Our BFFz in Total Slacker play the Cake Shop tomorrow to raise funds for the trek down to southby, so if you’re in New Yawk then make your way over to catch ‘em with Big Troubles, Darlings, Sundelles, and more! I slept on a couch recently in the home of a Big Troubles member, so go thank him for me. More info here.

aaahh, real monsters

All the way from Ireland, Bobby was one of the first dudes to hit us up about being part of the fmly back in the day with his infectiously whistlable Dublin Duck Dispensary project, and it comes with a great smile to spread word that DDD is now No Monster Club! With tunes as fun as these names, we’re way excited to pass on that No Monster Club is dropping a 20track double EP Tropical Decibels Volumes One and Two on Cass/Flick Recordings in a few weeks. Why the change in name? Bobby says, “I HATE MONSTERS.”

No Monster Club – Flying Colours

Dublin Duck Dispensary – Little World Outside

ancient weed

Half Machine Records are putting out a lil’ 7″ that we’re stoked on, way to go Weed Diamond and Ancient Crux! You can pre-order it in the euro, or just hit up sxsw and nab one in person.

anyone up for a RL meetup?

The latter half of the 20th century saw the built environment merged with media space, and architecture taking on new roles related to branding, image and consumerism. Augmented reality may re-contextualize the functions of consumerism and architecture, and change in the way in which we operate within it.

Two things have seriously been vying for my attention the past few days: chat roulette and augmented reality. Pretty much every other conversation I’ve had involves one or both of those concepts. And each one gives me the willies in its own way, but augmented reality, “where data from the network overlays your view of the real world” – turning your palm into a phone, your glasses into a data-infused, semi-transparent screen, and (oh shit!) your body invisible – won the battle with flying colors. Literally, figuratively, whateveritively [via].

The video above is Keiichi Matsuda’s off-putting visualization of what our future as cyborgs might hold. If you’re into it, you can check out this fascinating, comprehensive talk + live demos (!) on the future of AR.

When it comes to our Los Angeles pals I just feel like a victim of Cupid’s arrow, so proud of the music that our frnds are jamming out. Santa Cruz/S.F. transplants Koalacaust ring this oh so true, having played with Mischief Brew, Paul Baribeau, and Andrew Jackson Jihad these youngins are not only living the folk-punk dream but cultivating some of the dankest tunes around. This entire record is ab solid with genuine balls out jams that need to be sung along to. Koalacaust have been everywhere with us, including many of our firsts; our first fmly show, thank you come again, inciting of a riot, and our third fmly ride. We’ve shared some intimate moments and joints with our relocated Bay Area-bros and it’s an honor to offer their debut CD available for a free download.

chillun’

Just got a confirm from Caleb that the records are in and pre-orders are now up and sprinting for the Truman Peyote 7″ split with Turtle Ambulance. This is tight. Order yours here or come to the FMLY x Breakfast of Champs party on Friday at Surreal Estate in Brooklyn and pick it up in the cardboard and vinyl flesh! We’ll talk more about the party this week, but Truman Peyote, Many Mansions, Max Alper, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Cop Magnet are rawkin’ the jams all night. Big ups to ohmyrockness for featuring the show at the top of their page! Truman Peyote and Many Mansions’ 12″ split is on the way in the next few weeks.

not the final respects

I’m still not quite sure what can really be said, other than Gowns has been one of the most badass, honest, and intellectually challenging group of folks that we could have hoped to have become lost within. As we say rest in peace, it will forever be an honor and a great confusion to have their final performance be at our fmly zine fundraiser. Here’s to you Ema, Ezra, and Corey. Good luck.

Here’s Gowns’ final tune clocking in at seventeen minutes. Fucking gorgeous.

Gowns – Stand (via IMPOSE)

what do i do with you

So Japanther is dropping a new record on March 3 entitled Rock N’ Roll Ice Cream. Maybe the ice cream man will be at the album release show? Here’s a brand spankin’ newbie for ya!

Japanther – Spread So Thin

the ways we are fucked

The video maybe a joke but the message is very real. This some how went largely unnoticed when the Supreme Court decided that campaign financing can now be unlimited. Corporations have been granted personhood. This means that in the next election, you could be voting a corporation into office. The Constitution and Bill of Rights were written to ensure that the American people are defended against abuse but how much will our vote count now against the vote of a multibillion dollar corporation. We turn a blind eye to issues like this and we are asking for a corporate slave state. Soon a company like Haliburton could literally own the United States. It is time to call your representatives and let them know America is not for sale.

get active

Its been a minute since we checked in with our boy Active Child, but last time we saw him was when he was rocking his second show ever at day two of fmly fest…literally bringing tears to the embrace of cheeks. Since then Pat Grossi has dropped a cassette, Sun Rooms on Mirror Universe Tapes, a 7″ single on Transparent, received remix work from the minds of Summer Camp and Pina Chulada, and on top of all of that we nominated him as one of three of the best emerging acts in Los Angeles in the Deli’s artists of ‘09 poll. Can you guess who our other two nominations went to? If it’s not obvious enough…Professor Calculus and Evan Voytas, because that’s how we roll! Let’s dish out some of these tunes, and redirect you to where you can cop the physicals.

-Vote for anyone in the Deli’s Artists of ‘09 poll, but we recommend that you vote for a FMLY submission. Again, FMLY nominations were Active Child, Professor Calculus, and Evan Voytas. And voting is one-click, I didn’t realize that and accidentally voted for the wrong band…ha. Do that here.
-You can purchase Pat’s 6-track debut, Sun Rooms, over at Mirror Universe for $5. Just click here.
-You can figure out how to purchase the Transparent released 7″ with “Voice Of An Old Friend” and “She Was A Vision” right here (free downloads too), but it won’t be available in the US (courtesy of Leftist Nautical Antiques) until February.

and here are those remixes!
Active Child – She Was A Vision (Pina Chulada remix)
Active Child – Voice Of An Old Friend (Summer Camp Bedford Falls remix)
and i just came across this. sounds about right, but i can’t totally confirm anything…
