I’ve never kept my eyes open for an Atlas Sound remix before, the two really just haven’t crossed my mental paths. So props to the French duo going by CRACKS for shooting me an email this morning and expanding my mind. Not only did these beats give me a much needed start to a pretty easy-going day, but also one more release to look forward to. Keep your ears tuned for a 4 track EP coming out soon, self-described as as a collection of synthesized pop anthems for romantic clubbers. Makes me smile.
Thanks to everyone that listened and tuned in. The ‘best of’ show was a lot of fun. Thank you especially to those that told us their favorite music of 2009. Send me your favorite music of 2009 at publiceducation@thefmly.com and we’ll play it on next weeks show!
So without further ado, the play list for the ‘best of 2009′ show.
Bradford Cox, you’ve done it again. The new Atlas Sound album, Logos, drops October 20th on 4AD, despite the 2008 beatdown with a pirate. Thank your lucky stars Bradford isn’t one to hold a grudge, because we all need a little bit of the thought-provoking, dreamy ambiance that is Atlas Sound.
Logos is a candy album, full of hollow-yet-fufilling songs that drift along and pull you back into that very odd dream you had a few nights ago, all the while provoking the deepest parts of your mind to question your interpretation of reality. While at times reminiscent of Brian Wilson or Panda Bear (Noah Lennox is actually featured on the song Walkabout), the album does not neglect the electronic lo-fi bits that we all know and love. This album would be most fitting while riding upon a winged horse. Remember that for next time, you know?
““Animal Collective confirmed to get first officially licensed Grateful Dead sample! “Phil Lesh loved the track…”
This was an inevitable confirmation, but now that it’s official we’re just that much closer to receiving an intended version of “Blue Sky.” So ready for this groove.
I’ve been anxiously awaiting Atlas Sound’s Logos for a while now, but after the announcement of a tune with Panda Bear…well that’s just not the kind of news that you can bear waiting for. According to a P4k interview with Bradford Cox, Noah Lennox taught him how to sample:
“I toured for a period in Europe with Animal Collective, whose band dynamic was very inspirational to be around. On the bus, we often played improvised iPod games. We would take turns formulating a theme or unifying concept and then play three songs. The goal would be for everyone to try and figure out the theme. During one of these games, someone played ‘What Am I Going to Do’ by the Dovers. I was amazed at the hook– a weird organ thing with drums and electric bass. I mentioned to Noah [Lennox] that someone should really sample that riff. He agreed and he taught me a little about sampling and matching up beats. This ended up as the collaborative effort ‘Walkabout’. “
totally unrelated, harvey danger is dead or i guess you can say they’re “running underground with the moles, diggin’ holes.” Adios Flagpole Sitta. Classic throwback vid after the jump!
As I said before when looking at Psychedelic Horseshit and Wavves, it’s always interesting to hear about the relationships between musicians and watch how they form. Funny enough, it seems like everyone has an interest in Wavves including Bradford Cox. Fortunately, this one is drama-free. “Weed Demon” can be found on the latest Atlas Sound micromix on the Deerhunter/Atlas Sound blog that we love so much. Tracklisting after the jump, it’s a dope one as usual. Click that blog link a couple of sentences ago to download the mix.
“round the world like a yo-yo walk ya dog fetch. connect four, spectacular in a scrabble session. paper airplanes turn your jenga into 9/11. we stay hungry just like hippos. counting monopoly money, we’re fuckin’ rich yo.”
Noah23 recently gave an album of rarities from this year away via MySpace. Here’s the mediafire link and I highly recommend the download. Noah23 continues to fascinate me, especially with his open admittance of how drugs affect his music and his unusual hippie upbringing [for a Canadian]. His cultural references are spot on and for those who haven’t began listening to his music I suggest you do so.

Don’t forget to pick up a copy of Rock Paper Scissors from thecatacombz.com or hold off until the vinyl is released. There are some really sick beats and flows, but I’ve still gotta recommend Quicksand to any fan of modern versatile hip-hop.
An album I never talked about this year is Dosh’s Wolves and Wishes released in May via anticon. With contributions from Bonnie ’Prince’ Billy, Andrew Bird, Fog, Odd Nosdam and the usual suspects, Mike Lewis and Jeremy Ylvisaker. A FMLY review of the album will be up relatively soon, but if you haven’t had a chance to check out the album it makes a great holiday gift. Visit the DoshFMLY website here and pick up some cheap CD’s, vinyl and other goodies.

Don’t forget to listen to Alice’s Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie today. After all, it’s Thanksgiving!
And lastly, Jeffrey Lewis has made a history of Rough Trade video that I highly recommend. Check it out!
FMLY isn’t really that Thanksgiving festive, but we certainly enjoy a great homecooked meal. Have a great dinner everyone and if you get something out of it then more power to ya. I’ll be a bit outside of New York City in Warwick romping around in the forest if anyone wants to come join. Don’t forget to RSVP to our event we’ve overwhelmed you with HERE.
Here’s a new hauntingly beautiful track from Bradford Cox’s solo moniker, Atlas Sound. Pick this track up on the Amsterdam midi 7″, virtual download here.
Animal Collective’s Geologist created a beautiful 42 minute mix for tourmate and bud Bradford Cox’s (Deerhunter/Atlas Sound) blog. It’s definitely a unique mix of Thin Lizzy, The Mamas and the Papas, J Dilla and more; a great playlist to wake up to. Read the post and check the tracklist here. For further Animal Collective studying, here’s a Panda Bear mix and here’s an Avey Tare mix. Catch up with the gang Deakin!
If anyone has The Byrds’ “Dolphin’s Smile,” please let FMLY know. It’d be nice to have a mp3 of just that tune. Related, Deerhunter’s new album, Microcastle, has leaked six months in advance to its release.
Not related, but interesting. iTunes has made the single of the week, “Blind,” by Hercules & Love Affair. Go read the user reviews, they’re absolutely hilarious.
