beach house at mfnw

Beach House played at Berbati’s – a dark, unwelcoming bar with erratic acoustics (to put it charitably).

Doors open at 2pm, an hour earlier than usual, and VEGA goes on at 4 followed by Beach House at 5 and Grizzly Bear at 6pm. In other words, I’ll see you in line at 10am.

Beach House – Master of None
Neon Indian – Deadbeat Summer
VEGA – Well Known Pleasures
Ghosthustler – Parking Lot Nights

some things last a long time

In the case of Daniel Johnston, some things do last a long time. His influence upon music of the last couple of decades is undeniable, his cult following is equal to that of the Lakers, and his genuine spirit although evolved over time has not once been tainted of its authenticity. Here are a couple of tunes for you to enjoy that derive specifically from “Some Things Last A Long Time” and have been an influence upon your FMLY.

Daniel Johnston – Some Things Last A Long Time

Our feelings for Beach House are well known and Victoria Legrand’s vocals in this piece envelop you in the warmest of blankets, kiss you on the forehead, and lay you on a bed of sand as to pleasure you with mild discomfort.

Beach House – Some Things Last A Long Time

We haven’t talked about Noah23 in a minute, but this track is still one of my favorites. We spun it on Public Education Sunday evening and for those of you tuning in and feeling the Daniel Johnston sample, here ya go! If Noah23 is the future of hip-hop then I’d like to be around for at least another few hundred years. The lyricism of this track still grips me like the topside of a skateboard, mad props to the embedded Dan Johnston references that I’m still picking out.

Noah23 – Faded (feat Ceschi)

and just to throw my favorite tune out there…

Daniel Johnston – Hate Song

Pre-Order Veckatimest On Vinyl

Just got an email from Insound to let you all know that you can now pre-order the new Grizzly Bear album, Veckatimest, on vinyl. Nico Muhly – who composed The Reader soundtrack – contributes to the album as well as Beach House d.a.r.l.i.n.g. Victoria Legrand. If you want some grizzy bee in the meantime, multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor (not this guy) plays sax on Beirut’s “On A Bayonet,” hot off the March of the Zapotec press. Beach House and Grizzly Bear play SXSW in three weeks, FMLY will be in attendance partying our booties off with The Death Set, Spank Rock, Japanther, and everyone else we love. Big ups to our boys at The Tape, when I google’d Veckatimest they were up top just under P4k.

Just to remind you all of the genius of GB, Dan Rossen’s “Two Weeks” keyboard part is a total cop from “Still D.R.E.” Videos after the jump.

Round Robin!

I don’t know if you guys are quite ready for this one yet, but allow me to introduce you to Baltimore’s Dan Deacon curated Round Robin. In the spirit of this year’s Fuck Yeah Fest Round Robin has become a touring performance art piece, or a music festival if that’s all you wanna make out of it. While you prepare for the show of the year, here’s a little FAQ:

WHAT IS A ROUND ROBIN SHOW LIKE?

The format of the show is as follows:
-All the bands set up at the same time along the perimeter of the room with the audience in the center
-Each band does one song per round, no breaks, back to back to back etc., until the show is completed
-There is no headliner or opener, no front row or back of the room

The 60+ people driving around by only veggie powered vehicles in a community on wheels. Curated by Dan Deacon, the tour includes bands from Floristree, Wham City, Tarantula Hill, The Bank, Comfort Dome and other Baltimore music homes

WHAT IS EYES NIGHT? FEET NIGHT?

The tour is divided into two nights. The first night (Eyes Night) is a mixture of folk, noise, theatrics, improvisation, music that is spiritual, dreamy etc. The second night (Feet Night) is devoted to music that you dance, thrash or otherwise move around to and is a mixture of electronic, punk, hardcore, dance, and rock and roll musics.

Eyes Night line-up of bands:

beach house
creepers
ed schrader
jana hunter
lesser gonzalez alvarez
lexie mountain boys
nautical almanac
santa dads
teeth mountain
wzt hearts

Feet Night line-up of bands:

adventure
blood baby
dan deacon
the deathset
dj dog dick
double dagger
future islands

also there will be bands from this group, dubbed the “Weird Round” peppered into the line-up for both nights:

sports ghosts

Before you take another look at that last post let me bring up some music that you’re probably not seeing on every other blog and hearing about from every other friend with an iPhone and/or an M.I.A. shirt; the two are definitely mutally exclusive. Here’s a taste of my best of ‘08 with more to come so please download with care.

It has literally taken years for Baltimore’s Beach House to grow on me, but they have and in a big way. Devotion was the breakout album much needed that I highly suggest all fans of The Velvet Underground, Grizzly Bear and The Kinks go out and buy. It’s so difficult to pick a song from a flawless album, but here goes nothing…
Beach House – D.A.R.L.I.N.G.

I know, I know, Adele was on Entertainment Tonight and has been all over TV…well fuck that because I don’t watch television other than Lost and she certainly has not been there. Adele has one incredible voice that should be shared with the world, it’s just unfortunate that her presence is overshadowing Kate Nash who only rose to American fame earlier this year. Battle it out broads, we love ya. But seriously, the first time I heard this song I cried. Kinda like the first time I heard Kate Nash’s “We Get On.” Perfect for ‘those’ kind of mixtapes.
Adele – First Love

Adem has been a love of mine since his release of Love And Other Planets in 2006. This year the english folk artist and Fridge member went the way of covers with his release of Takes or as I call it, Adem Sings The Classics. I can’t stress enough how important it is to know of Adem or how badly everyone who gives a shit about contemporary music needs to have Love And Other Planets. Here’s a jam from Takes, it’s a cover of The Breeders. Fun fact: Adem went to school with members of Hot Chip, Burial and many other talented individuals.
Adem – Invisible Man

Air France’s No Way Down EP can’t even be described in the English language. I love it. Everyone who hears it loves it. I’m just going to say it…unless Panda Bear, Blink-182, Marky-Kate Olsen or Animal Collective release an album before the end of ‘08, this will be my favorite album. With such lush compositions and orchestral backdrops I have no idea why you’re not hearing Air France from each direction. Post-rave bliss…
Air France – No Excuses

Thanks ‘08
