These textures are enigmatic, and their intent rests in peace. We gave Peripherysome lovin’ in November before taking it in full exposure, but now having been eagerly dosed with a full amount of the Seven Fields of Aphelion we’re rolling down the largest hill in flavor country. Having taken to the timeless, it’s no surprise that Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Seven Fields has transformed the most minimal of keyboard and synth based compositions to an epic magnitude. There are contours to carry your sorrows, valley to push you through thought, and deep caverns to explore with every chance to follow a new path. Live by nature, and truth will come in Periphery. Pick up your copy from Graveface or from Seven Fields herself.

Thanks to everyone that listened and tuned in. The ‘best of’ show was a lot of fun. Thank you especially to those that told us their favorite music of 2009. Send me your favorite music of 2009 at publiceducation@thefmly.com and we’ll play it on next weeks show!
So without further ado, the play list for the ‘best of 2009′ show.
So with our beloved Black Moth Super Rainbow in a coma and a rumored release from Tobacco on the way it only makes too beautiful sense to see an official release from Seven Fields of Aphelion on the Graveface label. A twelve track release, Periphery will hit the ground running on February 16 and if this little gem is dealt right I’m crossing my fingers for some heavy 2010 Wendy Carlos appreciation…not like I just listened to a bit of the original Tron soundtrack after bumpin’ “Mountain Mary.”
Exploiting the most delicate flower petals, “Mountain Mary” breathes a heavy breath that causes morning dew to weep. The all encompassing mist, the ever fascinating fog…bring it on Periphery, we’re glad to finally have met you. If you missed it, we interviewed Black Moth earlier this year.
To quote J Arthur Keenes for the umpteenth time, “The saw wave’s cutting through me, but I do not mind. It’s the pulse when my heart beats, sharp and refined.” Giving hi’s and lo’s back to the mp3, Tobacco delivers a Space Invaders journey of a remix in the rainbow vomit vein of Black Moth Super Rainbow. I’d keep up with quip references, but I’m trying to listen to Professor Calculus interview Moses Campbell on FMLY’s Public Education right now (listen here).
Two albums which a good number have folks have been scouring the internet for over the years have been re-released via Tobacco’s own Rad Cult imprint for a limited time, and don’t be afraid to call it destiny because they’re appearing on vinyl! “Originally a private press CDR from 2001, The Autumn Kaleidoscope Got Changed was never properly released, and mainly just given out to friends. Some material made it onto the first real BMSR album, Falling Through A Field in 2003, but Autumn’s sound is more haunted and acoustic. Included on a specially etched record is EP, Sing To Us, an even less produced CDR made up of songs left off of the album.” These two collections which were originally under the satanstompingcaterpillars moniker are going to pop into the sold out section all too soon so a here’s a heads up to those interested – the shirt + vinyl deal will only be around for another two weeks. To be a fanboy for a sec I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing Sing To Us, but The Autumn Kaleidoscope Got Changed contributed with ssc’s The Most Wonderfulest Thing to one of my lifetime’s favorite records thus far, Falling Through a Field. Magical music. Cop right here.
…then you’re just not hearing it! Graveface is one of the raddest labels around and to treat our fantasies to such Halloween delight is just too rich – we’re going to get cavities! For the generation that ‘has it all’ we’re lacking one of many things and that’s a new Halloween song, all of this monster mashing has given me bruises and sores.
To this year’s advantage members of Black Moth Super Rainbow, The Appleseed Cast, Dreamend and Casket Girls have collaborated on what will become an annual treat, Marshmallow Ghosts, and in Graveface ideology what you see is only a glimpse of what you get. Coming in the fashion of a picture disc with glow in the dark packaging, the first 96 folks to pre-order (you’ve missed that boat, homie) also are getting hooked up with glow in the dark fangs, a glow button, candy, a pill puzzle, sticker, page from a coloring book, and a personalized toe-tag. Ryan, you’ve outdone yourself this time. The 7″ is
$8 and contains 12mins of music, you can pre-order here (only 500 pressed) and download 4mins below.
