just for kicks

The fly honeys from the Splinters had their new album drop yesterday and we here at FMLY are puuuuumped. These new tunes still make you wanna boogie down, jump around, and chant along à la Splintered Bridges – but Kick has also got some songs up it’s sleeve that’ll give you a serious dose of gooseflesh. I’d recommend grabbing a convertible, some sunshine, and some sweet shades before putting this on your car stereo. I’d then recommend driving that convertible to Austin and singing along with them at our very own Thank You, Come Again.

In the meantime, director Natalie Tsui’s deadly adorable music video for “Mysterious” does a super job of curbing our Splinters cravings. It’s kinda like Hitchcock on speed, but waaaay cuter.

You can head to the splinterspace or go straight Double Negative records, just for Kicks! (Hah. Get it?)

friendship opportunity

If there’s an active cassette player in the house then EASYBOY’s Friends needs to be in that. Eric Farber, one-half of the already epic Truman Peyote, has been cranking out solid hits and remixes making sure to hold his own strongly up in Toronto. We’ve been flying the Easyboy flag good and strong for a while now, and are stoked to say that you can catch Easyboy at SXSW’s first taste of FMLY’s Thank You Come Again on the afternoon of March 20. He totally rawked it at our CMJ show in October. Spooky Town has been super rad to put Friends online for a free download, but I recommend purchasing it as well!

When it comes to our Los Angeles pals I just feel like a victim of Cupid’s arrow, so proud of the music that our frnds are jamming out. Santa Cruz/S.F. transplants Koalacaust ring this oh so true, having played with Mischief Brew, Paul Baribeau, and Andrew Jackson Jihad these youngins are not only living the folk-punk dream but cultivating some of the dankest tunes around. This entire record is ab solid with genuine balls out jams that need to be sung along to. Koalacaust have been everywhere with us, including many of our firsts; our first fmly show, thank you come again, inciting of a riot, and our third fmly ride. We’ve shared some intimate moments and joints with our relocated Bay Area-bros and it’s an honor to offer their debut CD available for a free download.

The more I hear about Vacation Dad, the less I want to know. I haven’t even looked at the dude’s MySpace in fear of it breaking my heart. The myth goin’ ’round the web is that Vacation Dad is one sweet pop who was laid off and recorded a heap of some straightup heart-gripping-feet-stomping-fist-pumping-head-grooving-eyes-rolling jams while on his new found perma-holiday, but because that’s really what I semi-aspire to do in my too distant to talk about future this little story is keeping that glimmer of hope alive. Kinda follows with what I love about Memory Cassette, maybe musical dads in general are just the coolest things ever. Vacation Dad, you’re my hero. You and ALASKAS should have a cabin share together. all your walls will burn

Our pals in The Morning Benders video recorded the inspiring and gorgeous recording process of “Excuses”, the opener to their forthcoming Chris Taylor (GrizBear) produced Big Echo. The tune features backup from Christopher Owens of Girls, John Vanderslice, and way more folks who we really shouldn’t recognize right off the bat. You can also catch our dawg4lyfe Timothy Rabbit on bass! I mean, he does play bass in the band…but it’s still really exciting to see him!

Speaking of Timothy Rabbit, he has tossed a lot of his tunes online for us to download freely! It’s Always Snowing…In Iceland is right here – aw, good memories – and 14 Rabbit Songs is right here. Light some candles and get loose.

I’m only a quarter of the way into inflatable mattressreal talk for the first time, but anything with the Happy Family brand gets a ‘way tight’ in my book. I’m just waiting for the day when bmore isn’t the standard Baltimore beat and we can hit up a space consistently dj’d with the sounds of Run DMT, Happy Family, teenage Animal Collective, and so on and so forth…I guess when medical marijuana is legal it’ll make more sense to the general public. More words on this tape later, but download it now for free courtesy of Wig Flip Records. And peep that free kisses dream piece!

snow doubt about it

I’m heading back to New York this week, to the land of stable internet, too convenient Thai food, and a season of winter hibernation. Luckily for the plane ride and the bedroom pining I Am The Dot has recorded a Winter EP with Boneless to bring the spirit when we’ve run out of Holidays. Unfortunely, due to said stable internet, I have to wait until NY before I can download it (but streaming is chill). These dudes are consistently keeping me on my feet, and we’ll have more from I Am The Dot coming soon.

clap your hands and leap

Not even a week into the new year and fresh genre-defying tapes are dropping like it’s hot. Toro Y Moi’s Causers of This came out on iTunes today, but if you’re waiting for the physical version may I recommend some jams of 2010 to hold over that aural libido in the meantime?

Memoryhouse’s debut EP, The Years, came out today for free courtesy of Arcade Sound Ltd, with a cassette and 7″ to follow in the spring. Skydiving for sounds, Memoryhouse is a sedative for the overactive mind and the blanket you wake up smothered in after passing out on the couch. Denise and Evan are the dreamsounds for wanderers lost in the clouds.

blipping

Who’s Blip‘ing this year!? Do to super inconvenient timing I can’t make it, and yes I’m sulking right now, but damn is it gonna be a chipper event! Cue the awful joke sounds…

I don’t want to say anything outlandish, but Blip Fest at the Bell House is the greatest indoor three day event I can remember hitting up. The crowd is sweet, the sounds are sweeter, and 8bitpeoples put so much nurturing into the lineup, volunteers, workers, and total aesthetic that it’s impossible not to be totally impressed. My curiosities with this year’s lineup are the absence of a few names like Anamanaguchi, IAYD, Unicorn Dream Attack, Nordloef, etc but they fooled me…there’s more unofficial Blip afterparties than I can keep track of!

Just wanted to point this one out since we post so much Unicorn Dream Attack, Stefen will be playing Piano’s on December 20 with Sievert, L-Tron, Cryptosystem, e.s.c, The Tin Foil Hat Brigade, and visuals by C-Men. Hit it up (fbook event)! Feel free to post more parties in the comment section if you’re going. And to get pumped for Blip, head over to 8bp and download Nullsleep’s Unconditional Acceleration for free right here (thanks to IMOLFO for the tip).
