Our summer heartthrob Babe Rainbow and our new pals Basketball have far more than their Canadian heritage to talk about. Found this collab via Pinglewood and the further my jaw drops the more I think that my eyes will never roll into place from the back of my head. Yeah, it’s one of those.
“This song frustrated the hell out of me,” he told me. “I wrote the melody and layered sounds pretty quickly but couldn’t find a percussive pattern I liked. I’ve tried so many different drum loops and was never been happy with it.
“I couldn’t scrap it though, I thought the music was beautiful. It’s not as dark as my other stuff, more heartbreaking, melancholic. I honestly make music for myself so if it affects me I’m doing something right. So my friends in Basketball did the percussion for me on this song. It’s called Proper.” [via Pinglewood]
Just listening to our favorite sub-whamp sound characteristic in dubstep and applying it to a fairly minimal arrangement gets me pretty excited. There’s a new language brewing up in America’s crown and no doubt we’re gonna hear much more from it. I’m going to toss in a Noah23 track into this post, another Canadian that we love. Babe Rainbow has got curves in all the right places. That’s right, Cameron Reed aka Babe Rainbow is an instance of dubstep finding home in North America and sounding fantastic! Creating anxious cries of Chia pets wanting so badly to grow, Reed captures the stages of evolution in his pieces – from concept to result we hear the complexity of growth, whamp of yearning, and thud of arrival. What Reed has also successfully accomplished is not only bringing dubstep to North America, but North America to dubstep. Taking Wavves‘ “Weed Demon” and dressing it up in the most magical costume of beats and drops, the all too familiar tune has gained new meaning…I guess you can even go as far as saying that Babe Rainbow has changed weed.
