haunting and drawling

We are so excited about this show. Kria Brekkan (former lead singer of Mum) and Drawlings will be coming to McWorld on March 24th. Drawlings is the sister of Avey Tare’s Animal Collective and the family blood runs deep as her musicbox-tickertoy music has the same hauntingly beautiful quality. Kria Brekkan has the ability to pull you deep down inside the earth and open up your soul. Her music hits a note with me that goes straight into me. It is uncomfortable but leaves me longing for more. This is going to be a really spectacular show and, personally, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

animal collecting

We live in a post-Animal Collective society, so who apart from Kanye West doesn’t know who Avey Tare is by now? I’ll save my Terrestrial Tones post for another day, I’m still wierded out that Dave has a Wikipedia page… Anyways, a ways back Avey put out a split 12″ with David Grubbs titled Crumbling Land, in short it kicks serious night-timing ass. Now I don’t have the actual record because I’m not quite that cool, but to make up for it here’s an extra tune called “Judy Biworker” which as far as I know isn’t released on anything. For those who don’t have any of Avey’s solo work, Terrestrial Tones or Pullhair Rubeye (Avey + Kria) hopefully these tunes will inspire you to dig a little deeper.

Weekend Update

A lot went down in the indie music community this weekend and slowly but surely I’ll catch you up on all you need to know.

First, Santogold released a new song via RCRD LBL that does not appear on her album; I’m assuming it’s a b-side.
Go here to download it.

Los Angeles’ No Age added all tracks from their forthcoming Nouns to be streamed on their MySpace.

Are Animal Collective racists? Click here to read a load of bullshit.

Kria Brekkan aka wife of Avey Tare (David Portner) from Animal Collective aka ex-Mum member has released a b-side from Wildering entitled “Gömul Vísa Um Vorið.”

CSS released a new song, “Rat Is Dead,” from their forthcoming Donkey. I’ll post both Kria and CSS’s tracks tomorrow as it’s going on 4:30am and there’s still much to do.

I’ll leave you with my Coachella highlight and maybe the best live experience of my lifetime…even considering Daft Punk. For some people there are The Beatles or Metallica, but for me there is Animal Collective and even more, Panda Bear. Being able to see “Comfy In Nautica” develop unexpectedly before my eyes with my best friends right beside me was possibly one of my greatest life experiences. Now that can sight can be shared via Youtube. Please enjoy this clip of Animal Collective playing Panda Bear’s “Comfy In Nautica.”

Stay tuned for tomorrow when I introduce you to L.A.’s enchanting Pocahaunted.

My Last Animal Collective Post For A While

I realize that I post A LOT about Animal Collective, especially as of late. Currently I’m writing my final paper on the human perception of “Peacebone,” the first track from Strawberry Jam, so until anything major happens in the AC camp, this will be it for some time.

What I did want to briefly say – as I’ve said many times- is that Animal Collective absolutely blew me the fuck out of the water at Coachella. Unleashing an arsenal of new music at Coachella it was a monumental event to hear Panda Bear break out into solo and deliver “Comfy In Nautica,” a track that defined my 2007. Animal Collective has big things to come in ‘08 but in ‘09 we will hopefully see a new release from Panda as well as Avey; I’m also curious to see what Geologist has in store as his role in the group has become more distinguished since the release of Strawberry Jam. AC closed their set with the enchanting “Brother Sport” where you can see much influence from Panda’s move to Portugal as tropical sounds overwhelm the chorus in an ecstasy inducing manner. Please Avey, pass me the Strawberry Jam, prep the Water Curses EP and let me dig into what’s next!
