part a — part b — part c

Split into three chapters, American History Sex provides three radical perspectives on the theme of inherent progress in maturation and becoming a part of the natural order among the self. Each chapter serves as coinciding explorations into time, and the methods in which varying applications of sounds can invalidate temporality altogether. Chapters A, B, and C are a discussion which sum two years of Max’s life beginning in the autumn of ’09, and it is up to the listener to take position among the present dialogue.
Part A [download] is a presentation of sounds that coincide to become songs, both voice and instrumentation becoming the victim of oppression by the other. Lyrically, the narrative is an assault upon the body and what is therefor psychically perceived to be truth when a visual reality has failed. The sky which humanity knows as a ceiling has become an empirical storm, and it is all we can do to stand by one another and develop our own eyes within the clouds above. These sounds are a single beacon, all of which bear equal importance, in the rallying cries for assembly.
Part B [download] is a pasture of free range compositions, or rather compartmentalized communities that consciously bear relevance to one another. Drum circles gather among the shadows of great trees while up the hill the boy who lays on the keys of his piano cries in his sleep. Hindustani ragas permeate our foundation as we approach aural temporality at the macroscopic level, charting melodies for architecture and belief in reshaping the visual.
Part C [download] is deliberately physical, a union for progression within a wall-to-wall piano composition. The revolution is subtle, but not without fantastic and whimsical texture. This is not a “part c” in which time has decreed an exponential linear progression, but a “part c” that is just as woven within “part a” and “part b” as “part b” and “part a” are as a component of “part c”. Here is the choreography for which our legs will want to follow, now understand where to teach them patience and restraint without neglecting the pleasures of experience.
Exposure to these three chapters is an incredibly intimate and seductive experience. What is it like to crawl through these headphones and momentarily coexist with the representation of these thoughts… with this friends’ performance of mind? American History Sex is a liberation, we’ll see you on the way through.

D.I.V.A. [Dillon Issues Vocal Assault] is one way to describe the flare that Dillon brings to his catalogue of charming obscurity and loving hostility. As the voice behind his Alaskas project previous releases have heard Dillon hint towards this direction of heat waved dreamspaces, but as the first release since relocating from Seattle to Brooklyn FMLY RCRDS is beyond stunned to offer [in collaboration with AKSENT] seventy-seven minutes of meditated aural focus and distraction. From Dillon, “This is a gift and a dedication to creation. This autumn is ours. Together, we will pursue production. Come enter the 14 worlds I’ve created as the slumlord of soundscapes.” We’ll see you there, or maybe you’ll see us with the boombox at yoga for the people. For donations and higher quality files we refer you to AKSENT.

Drifting between lucid and hazy textures, Emily Reo‘s Minha Gatinha is the initial slumber on a digestive system filled with Nyquil. Orlando’s siren and our own FMLY darling released this tape in an edition of fifty via A Dracula Records in September of 2009, but judging by the amount of love we’ve tossed her way it feels like this tape has been with us all of our sound adoring lives. Self-recorded in her home of Winter Park, Minha Gatinha is eleven tracks of the most dreamy…the most heart-wrenching…the most loving embraces. An entire tape of my favorite tunes back to back.
Witch Mtn is Emily’s 2010 EP followup on our bff’z Breakfast of Champs Records. Swamp smoke exhaling from the lungs to be inhaled back through the seeping sounds of tape hiss, sunset vibes have rarely sounded so high. Three tracks on the aside which flow alongside each other as friends, followed by two tracks on the bside [Witch Mtn I & II] that look at each other as a muddy reflection – one to prove that beauty exists in this world and one to demand that it can be taken away.

Ascending the lessons we learned from IDM in the 90s, Orlando’s Dark Sea Of Awareness surpasses the intensity of his name with delightful ambient ballads and a strong support of good taste of pop sensibility. The sounds of the energy flow in batteries charging are evident throughout DSoA’s 10track self-titled release, and his live shows are no less than transcending whether they take place in your pal’s living room or inside of a bike shop. Though powerful enough to move a mass of observers, these jams are subtle in their introversion and although I recommend taking them to a park with your buds on a sunny day I first advise taking this record on a bike ride – and make sure to bring your good headphones. Ringing a delicate balance in the weight these sounds carry, listen loud and let your mind absorb nostalgic rich tonality.

PROFESSOR CALCULUS are a defining moment in my experience of a collective Los Angeles, mapped with lines connecting with Nephews and Koalacaust as well. PROF CALC are friends from the house party to the streets, no fear runs in Caleb Stone’s blood to reclaim some urban space whether it be a parking lot, alley, or courtyard. Their third release this year, CHARE, bears six tracks of intensely instrumental rollercoasters to be taken as the part two for RHINOCEROS.

