snow babes for good daze

There’s nothing quite as soothing as walking through a blizzard listening to a song that graces your ears as softly as an individual spec of snow dying from above. Vocals smeared through landscapes, washed colors with scenic visions, and settled memories left in your largest boot footprint. Here are some babes to toss on a playlist, then go out and seize your nature.

Active Child – Wilderness
Grouper – Wind and Snow

a mixtape from memoryhouse

cred: sam cardow

cred: sam cardow

We had really wanted to do a “theme mix”, and in it’s infancy, this was aimed towards Valentine’s Day. Fortunately, we got distracted within the first few minutes and decided to stick with a soundtrack that focused on mood rather than theme. Besides, if you really want someone telling you how to feel on Valentine’s Day, then I suggest going to see Valentine’s Day: The Movie this weekend (seriously though, do not go see Valentines Day: The Movie this weekend).

This mix contains some of our favorite ambient musicians, as well as some great indie rock hailing from our neck of the woods. The overall mood evokes a delirious, introspective atmosphere that can be enjoyed while driving alone, or laying in bed with another. In a sense, it represents the soft, diffused light from the sky when the sun is below the horizon, existing briefly in a liminal state between day and night.

amanda huggankiss mix

Two of my favorite finds of ‘09, Run DMT and Happy Family (both outta Baltimore), teamed up for a chill end of the year mixtape. Filled with enough cycling echo and reverb to drown out the remaining December, the dudes are updating Gregorian chant repertoire like it ain’t no thang. Download the “Amanda Huggankiss mix” right here, and get prepped for a super well-deserved nap.

happy family – cups
happy family – going to
RUN DMT – mad weed
RUN DMT – let it load

ozymandias amalgamate

I like electronic music. That’s a very superhero-ey thing to like, I suppose, isn’t it? I like avant-garde music in general. Cage, Stockhausen, Penderecki, Andrew Lang, Pierre Henry. Terry Riley is very good. Oh, and I’ve heard some interesting new music from Jamaica…a sort of hybrid between electronic music and reggae. It’s a fascinating study in the new musical forms generated when a largely pre-technological culture is given access to modern recording techniques without the technological preconceptions that we’ve allowed to accumulate, limiting our vision. It’s called dub music. – Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias

Nerd out with me for a second: I finished reading Watchmen a hot minute ago and it gave me the perfect excuse to throw together some super electronic jams and kick off this week’s end. Boys Noize will be playing at The Mighty in San Francisco on Saturday. I’ll be there. You should come. We can bust out some (polite) superhero dance moves.

A-Trak – Boys Noize Rmx
Miike Snow – Animal (Treasure Fingers Rmx)
Trash80 – Missing You

rain

David J. Nightingale

David J. Nightingale

It’s been raining in Irvine lately – which is crazy for this early in October (Thank El Nino for that one) – and a complete A-side from the stagnant impeccable nature of our usual fall weather. So this morning I couldn’t muster enough effort to actually make it to class and stayed at home listening to rainy songs. I want to share some of them with you.

Tom Waits – Rain Dogs
Mount Eerie – Voice in Headphones
Animal Collective – Bluish
Little Wings – Light Green Leaves
Led Zeppelin – The Rain Song

And what quite possibly might be my favorite song ever.

Tom Waits – Take It With Me

baby day, hurray

Ah, we’re super excited! Kim, Sophie’s mom, is in the hospital as I type this introducing what’s soon to be the cutest babe of the year (pictured above) via perez. Since I can’t be physically excited with you guys I hope that the tot can rock out to these tunes in the meantime. And to our way loved and soon-to-be born (born at 6:31 PST) Lucie Beatrice Harlow Glover, happy birthday lil’ friend. Try and hold out a few months before getting a facebook. If the internet is still around in a decade or so and you come across this page remind me for old time’s sake – then I’ll take ya to grab an ice cream.

here’s an inaugural track to introduce the playlist (don’t think a baby would dig a live AC tune).
Animal Collective – Baby Day (live at Other Music)

and here is the Baby Day Mixtape (download entire tape! 72MB), full tracklist and some individual downloads after the jump.

this is how we trip

Psychedelics can be a touchy subject for some so I won’t carry on with this, but considering the weather and how energizing this summer was (it’s fall now, i think) it’s pretty tough to currently reject the idea of taking a brief nutrition from reality. In honor of our last playlist which was a compilation of weed summer jamz I have a ‘working your way towards psychedelics’ mix for ya called this is how we trip. No confusion, this is not intended to be a playlist to listen to while you trip as it’s way too self-aware but in the most appropriate manner I hope that it serves to get you in the mood. When you do get there, just make sure to have some vinyl or albums that you love to listen to all the way through prepped for action.

Safe and happy travels…

Wax Tailor – Hypnosis Theme (feat. Marina Quaisse)
Animal Collective – Must Be A Treeman
Hear Hums – Monday Or Any Day
Neon Indian – Should have taken acid with you
