For those attending night two of Animal Collective in the Prospect Park Bandshell 1.) you’re not seeing Black Dice 2.) not seeing Black Dice support Animal Collective is totally justified because you’re seeing Zomby!
Dipping his toes into the families of Hyperdub/Ramp/Mad Decent/Werk/BrainMath among others, Zomby will release his long-anticipated One Foot Ahead Of The Other EP on August 25 and to celebrate he’s hitting up New York on August 15 with Animal Collective and Los “BOSS” Angeles on September 5; probably for another killer set at the Roxy. “The scheme for One Foot Ahead Of The Other is generally fixed around funkin’ 4/4 patterns nudged, pushed and squeezed into constantly morphing shapes with a fizzing energy centre of UK rave spirit at it’s core, picking up the baton from thousands of raves gone by and running headlong in the future, shooting lazers from every orifice and dripping psychoactive sweat all over the dancefloor” [via]. Above is the PBLKS video for “Helter Skelter” coated in assorted vintage flicks like the zombie vs. shark scene from Lucio Fulci’s ZOMBIE (how good was the music in that film).
YES. REPO has been out for one week now and here’s the video for “Glazin,” easily Black Dice’s most accessible tune and a great intro for new fans. From this point on, get ready to change the way you’ve ever listened to music…or watched music videos for that matter. Way more trippy than the Panda Bear vid we posted a couple weeks back. But seriously, FMLY is not responsible for any seizures. If you like or love what you hear and want to learn more about Black Dice, check out this video from XLR8R. Curious about how Black Dice make such pleasing sounds? Check out Gray’s post from a couple of weeks ago.
Black Dice are some of most creative electronic musicians out there and the gear they use is very important in the creation of their unique brand of experimental music. Their sound relies primarily on sampled sounds and extensive use of effects pedals. Aaron uses an Akai MPC sampler augmented by various effects pedals including a Boss PS-5 pitch shifter. Bjorn uses a custom-made sequencer/filter built into a case emblazoned with the band’s initials which he then runs through an Electro Harmonix Poly Chorus. For his guitar, he uses a Gibson Les Paul put through a Boss DD-5 delay, a PS-5 pitch shifter, and a Zvex Wooly Mammoth fuzz. Eric uses an 8 track recorder and a mini-disk player put through a Boss PS-5 and a Digitech Synth Wah. Black Dice also acknowledge that they use a lot of bizarre sounds such as those made by broken tape decks or by putting a contact mic on a champagne bucket. They also have a new album out April 7 entitled Repothat you should check out.
Black Dice have given us a taste of their forthcoming fifth album, REPO (Paw Tracks), and I could not be more pleased with this sound. Fusing their IDM psychedelia trademark sound with the rising popularity of distant tropical vibes gives us “Glazin,” a Spanish pop song that has been put through the blender that is Black Dice – the two-minute mark gets pretty epic. I don’t know when we can expect more tracks, but I’m really looking forward to this album so I’ll post updates as they come along. REPO is due April 7, I’m psyched to her what the final track “Gag Shack” sounds like!