Since we met our bros in Truman Peyote one year ago to the week, life has gotten exponentially wilder. As a record and as an ideal, Light-Lightning was the sound to our close of 2009 and has only expanded meaning upon 2010. Its abstraction to earlier form and rooted belief in the yeswave has formed a community and support from Jamaica Plains, Massachussetts all the way to the southern tip of Florida, and by the end of 2010 this love will tangibly expand through to Los Angeles. Creating internal melody and earworm rhythms, this record holds unique grounds of listening and friendship between us and it is with the greatest pleasure that we present you Light-Lightning as a free download. But that’s not all! Included with your download are TP recordings from 2008, Catalog: 1/14 – 5/12, so dip in and ride the yeswave.

Our old frnd MICKEY MICKEY ROURKE (who some may know better as Neon Navajo) has been pumping out the jams so hard this year we’ve hard trouble keeping up. Miller has seriously outdown himself with the third release this year of Vision Quest – a collaborative record with Canadian dreamweaver Lester Brown; cue MICKEY BROWN. Vision Quest carries its highs and lows spanning emotion, genre, and grappling influence from some of our favorite contemporaries. Really, it just makes us feel like taking those long walks without any direction. You know that feeling you get when you are on heavy prescription tranquilizing drugs and the world feels like it is slowly turning in impossible ways? That massive range of textures gives you the the ability to travel anywhere, embark for Vision Quest.

Aldous Huxley said, “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” The Spookfish finds texture and imagery in a familiar arrangement of keyboards and digitized drums, amplifying what is already felt into a new harmonic language. 山 offers twenty-three pieces, half recorded in Korea and the other half in New York. We hope you keep these as close to your fingertips and earlobes as we do!

“The aesthetic of acoustic/electric experimental project Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is actually of the brilliant creative collective The FMLY, is hazy and raw, druggy and euphoric. Sweeping atmospherics the likes of micromagician’s wash over Tobacco-style vocal blending, loops akin to High Places‘ and singing that sounds like it was recorded in the middle of a sun-drenched desert ‘Spring Break 2011′ starts off a gentle, breathy acoustic guitar dusk porch jam and ends a clangy, percussive and jittery rap absorbed in a field of crickets. Odd chimes feed into gentle wavy keyboard melodies in ‘Feel My Bones, See My Cones’. Listening to PSH, there’s an eeriness that could be lost in sterile surroundings – it’s perfect at night by candlelight. The strength of the songs come from their unwashed heart, dirty glee and transgressive symphonies of simple melodies in awkward arrangements. Lulled as if into a dream, PSH rids you of your woes. It’s my new favourite night time music, a treasure to turn up loud and have consume you.”

When it comes to our Los Angeles pals I just feel like a victim of Cupid’s arrow, so proud of the music that our frnds are jamming out. Santa Cruz/S.F. transplants Koalacaust ring this oh so true, having played with Mischief Brew, Paul Baribeau, and Andrew Jackson Jihad these youngins are not only living the folk-punk dream but cultivating some of the dankest tunes around. This entire record is ab solid with genuine balls out jams that need to be sung along to. Koalacaust have been everywhere with us, including many of our firsts; our first fmly show, thank you come again, inciting of a riot, and our third fmly ride. We’ve shared some intimate moments and joints with our relocated Bay Area-bros and it’s an honor to offer their debut CD available for a free download.

no longer available by request of totz slackz, but look out for their debut full length on marshall teller!
According to Child Bite, “Total Slacker are as cute as buttons,” blending together not only the most bud-heaviest of beach-pop jams but the badass appeal of just being in a band and having the best time. Turning up the reverb until you can’t tell if the banter between songs is still the last tune, the ’slacks are writing uber catchy melodies and the occasional true story about video store rental bros, pandas and basically being way chill. Look out for these tunes and more on a cassette release from FMLY homies Mirror Universe Tapes in early 2010.

Fighting the forces of public noise permit injustices since Nov ’08, Professor Calculus have built a reputation through LA’s bike scene by wrecking parking lot nights and n00bz 34R dRumZ throughout the greater Los Angeles. Notorious for shooting the shit in back alleys, rooftops, house parties and some health code violating kitchens, Caleb Stone and the rest of the professors fill the voids of living spaces with their instrumental delay-ridden-tap-metal rock…if you’re confused now, they have two bassists. Basically, this is a free album digitally (available above) and you can pick up a physical copy at any FMLY or Professor Calculus show as of November 17. We’re all stoked!

The sounds of Philip Seymour Hoffman serve as an abstract journal where memories, events, people and places take on an audible being. A selection of moments from a 20-year old spanning exactly one year, from November ’08 through November ’09, recounting nights of desire, frustration, questioning and way too much fun. The bro behind the Goosebumps mask [who prefers to leave his real name out of this] thanks you for taking the time to listen and hopes that you find something to relate to in these tunes, they’re each more personal than they should be. All tunes on this tape were recorded between the hours of 2am and 5am in a 7′x10′ New York bedroom and the majority of tracks, including lyrics, were improvised during recording. Fire Island is a free digital release via FMLY while The Lighthouse Itself Is The Rocket is a cassette tape with new tunes that drops Novemeber 24 on Breakfast of Champs.