If anyone is hitting up All Tomorrow’s Parties this weekend I’ll be performing [in the yeti suit] with Black Moth Super Rainbow on Sunday night. I’ll see what we can do in terms of getting some inside info from folks like Bradford Cox or Noah Lennox, but unfortunately all of the musicians hitting up the fest are my idols in terms of producing incredible live and recorded spectacles of expression and I tend to find myself a bit speechless in that presence…so we’ll see how that goes. If you’re going to be there shoot me an email and we’ll grab a beer or something. Set times after the jump!
It’s 4am and I thought that I was about to go to bed…then this “Die Slow” remix by Tobacco pops up. Standing somewhere between what a “Die Slow” remix should encompass and “Feel The Drip” Tobacco once again delivers an impressive interpretation of a difficult to dissect arrangement. Imagine walking into a 1980s themed club in the year 2300; the smell of stiff clothes, the way which your shoes slide across the floor and the novelty that has become a simulated memory. Tobacco has captured that discomfort, that subconscious dis-ease, and given it a sound.
Last month, HEALTH filmed their music video for “Die Slow” in FMLY’s Out Of Asia warehouse. The video hasn’t been released yet, but take a sneak peek at these photos.
So I was perusing old television shows as I do in my free time and came across a Canadian program from 1979 called You Can’t Do That On Television. Doesn’t that title screen look familiar? Look below.
Anyways, my point isn’t to out where Tobacco finds these great visual representations (that I was pretty convinced was from The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari), but to let you New Yorkers know that Dan Friel of Parts & Labor, Mr. Blank Dogs, and Black Moth Super Rainbow are playing a free show tonight at the Southstreet Seaport. As far as we know, this will be the last time that Black Moth come to NY; if you peeped our interview with Tobacco then you’re caught up on the fact that a new project will be unveiled next year putting Black Moth on indefinite hiatus.
Yeah, we love Why?, yeah, we love Black Moth Super Rainbow, and yeah, we love Broken Social Scene. The only thing that would really make this week a bit more rad is if Animal Collective released a new live tune or remix. Black Moth Super Rainbow have exposed their Grindhouse vid for “Twin Of Myself.” If you caught the group live (or will be in the near future) then you’ll recognize the latter half from their projected visuals. Peep that bloody mess above. Remember when we interviewed Tobacco?
P4k is all over Yoni’s crotch, and I don’t know how I feel about it. I guess they’re building him up to be one of the great voices of our generation and I think the entire act is a bit conceited on their part. That’s not going to stop us from loving to fuck out of Why?, cLOUDDEAD, or Hymie’s Basement and it’s certainly not going to keep us from posting this gorgeous new Why? track, “This Blackest Purse.” More melodies, crooning and mustache fetishism, less getting pussy from disinterested bitches. I’m calling Eskimo Snow as album of the year right now…it’d certainly be appropriate as Alopecia was our number one from ‘08. Also, be careful when googling images for Yoni Wolf as the world’s ugliest vaginas can and will appear in ways you’d never want to see them. Remember when we interviewed Why??
In other news, the Broken Social Scene we know, love and miss with Emily (Metric), Leslie (Feist), Amy (Stars), Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning and the rest of the gang reunited in Toronto on Saturday. Here are Youtube videos for you to kill the rest of your day with. Welcome back homies. Saturday’s live video of “Almost Crimes” after the jump.
We’ve really been missing the Go! Team ’round these parts, so it’s super great to hear that they’re keeping busy. It’s also really great to hear that this “busy” is remixing none other than Black Moth Super Rainbow! Kicking it back to pre-Proof of Youth jams sporting flutes, handclaps, and infectious melodies this remix (or reimagination) comes highly recommended for Black Moth and Go! Team fans. More remixes here and below. Don’t forget to peep our lengthy interview with BMSR right here.
