one-dude project has released a slew of free tapes online leading up to October’s Dunk Tank which features remixes of Easyboy, Max Alper, Lord Jeff, and BlackBox as well as an arsenal of heavy artillery and well thought out sampling. You can pick up the cassette here for just $4 (or 3 tapes for $10) and if you’re super into it DROPA will even sell you one of his tunes so that you and your friends can have your way with it. Feel free to hit up his MySpace to hear new tracks as well as download Medicine, Space Madness and Omeba for free! The tunes below are off Medicine.

If you have a sec, def check out the Psychedelic Family supergroup made up of DROPA, Caleb (Truman Peyote), Max Alper, a dude or two from Vitamin Seed and from there I lose track. I played a show with those guys in August and the cops came within fifteen minutes, it was like Black Dice with more man, more instruments and more pedals.

shazaaaam

Super pumped on this new track from Cop Magnet that we’re premiering right hurr right noww. Taking a step back from ‘in your face beats’ and a hyphy ‘tude to say what’s up to a bit more minimalist enterprises and thought provoking landscapes, Cockp Magnet’s Alex Brett is getting a bit more adult on us. Now I’m a fan of both sides and would love to see these lines blur, maybe toss in a little meaningful sample here and there to remind us of the simple things. Lets see where his debut tape on Breakfast of Champs takes us…again, I’m super pumped. This track kills it and the dude isn’t even old enough to drink yet!

breakfast of champs wreck chords

Breakfast of Champs is a sweet new Jamaica Plains-based haven for bedroom players to release their tunes on 7″ and cassette tape; think Mexican Summer with less weed, Woodsist with more-fi and the kickass of Mirror Universe with the collectivity and bond of Underwater Peoples. Just wanted to give a heads up, expect to catch a Truman Peyote split 7″ with Turtle Ambulance in the near future as well as a cassette from Psychedelic Family. Other exciting news is that FMLY alumni Philip Seymour Hoffman and EASYBOY (among others) will also be dropping cassettes via Champs either late this year or early next – add the ChampSpace to keep up to date! This is so exciting, can’t wait to see what these dudes do with 2010.
