This may come off ironic, it may come off as pathetic, but I’m totally sincere when I say that Alicia Keys wrote my hook of the year. Her chorus in “Empire State of Mind” not only blew every tune on the radio off-air, but enlightened me to virtues of taking one’s voice seriously. Mad props, Alicia Keys, maaaaaaad props. Colbert joined in with Alicia on his show dropping an all-too-true verse in the absence of Jay-Z, and damn, the combination comes out with more energy and originality than “Empire State of Mind” will ever achieve on its own.
